Hillary Clinton Presents Manufacturing Plan in Syracuse

On Friday, Hillary Clinton held two public events in Syracuse, New York. The first was a round table discussion during which she unveiled her plans to boost manufacturing. The plan calls for an investment of $10 billion and is called “Make it in America.” The basic components of the plan include:

  • The establishment of “Make it in America Partnerships” that make America the first choice for manufacturing production by harnessing regional strengths.
  • Prevent foreign countries like China from abusing global trade rules, and reject trade agreements that do not meet high standards.
  • Revitalize the hardest-hit manufacturing communities.
  • Crack down on companies shipping jobs and earnings overseas – and create incentives for companies to bring back jobs to the U.S.
  • Invest in America’s manufacturing workforce to ensure that they will always be the best in the world.

Clinton then held a public rally in Syracuse’s Regional Market where she covered a number of topics including her pledge to fight for equal pay for women, making higher education more affordable, and growing the economy of New York and and the country. She also touched on the topic she covered earlier in the day at the small business round table saying, “Upstate New York has a storied history of manufacturing. We now have a chance to recapture that.” While in Syracuse, Clinton also made stop at Varsity Pizza where she posed for pictures and signed basketballs. Clinton also attended two fundraisers today. The first was held before the rally in Syracuse where donors could meet Clinton. She then traveled to New Jersey for a fundraiser in Tenafly.

Hillary Clinton Campaigns in Tennessee and Arkansas

On Sunday, Hillary Clinton attended events in two of Super Tuesday’s primary states: Tennessee and Arkansas. She began by attending church service at Greater Imani Cathedral of Faith in Memphis. She told the congregation that she believed America is still great, but work needs to be done to “make it whole again.” Clinton then attended services at the Mississippi Boulevard Christian Church where she expressed her confidence in the future saying, “I am very confident, not just hopeful, I am confident that if we start working together again, if we remembered we are the United States of America, if we reject the demagoguery, the prejudice, the paranoia, the mean spiritedness we hear in our public political discourse … America’s best days can still be ahead of us.”

In Nashville, Clinton gave a platform focused stump speech before the state’s primary on Tuesday. She focused on the differences between her and her Democratic rival, Bernie Sanders, although she never mentioned him by name. She spoke about her plans to make higher education more affordable, improve heath care (and not scrap the current system), and reform the criminal justice system. She also called for a simpler way for small businesses to get government assistance as well an increase in the minimum wage. Clinton wrapped up the day at a Get Out the Vote event in Pine Bluff, Arkansas. Speaking at the University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff, Clinton spoke about her plans to assist students pay for college saying, “we’ve got to get college affordable again.” She criticized Sanders’ free education for all plan saying that a tiered plan made more sense. She reasoned, “I don’t think you should have to pay to send Donald Trump’s kids to school.” Clinton also spoke about a number of other issues including health care and the economy. Clinton Speaks About Voting Right in Alabama

She addressed the issues plaguing the state of Alabama including the fact that the state opted not to expand Medicaid under the Affordable Care Act. She focused on Gov. Robert Bentley and the state legislature making it more difficult to vote in the state saying, “Here in Alabama, without the right kind of ID, it’s nearly impossible to vote. I followed when Gov. Bentley and his administration closed 31 driver’s license offices across the state. They include every county where African Americans make up 75 percent of the voters. The closings will make getting license and personal identification cards much harder for many African Americans, particularly the elderly, erecting a big barrier to voting.”

Clinton is calling for the restoration of the Voting Rights Act that was gutted by the Supreme Court. Clinton also spoke about making college more affordable for those who want to go and attend a state school. She spoke about other aspects of her platform including investing in renewable energy, raising the minimum wage, lowering the cost of prescription drugs, helping small businesses, and introducing measures to curb gun violence. Before attending the Alabama Democrat Conference, Clinton attended a private fundraiser hosted by Representative Terri Sewell in Birmingham. As with all private events, it was closed to the press.

