Hillary for America Releases ‘College Calculator’

On Monday, Hillary for America released a new “college calculator” that will show past students how Hillary Clinton’s plan will reduce what they owe, and the site also shows future students how they will benefit from proposed plan. Hillary for America released a ‘college calculator’ today for families and students to see how much they would save under her New College Compact, her debt-free college plan to ensure that cost is never a barrier for young people seeking to pursue their dreams of higher education and that debt won’t hold them back.

The calculator, also available in Spanish, will allow users to calculate how Clinton’s plan will provide relief from crushing debt as it allows all borrowers to refinance their student loans, and enroll in income-based repayment plans.

The calculator also will help families planning for college to determine the cost based on their annual household income, where they live, what type of college their student plans on attending, and understand when they can benefit from special programs in Hillary Clinton’s college plans. The special programs include those available for student-parents, veterans or those serving in active military duty, those who have served or are contemplating serving on AmeriCorps, and those students contemplating attending a Historically Black College or University, Hispanic Serving Institution or other Minority Serving Institution.

With too many families struggling with student debt, and tuition increasing by 40% over the last ten years at public college and universities, the situation has careened out of control. Hillary’s plan will help millions of Americans with their debt right now, and will make college debt-free for future generations. Meanwhile, Donald Trump has offered no solutions to make college more affordable, and his idea of higher education is Trump University – a fraudulent business that left hundreds of students in debt and without the skills they were promised they would obtain.

The college calculator helps students and families:

Calculate their total savings under Hillary Clinton’s college affordability plans for the remaining length of time left on their student loans with their remaining loan balance.
Understand how they can take advantage of her student loan refinancing plan in order to reduce their loan payments.
Understand how they can benefit from income-based repayment plans to bring down their monthly loan payments to something more manageable.
Understand the special savings available to those with student debt who choose to work in public service, become entrepreneurs or have served/decide to serve in AmeriCorps and highlights some of the steps that Hillary Clinton will take to protect and strengthen the educational benefits that veterans have earned through their service.
Understand how based on what state they live in, what school they are planning on attending and their household income, the savings and benefits available to them under Hillary Clinton’s college plans.
Understand the tuition savings they will get on a per-state basis and based on their household income if they choose to attend a 4-year in-state public university or a community college.
Identify when students may be eligible to take advantage of Pell grants to use towards college-related costs.

Hillary Clinton Announces Plan to Boost Small Businesses

On Tuesday, Hillary Clinton announced a plan she would introduce as president to boost small businesses. She introduced her plan in an article for LinkedIn followed by a teleconference with members of the press and several small business owners. Clinton warned of Donald Trump’s past business practices with small businesses arguing that a Trump presidency would not be good for small business owners. The comprehensive plan builds on her overall economic plan which would create millions of jobs by investing in infrastructure upgrades and clean energy. Small businesses play into her overall plan as they will provide American workers and products. An outline of the plan is below and the full plan is available on The Briefing.

Make it easier to start a business and become profitable
- Push states to make it faster and cheaper to start a business
- Working with states to standardize licensing requirements
- Making technical assistance and resources available to states
- Provide incubators, mentoring, and training to 50,000 entrepreneurs and small business owners in underserved communities
Make it easier to get financing and find investors
- Streamline regulation and cut red tape for community banks and credit unions
- Harness the potential of online lending platforms
- Reduce the burden of student debt by allowing entrepreneurs to defer student loan payment
- Promote the 100% tax exclusion on capital gains for long-term small business investments
- Expand and streamline the SBA’s Small Business Investment Company program
- Support new innovative ways to assess creditworthiness for small business owners
- Expand access to credit in underserved communities
- Give the SBA administrator the authority to continue providing 7(a) loan guarantees to small businesses
- Expand access to working capital by expanding the SBA’s working capital guarantee programs
Make it cheaper and faster to file taxes and pay for tax relief
- Work to create a new standard deduction for small businesses
- Allow 4 million small businesses with gross receipts under $1 million to take advantage of “checkbook accounting”
- Allow small businesses to immediately expense up to $1 million in new investments
- Quadruple the start-up tax deduction to significantly lower the cost of starting a business
Make it easier to offer health care and other benefits to employees
- Simplify and expand the healthcare tax credit
- Allow more small businesses pool together to offer retirement plans
Make it easier to work with the federal government
- Work to completely revamp the digital experience for small businesses
- Use the leverage of more than $400 billion in federal government contracting to encourage businesses to pay their suppliers in full and on time
- Guarantee a 24-hour response time to small businesses with questions about federal regulations and access to capital programs
- Ensure that Small Business Development Centers are placed in the highest-need communities with staff that speaks the language of local residents
- Work to ensure that federal regulations aren’t unnecessarily holding small businesses and our economy back
- Increase federal contracting opportunities for women-owned, minority-owned, and veteran-owned small businesses
- Defend and strengthen the Export-Import Bank
- Encourage small business exports by expanding SBA funding for export development

