Hillary Clinton on Space and STEM

While a lot has been published about Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump’s platform plans for foreign and domestic policies, most outlets have ignored thier stance on science, STEM, and space exploration. Clinton has outlined proposals to combat climate change and increase research for certain diseases, but a number of prominent science and space publications have asked the candidates for their thoughts on science and space exploration. If you consider STEM education, science, and space exploration to be important factors in your decision for whom to vote, which you should, check out the publications below for a better understanding of the positions of Clinton and Trump.

• The Planetary Society – The Planetary Society is a non-profit group that specializes in space policy. They help fund missions and inform members of Congress on issues related to space. The group has assembled the key positions on space offered by Clinton and Trump.
• Planetary Radio – Part of The Planetary Society, Planetary Radio’s most recent episode of its Space Policy Edition outlines the stances of Clinton and Trump. Listen to the episode on iTunes or click HERE to download the MP3.
• Science News – As the official magazine for the Society for Science & the Public, the editorial board released a breakdown of where the candidates stand on specific science policies including space exploration, genetic research, climate change, health, vaccines, gun violence, and STEM education. • Scientific American – As one of the most popular science magazines in the country, Scientific American is a great resource for the latest in the realm of scientific research. Readers of the magazines voted on the 20 top questions they wanted to ask each presidential candidate, and all four candidates responded. A number of topics are covered including innovation, research, climate change, the internet and technology, education, nuclear power, and access to clean water. • ReCode – The tech site run by tech journalists Walt Mossberg and Kara Swisher, ReCode is an advocate for STEM education. In an article published on November 5, Luther Lowe outlined Clinton’s dedication to STEM and education from her time as First Lady of Arkansas, First Lady of the United States, Senator from New York, and Secretary of State. Statement from HFA on Report that Trump Rented to Iranian Bank Linked to Terrorism

On Monday, The International Consortium of Investigative Journalists released a report that revealed the Trump Organization rented office space to an Iranian bank linked to terrorism. Hillary for America senior policy advisor Jake Sullivan released the following statement in response:

“Today’s report that Trump’s organization did business with a sanctioned Iranian bank—one that has played a role in supporting Iran’s nuclear program and supported groups like Hezbollah and Hamas—shows yet again that Trump puts his own business interests ahead of the national interest. This report exposes Trump’s hypocrisy on Iran. As with Cuba, he talks a big game but when it comes to making a buck, he’ll deal with anyone. The conflicts of interest presented by Trump’s business and his own desire to boost his bottom line above all else demonstrate clearly why voters should know more about Trump’s business deals and what they mean for how he’ll govern.”

Bill Clinton Campaigns for Hillary in Kentucky

While voters headed to the polls in Indiana, Bill Clinton campaigned for Hillary Clinton in Kentucky, a state that holds its primary on May 17. Clinton began by touring the Morehead State’s Space Science Center and giving a speech to supporters. He spoke about the economy, the future of education, and the continued expansion of health care coverage. He praised the university for its work in the science and space sector saying, “The No. 1 export industry in the Commonwealth of Kentucky is not bourbon, it’s not coal, or is it cars. The No. 1 export industry in the Commonwealth of Kentucky, an $8 billion industry, is the aeronautics and aerospace industry.”

Clinton then traveled to Lexington where he spoke to a group of supporters on the campus of the University of Kentucky. During his speech, Clinton spoke about health care and how Kentucky was one of the best states in the country with regard to the Affordable Care Act. The exchanges were well maintained and Medicaid coverage was helping those who were underinsured. But he said that “you elected a Republican governor” who “wrecked” it. He was referring to Governor Matt Bevin who has dismantled the Affordable Care Act framework in the state. Clinton also spoke about an number of Hillary’s platform points including the economy and bringing down the cost of higher education.

The final event of the day was in Louisville where he gave a stump speech to supporters at the Kentucky Center for African American Heritage. Clinton spoke about Hillary’s plans for the future and her long career of fighting for the middle class. While in Louisville, he also made a number of unscheduled stops downtown where he wondered into shops and visited with the owners and clients. Two fundraisers were held on behalf of Hillary for America. The first, was in New Orleans, Louisiana at the home of Jason Waguespack. Attending the event was former Congressman Barney Frank. The second event was a conversation about health care with Senior Policy Advisor Ann O’Leary. The event was hosted by Michael Bronfein in Baltimore, Maryland.
