DNC Wrap-Up: Day 2

On Tuesday evening, the second night of the Democratic National Convention in Philadelphia made history by officially nominating Hillary Clinton as the Democratic Party’s candidate for president. Clinton becomes the first female candidate to receive the nomination of a major political party. Clinton made a brief appearance via satellite from New York and thanked everyone for their support. She will officially accept the party’s nomination during her speech on Thursday.

In additional to the historic moment, the evening also featured another marquee night of speeches. Those taking the stage included Former Senator Tom Harkin, Virginia Governor Terry McAuliffe, Senator Chuck Schumer, the principal and students from Eagle Academy, Former Attorney General Eric Holder, Senator Barbara Boxer, Representative Joseph Crowley, Mothers of the Moment, former Governor of Vermont Howard Dean, and actress Meryl Streep. The most powerful speech of the evening was delivered by President Bill Clinton. He focused on he and Hillary’s relationship and personal life. He called Hillary “the best darn change-maker” that he has ever seen and said that she will fight for everyone and does not back down from a fight. The DNC is also featuring a series of videos highlighting Clinton’s career and personal life. Included in those videos Tuesday was one covering her time as Secretary of State and one about how she worked with the Eagle Academy. A third video was about the career of Bill Clinton. Hillary Clinton Campaigns in New York, Maryland

Today, Hillary Clinton attended campaign events in three states. She began by attending Sunday morning services at the Greater Allen AME Cathedral in Jamaica, Queens. The church is led by former Congressman Rev. Floyd Flake. During her remarks to the congregation, Clinton spoke about empowering people by expanding economic opportunity. She also spoke about her plans to reduce gun violence by introducing mandatory background checks and taking on criminal justice reform.

In Baltimore, Maryland, Clinton spoke to an enthusiastic crowd after being introduced and endorsed by Congressman Elijah E. Cummings. She spoke about the accomplishments of the state of Maryland to expand paid sick leave saying that it something she would like to expand to a national level. Clinton also acknowledged the issue facing the city of Baltimore and pledged to be supportive saying, “I particularly want to pay attention to our cities, like Baltimore. I will focus particularly on communities, neighborhoods, regions that have been passed by.” Videos of today’s events will be posted when/if available.

Clinton wrapped up the day in McLean, Virginia where she attended a fundraiser. The event was held at the home of Virginia Governor Terry McAuliffe and his wife, Dorothy.

Clinton Fundraises in Connecticut and Virginia

Today, Hillary Clinton attended two fundraisers for her campaign. The first was in Litchfield County, Connecticut where she attended a conversational fundraisers with a number of guests. Some of the guests included Governor Dan Malloy, Lieutenant Governor Nancy Wyman, Senator Richard Blumenthal, Senator Chris Murphy, and Representative Elizabeth Esty. In Virginia, Clinton attended an event hosted by John and Renée Grisham. The event took place at their home in North Garden, and featured Governor Terry McAuliffe.

This weekend, Hillary and Bill Clinton head to the west coast where they will attend a series of public events and fundraisers leading up to Tuesday’s primaries in Arizona, Idaho, and Utah. Yesterday, two major stars joined the Hillary for America ranks in support of Hillary Clinton on the campaign trail. Actress Lena Dunham and US Women’s Soccer star Abby Wambach spent Friday traveling around New Hampshire talking to voters and fans about Clinton and why they support her as our next president. They both spoke about issues that are important to them including women’s rights and LGBT issues. Wambach said, “I want to see Hillary Clinton in the office. She has amazing, amazing stamina. She’s smart and she has been basically doing it by herself as a woman alone among all other men for how many years. It’s time people. It’s time for women to be seen as real equals.”

Dunham and Wambach appeared together at an event in Portsmouth before they attended individual events in Manchester, Dover, Concord, Salem, Lebanon, and Keene. Wambach even took part in a phone bank call out campaign in Concord. Dunham concluded the day by attending an evening event in Chicago.

Today, Dunham was in Des Moines and Iowa City holding conversation events. Dunham and Wambach weren’t the only supporters on trail for Hillary this week. Former President Bill Clinton hosted a number of organizing events in New Hampshire and Iowa. He also attended a number of fundraisers. Today and tomorrow in Iowa, Virginia Governor Terry McAuliffe will meet with volunteers and supporters as they prepare to go out and knock on doors or make phone calls in support of Hillary.

Clinton Returns to Campaign Trail Following Testimony

Following her 10+ hours of testimony before Congress yesterday, Hillary Rodham Clinton returned to the campaign trail today. She began by attending the Democratic National Committee’s Women’s Leadership Forum in Washington, D.C. She addressed a number of topics and took a shot at her Democratic challenger Bernie Sanders on gun control. He has made comments about people “shouting” about gun control, and that shouting doesn’t get anything done. Clinton addressed his comments today by saying, “I am not shouting. It is just when women talk, some people think we are shouting.” Clinton was the final speaker this morning and spoke about about twenty minutes. A video of the speech is below.

Clinton then went to Virginia where she appeared with Governor Terry McAuliffe at a rally in Alexandria. McAuliffe introduced Clinton saying that she is a poised leader and that she will fight for Virginians and Americans. Clinton then took the stage and spoke about her record as a progressive, but a progressive who is open to ideas and willing to work with others. She then encouraged Virginia voters to turn out in state-wide election on November 3. The grass roots event was attended by a large crowd outside of Alexandria City Hall. She promised to fight for everyone as President saying, “Your fights are my fights and I won’t quit until all Americans have a chance to get ahead and stay ahead.” A video of the speech is below.

Clinton gives Speech at Jefferson-Jackson Event

Hillary Rodham Clinton was a featured speaker at the Jefferson-Jackson Event held by the Virginia Democratic Party at the Patriot Center on the campus of George Mason University. After being introduced by Virginia Governor Terry McAuliffe, Clinton praised the recent Supreme Court decision which upheld the Affordable Care Act. The court also ruled in favor of marriage equality, which is a major victory for the LGBT community. Clinton celebrated the decisions and also criticized Republicans for being “the party of the past, not the future.” Republicans have been vocal in their criticism of both decisions.

Endorsing Terry McAuliffe for Virginia Governor

Hillary Clinton returned to the political scene when she endorsed Democrat Terry McAuliffe for Governor of Virginia. It was the first time Clinton officially supported a candidate in an election. In the speech she discusses McAuliffe’s qualifications and what he will do for the Commonwealth of Virginia.