House Benghazi Committee Releases Final Report

The House Select Committee on Benghazi concluded its multi-year investigation into the terrorist attack on the United States Diplomatic compound in Benghazi, Libya. The attack resulted in the death of U.S. Ambassador J. Christopher Stevens and U.S. Foreign Service Information Management Officer Sean Smith. After reviewing evidence and conducting countless interviews, the committee released its findings at the end of June.

There has been controversy surrounding the committee since its creation in 2014. Democrats have accused Republicans as using the attacks in Benghazi as a way to harm Hillary Clinton’s presidential aspirations. Its critics point to the endless investigations, many of which concluded before the committee was created in 2014. Because of this, the Republican majority and the Democratic minority of the committee have agreed on little. In fact, they even have separate websites covering the investigation. These divisions were made more apparent when Clinton testified for over 10 hours before the committee in October 2015.

On June 27, the minority members of the committee released their findings in a report led by Representative Elijah Cummings. In the report, the minority members focus on the way the committee has acted and the cost to tax payers for an investigation that ultimately yielded no new findings. They also complained that they were largely left out the process of writing the primary report that was released the next day. The report, which consists of 340 pages, is primarily a criticism of the handling of the investigation by the Republicans on the committee and their limited focus on Clinton.

The Republicans released their final report on June 28, a day after the Democrats. In 869 pages, the committee’s Republicans, led by Representative Trey Gowdy, harshly criticized the State Department, Defense Department, and CIA for failing to fully understand the situation that led to the attack in Benghazi. The report criticizes the delayed action by the Obama administration following the attacks. Overall, the committee failed to find any new evidence that changed the narrative of the attack nor could they prove that Clinton was in any way negligent. Instead, the report largely blames systemic issues for the poor response to the attack.

While the committee is responsible for discovering that Clinton used a private email server as Secretary of State, the findings of the committee largely echo that of an investigations conducted by the State Department in 2012 and the Senate Foreign Relations Committee in 2013. During the Senate hearings in January 2013, Clinton accepted full responsibility for the State Department’s failures leading up to and following the attack. She also spoke about security funding that was cut by Congress arguing that those cuts have made United States diplomatic posts less secure around the world and she urged Congress to increase funding to ensure the safety of diplomats.

Since the release of the report early this week, Clinton has been asked for her thoughts. While she has not had much to say, she did offer a comment late this week saying, “I’ll leave it to others to characterize this report, but I think it’s pretty clear it’s time to move on.”

While many agree that it is time to move on, we want to ensure that the report, and every other report released on the Benghazi investigation are fully available to readers in the interest of full transparency. Hillary Clinton Second in Wisconsin Primary

On Tuesday, Democratic candidate Bernie Sanders defeated Hillary Clinton in the Wisconsin primary. The final results had Sanders over Clinton 56.6% to 43.1%. While the vote may not have been as close as Clinton’s camp would like, the delegate count remained in Clinton’s favor with Sanders only gaining a handful of delegates. The next primary event in Wyoming’s Caucus on Saturday, April 9.

Meanwhile, Clinton was in New York campaigning for their upcoming primary on April 19. Speaking at Medgar Evers College in Brooklyn, Clinton focused on women’s rights and women’s issues. She spoke about topics such as reproductive rights, criminal justice, and economics. Clinton particularly focused on the the minimum wage and how it disproportionality affects women and minority women in particular. Clinton said, “I’m particularly concerned about girls and women, being one myself. But more than that because we still have a long way to go before we can honestly say to our daughters, ‘Yes you can be anything you want to be, including president of the United States.’” A video from the event is below.
