The Choice is Clear: Trump is Unfit to be President and Commander-In-Chief

Americans deserve a president who’s ready on Day One to keep us safe. As a former Secretary of State and senator, Hillary Clinton brings vast experience to the Oval Office, having dealt with the key issues facing Americans around the world for decades. Traveling nearly a million miles as America’s top diplomat, Hillary has handled issues ranging from nuclear proliferation to military readiness, from women’s rights  to climate change, and is ready to lead from day one.

Donald Trump, on the other hand, has proven himself again and again to be temperamentally unfit and totally unqualified to be President and Commander-in-Chief.

Beyond his lack of understanding of foreign policy and unwillingness to learn, Donald Trump is a loose cannon with dangerous views on major global issues. Trump would encourage the spread of nuclear weapons around the world, has insulted our allies and praised several authoritarian dictators.  He even encouraged a foreign government to hack Americans, and since then has refused to acknowledge the U.S. Intelligence community’s conclusion that the Russian government has done just that.

Americans deserve a president who understands the challenging world in which we live, not one who is too erratic and uninformed to have control of nuclear weapons.

Throughout his career, and throughout this campaign, on subject after subject, Trump has proven he is unfit to be commander-in-chief. As we begin the final week of the presidential campaign, here is a look back at Trump’s dangerous record on matters of defense and foreign policy:

NUCLEAR WEAPONS

On nuclear weapons, Donald Trump has displayed a reckless disregard for fact and fails to understand the dangers of nuclear proliferation. Simply put, he doesn’t have the temperament to be trusted with the nuclear codes.

• Trump has said he “loves war.”
• Trump has embraced a reckless “shoot first” foreign policy.
• Trump reportedly wondered why we can’t use nuclear weapons, if we have them.
• Trump said he wanted to be “unpredictable” with nuclear weapons.
• Trump exhibited ignorance on whether he would adopt a “no first use” doctrine.
• Trump would allow countries like Japan, South Korea and Saudi Arabia to acquire nuclear weapons.
• Trump appeared to have no idea what the nuclear triad
• On the prospect of nuclear war in Asia, Trump said, “good luck, enjoy yourself folks.”
• Trump’s rhetoric pushed dozens former nuclear launch officers to sign a letter saying Trump “should not have his finger on the button.”

U.S. MILITARY AND VETERANS

Trump has repeatedly insulted our military, our veterans and their families. He has been disrespecting our veterans for decades, continually proving he’s unqualified and temperamentally unfit to be commander-in-chief.

• Trump calls our military “a disaster.”
• Trump said “our military can’t beat ISIS.”
• Trump says he watches “the shows” for military advice.
• Trump has said he would consult himself on foreign policy because he has “a very good brain.”
• Trump said, “I know more about ISIS than the generals do. Believe me.”
• Trump said the generals have been “reduced to rubble.”
• Trump said John McCain was “not a war hero” because he was captured.
• Trump suggested veterans experiencing PTSD aren’t “strong.”
• Trump repeatedly criticized a Gold Star family.
• Trump’s businesses have been accused of firing employees for their military service.
• Trump lied over and over again about donating to veterans charities.
• Trump scammed veterans through his sham Trump University.
• Trump attempted to kick disabled veterans off of Fifth Avenue over two decades, calling the situation “deplorable.”

U.S. INTELLIGENCE

Trump has disparaged the U.S. intelligence community – not only rejecting their conclusions, but questioning their motives.

• When asked whether he trusts intelligence, Trump said “not so much.”
• Trump invited a foreign government to commit cyber espionage in the U.S.
• Trump maintains that we don’t know if Russia is behind recent hacks, despite being personally briefed by Republican Representative Michael McCaul, Chairman of the House Committee on Homeland Security.
• Trump called the U.S. intelligence community’s conclusion that Russia was behind that hack was “public relations, frankly” and repeatedly denied their conclusion.
• Trump has been accused by a former acting CIA director of being “an unwitting agent of Putin.”

AMERICA’S ALLIES

For decades, America has held strong alliances across the world – including those with NATO countries. NATO has stood with the United States, for example, invoking Article 5 after 9/11 and collaborating to fight the war on terror today. But on the campaign trail, Donald Trump has outlined plans to cut off America’s allies.

• Trump said he would be fine if NATO broke up.
• Trump accused NATO countries of ripping off the United States, saying “either they have to pay up… or they have to get out. And if it breaks up NATO, it breaks up NATO.”
• Trump said NATO “may be obsolete” and “doesn’t really help us.”
• Trump said he might not defend NATO allies against Russian aggression.
• Trump has extended his threats past NATO to countries like Japan and South Korea.

