Senator Bernie Sanders campaigned for Hillary Clinton in Iowa and Nebraska on Friday. His first events were in Davenport and Iowa City. During his speech at each event, Sanders stressed the importance of electing Democrats to ensure their progressive agenda become law. He spoke about Clinton’s plans to combat climate change, invest in clean energy, address campaign finance reform, reign in income inequality, and make college more affordable for students. Clinton’s college plan was developed with Sanders and he spoke about it in detail. He urged everyone to vote for Clinton and progressive platform saying, “The importance of this [platform] document is we are not going to let it sit on a shelf. We are going to incorporate those ideas into legislation to transform America. Iowa, thank you for making that possible.” Videos from the event in Iowa City are below.

In Cedar Rapids, Sanders spoke to a crowd of supporters on the campus of the University of Northern Iowa. He spoke about a number of Clinton’s platform points and the importance of electing progressives. He urged everyone to vote next Tuesday and encouraged the students to remain active in politics after the election saying, “But then the day after the election, after Hillary wins, I want you to pledge yourself to work as hard as you can with your friends and your co-workers to make this country what you and I know that we can become. Stand up for economic justice, social justice, racial justice, environmental justice. Let’s go forward and transform America.”

Sanders’ final event of the day was a rally in Omaha, Nebraska. Sanders maintained his progressive message talking about Clinton’s progressive platform and plans to raise the minimum wage and ensure that the wealthy pay their fair share in taxes. Sanders said that electing Donald Trump would be a disaster, but he also said that the election is going to be close. “My own gut feel is it’s going to be a very, very close election,” he said. Sanders urged everyone to get out and vote next Tuesday. A video from the event will be posted when/if available.

Clinton Speaks with Refinery29

Last week, Hillary Rodham Clinton gave an exclusive interview to the site Refinery29, an independent style and fashion website geared toward women. The topic discussed was sexual assault, especially assaults that take place on college campuses. Clinton addressed that topic last week during a speech at University of Northern Iowa. The key to Clinton’s plan is education and prevention. She said, “This starts at an early age, with the culture playing a role in this, the messages that are sent to young men, the kind of visual images seen all too often, the lyrics of music. We know there’s a kind of pressure or expectation about behaviors that are hurtful. And so, we need to do more, starting in high school, I would argue, to begin to try to change those signals; to begin to try to change the culture.” A video from the interview is above and you can read a transcript HERE.

This weekend, Clinton is scheduled to attend a private fundraiser in California. As always, for all the latest, follow our Scheduled Events page and follow Clinton on Twitter, Facebook, and Instagram.

Clinton Addresses Sexual Assault in Return to Iowa

Screen Shot 2015-09-14 at 7.34.45 PMOn Monday, Hillary Rodham Clinton returned to Iowa to speak at two college campuses. The first stop was a Women for Hillary event on the campus of University of Northern Iowa in Cedar Falls where she outlined her plan to combat sexual assault. She focused her attention primarily to the issue of sexual assault on college campuses, but said that it can  occur anywhere including in the workplace, at home, and in communities. She said that often, the victim feels alone because of the bureaucratic processes involved in reporting incidents. This is especially true on college campuses. She said, “I want to send a message to every survivor of sexual assault: Don’t let anyone silence your voice. You have the right to be heard. You have the right to be believed, and we’re with you.” Clinton vowed to approach the issue by:

  1. Making it easier for victims to access help
  2. Forcing campuses and the justice system to treat both the accused and victim fairly
  3. Increase awareness programs on college campuses and high schools

Following her speech in Cedar Rapids, she spoke with the press where she answered questions about her plan. Clinton then went to Decorah, where she spoke at an event on the campus of Luther College. Her message was similar to her speech in Cedar Rapids saying that more needed to be done to prevent sexual assault and victims deserved to be heard.

A video from Clinton’s speech at the University of Northern Iowa is below.

Clinton’s next scheduled event is The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon on Wednesday, then she returns to New Hampshire. For all the latest, follow our Scheduled Events page and follow Clinton on Twitter, Facebook, and Instagram.