Clinton Attends Fundraisers in Detroit and Chicago

635730905307178192-2015-0721-dm-hilary00666On Tuesday, Hillary Rodham Clinton stopped in Detroit at a local sweet potato shop. Clinton visited Sweet Potato Sensations for a slice of sweet potato pie and ice cream. She visited with the owners of the bakery and its patrons. Clinton told the patrons and reporters, ” I’ve said in this campaign that I want to be the small business president. And I’m making a real point of sort of identifying and visiting small businesses that are successful, sometimes against the odds, but really provide either a service or product that people in their communities are buying up and giving a good base for further growth.”

After leaving Detroit, Clinton headed to a private fundraiser in Grosse Pointe, Michigan at the home of Democratic Party strategist Jill Alper and her husband, David Katz. Clinton also attended a private fundraiser this evening in Chicago, Illinois. The fundraiser was hosted by securities trader Rajiv Fernando.

Clinton Focuses on Women’s Issues in South Carolina

Hillary Rodham Clinton visited South Carolina for the first time since announcing her presidential campaign. In Columbia, Clinton began by meeting with six minority women business owners at Kiki’s Chicken and Waffles. She held a roundtable where the business owners shared their ideas and concerns with Clinton.

Clinton then delivered the keynote address at the South Carolina Democratic Women’s Council’s Day in Blue conference. She spoke about a woman’s right to equal pay saying that the issue was not only a women’s issue, but a family issue. She said, “When any parent is short-changed, the entire family is short-changed, and if families are short-changed, Americans are short-changed.” She advocated for strengthening the middle class and said that equal pay for women was a step in the right direction. Clinton proposed a paycheck fairness act that would provide the legal framework for business to disclose salaries for positions to ensure women are not being short-changed. Clinton Returns to New Hampshire

Hillary Rodham Clinton returned to New Hampshire on Friday. In her second trip to the state since announcing her presidential campaign, she, again, focused on visiting with small business owners. Stopping in Exeter and Derry she visited with small business owners and toured a brewery, book store, and ice cream shop. Clinton held a roundtable with small business owners at the Smuttynose Brewery. She concluded her trip by holding a private visit with supporters in Amherst.

Clinton’s visit to New Hampshire was overshadowed by the State Department’s release of 900 pages of Clinton’s emails related to the attack on the US Embassy in Benghazi, Libya. She took a few questions from reporters and was asked about the emails’ release. Clinton responded by saying, ““First of all, I’m glad that the emails are starting to come out. This is something that I’ve asked to be done for a long time, and those releases are beginning. I want people to be able to see all of them, and it is a fact that we have released all of them that have any government relationship whatsoever. In fact, the State Department had the vast majority of those, anyway, because they were sent to ‘dot-gov’ accounts.” You can see the emails that were released by clicking here.

Clinton Goes to Iowa – Day 2

635647067684854628-uscpcent02-6k31d12lf6s1fwnle79o-originalOn her second day in Iowa, Hillary Rodham Clinton continued to meet with potential voters and took part in a roundtable with small business owners from across central Iowa. The event, which took place at Capital City Fruit Company in Norwalk, focused on America’s reliance on small businesses, and the difficulty many small business owners face to start their business and to keep their doors open. Clinton said, “We need to be, we have to be, No. 1 again. Slowly over time it’s become more difficult — more expensive, more red tape, unnecessary regulations that have really put a damper.”

During the roundtable, one of the business owners referred to increasing costs in health care and Clinton spoke about health care and the Affordable Care Act. She acknowledged that was a problem, and said that she was interested in updating aspects of the law. This isn’t new for Clinton, however. In several speeches before announcing her candidacy, Clinton hinted that was open to changes to the ACA.

Other business owners brought up the difficulty of hiring immigrants and having to turn down able works because of the their immigrant status. Because immigration reform is currently stalled in Congress, businesses are stuck in the middle. Clinton blamed the lack of comprehensive immigration reform on political ideologies. She went on to say, “We are really missing out on economic opportunities because we haven’t been able to agree on comprehensive immigration reform.”

The event was a listening session where she encouraged the small business owners to talk openly. Clinton shied away from answering questions about her platform and plan for small businesses saying that she was still in the building phase and wanted to hear what people have to say before her platform is complete.

Today wrapped up Clinton’s visit to Iowa, where she also visited Des Moines and Marshalltown, but she promised that she would be back soon. She is expected to head to New Hampshire next where she will likely hold similar listening sessions with different groups of voters.