FOREIGN DICTATORS

Donald Trump seems to have an admiration for dictators from across the world. From Vladimir Putin to Saddam Hussein and beyond, Trump has repeatedly complimented foreign leaders known for their records of oppression and abuse..

• Trump said North Korea’s Kim Jong-Un deserves “credit” for taking out his rivals and has “got to be pretty smart.”
• Trump gave Saddam Hussein unduecredit, saying “he did one thing well, he killed terrorists.”
• Trump believes that, during the Tiananmen Square massacre, the Chinese government showed “strength.”
• Trump thinks Vladimir Putin is a better leader than President Obama, “saying in terms of leadership, he’s getting an A and our president is not doing so well.” (But of course, his praise for Putin doesn’t stop there.)

FOREIGN BUSINESS ENTANGLEMENTS

Trump’s extensive foreign dealings would present significant conflicts of interest and endanger our national security. Trump refuses to disclose the full extent of his foreign business entanglements – but without knowing the details of them, how will Americans know whose interests Trump is putting first? What we do know is concerning.

• Trump has extensive global financial dealings.
• Trump admitted that if his business interests were threatened by another country’s government, he would retaliate with the power of the US government.
• Trump has a record of business dealings with foreign governments – including Iran and China that we don’t know the extent of.
• Trump has also had numerous foreign business partners we don’t know much about – including one that is allegedly linked to an international money laundering network.
• Trump is in debt to foreign institutions for hundreds of millions of dollars.
• Trump’s foreign entanglements would pose unprecedented challenges for U.S. foreign policy and national security.

ISIS

Despite Trump’s claims that he has a “secret” plan to defeat ISIS, he has no real plan at all. And his rhetoric is dangerously playing into terrorists’ hands.

• Trump would “ask [his] generals” – the very same generals he believes he knows more than – for a plan to defeat ISIS, since he doesn’t currently have any plan at all.
• Trump would continue to promote Russia’s brutal bombing campaign in Syria that is targeting civilians instead of ISIS.
• Trump has suggested he would allow Syria to become a “free zone for ISIS.”
• Trump would ban Muslims from entering the U.S., a policy that feeds radical jihadist propaganda.
• Trump would engage in torture in the fight against ISIS and kill the families of terrorists.

IRAN

Donald Trump’s approach to Iran is devoid of any substance. He has prefered to denigrate American leaders and spew lies when it comes to Iran — though he was willing to deal with Iran when it made him money.

• Trump has repeatedly lied about the Iran deal.
• Trump has also repeatedly lied about Iran’s release of Americans.
• Trump has peddled falsehoods about Iran’s ability to pursue a nuclear weapon.
• Trump has been exposed as a lessor to Iranian bank linked to terrorism.

NORTH KOREA

Trump doesn’t understand the threat North Korea poses. On the campaign trail, Trump has taken positions that would endanger the security of the  United States and our allies and embolden North Korea.

• Trump would meet with Kim Jong-Un, despite his continued violations of  international obligations to abandon his nuclear and missile programs.
• Trump would consider cutting off defense support to Japan and South Korea.
• Trump would open to door to nuclear proliferation in the region. When asked whether it’s “fine” for Japan and South Korea to get nuclear weapons, Trump said, “Can I be honest with you? It’s going to happen anyway.”
• Trump joked about the prospect of nuclear war between Japan and North Korea, saying “good luck, enjoy yourself folks.”

RUSSIA

While Clinton has stood up to Russia, Trump panders to Putin. He has voiced support for policies and positions that align exactly with the Kremlin’s interests.

• Trump backed Brexit and celebrated the result of the vote.
• Trump casually predicts the dissolution of the EU.
• Trump calls NATO obsolete, says he wouldn’t mind leaving it and threatens to shirk our responsibility to defend our NATO allies unless they pay up.
• Trump criticized the U.S. for resisting Putin’s invasion of Ukraine.
• Ahead of the GOP convention, Trump’s campaign bucked fellow Republicans by maneuvering to ensure the party platform no longer calls for arming the Ukrainians, and then lied about it.
• Trump has floated permanently ceding Crimea to Russia as well as lifting sanctions, after he seemingly had no idea Russia invaded Crimea two years ago.
• Trump has even encouraged Russian espionage to interfere in our election on his behalf, and denied the Kremlin’s evident involvement in hacks on U.S. political entities, a strategy Putin has deployed across Europe to try to install candidates reminiscent of Trump.
• Trump announced he would meet with Putin prior to the start of his administration, if elected president.

SYRIA

To date, Donald Trump has not laid out any real plans with respect to Syria or offered any indication that he takes the conflict and humanitarian disaster seriously.

• Trump suggested Syria should be a “free zone for ISIS.”
• Trump raised the possibility of sending 20,000 – 30,000 U.S. ground troops to Syria and Iraq.
• Trump praised and encouraged Russia’s brutal bombing campaign in Syria, despite the climbing total civilian casualties and attacks on U.S.-backed forces.

Trump peddled lies about Syrian refugees.

Clinton Has Notched Numerous Endorsements from State Editorial Boards

Since Friday, editorial boards across the country have continued to endorse Hillary Clinton to be our next president, calling her “the only one qualified” for the job and deeming the contrast between she and Donald Trump “stark.” These endorsements continue the unprecedented, near-universal nature of this year’s editorial board endorsements of Clinton. Even newspapers that have historically backed Republicans have either refused to support Trump or have offered their endorsement to Clinton.

This weekend’s endorsements include one from The State in South Carolina, which had not endorsed a Democrat in 40 years.

Detroit Free Press Endorsement: Hillary Clinton is a prepared, mature choice

The vote will mark the convergence of two historic opportunities for Michigan voters, and America. The first is the chance to shatter a bigoted gender barrier that dates to the nation’s founding by electing a woman — a woman who happens to be one of the best-prepared candidates to seek the presidency in the last century. The second is the necessity to repudiate, once and for all, the unflattering caricature of America conjured by Clinton’s demagogic Republican rival, Trump. The Daily Iowan: Endorsement: Hillary Clinton

But she possesses qualities other candidates simply do not: experience, a proven track record, the correct disposition for the Oval Office, and the policies to back it all up. The State: Endorsement: Why conservatives have no option but to support Clinton

Her resume suggests Mrs. Clinton is as prepared as any of this year’s candidates to be an effective president. She played a major role in formulating policy during her husband’s administration, especially in the areas of health care and children. As a U.S. senator from New York, she served on the Armed Services Committee, earning praise from Republican John McCain. She also became secretary of state. … This is the first time our editorial board has endorsed a Democratic presidential nominee since Jimmy Carter in 1976. Through the years, we evaluated nominees based on our support for reducing the national debt, strengthening national security and other conservative values. Vice President Biden Campaigns for Hillary in Nevada

Vice President Joe Biden campaigned on behalf of Hillary Clinton and the Nevada Democratic Party today. His first event was a speech at the Southwest Regional Council of Carpenters in Las Vegas. During his speech, Biden spoke about the importance of electing a president and Senator who are pro-union and labor. He said that Donald Trump is anti-union adding, “If (Democrats) don’t win the Senate and Hillary doesn’t win the presidency, you’ll be out of business.” Biden said that it is important that Nevadans vote for Clinton and U.S. Senate candidate Catherine Cortez Masto to ensure that the progress of the last eight years continues.

In Reno, Biden campaigned with Cortez Masto and encouraged everyone to vote for her and Clinton. He spoke about Clinton’s broad platform plans including her plans to create jobs, invest in infrastructure, and make college more affordable. He warned that if Democrats do not take back the Senate, it will be harder for Clinton to pass these initiatives aimed at helping middle class Americans. Biden also attacked Trump for being “crude” and called him ” the least-qualified nominee from any political party in the history of the United States of America.” A video from the Reno event will be added when/if available.

President Obama Campaigns for Hillary in Orlando

On Friday, President Barack Obama campaigned for Hillary Clinton in Orlando, Florida. Speaking to a crowd of supporters on the campus of the University of Central Florida, Obama spoke about Hillary Clinton a number of her platform points including her plans to create jobs, make college more affordable, and continue working to ensure that Americans have health insurance. He said that while he has make a lot of progress in the last eight year, a lot of work still needs to be done and Clinton is the right person for the job. “All the progress we’ve made goes out the window if we don’t win this election,” Obama said. He urged voters to not only vote for Clinton on election day, but to also support down ballot Democrats such as U.S. Senate candidate Patrick Murphy. A video of the President’s speech is below.

Tim Kaine Encourages Early Voting in Ohio

Tim Kaine returned to the campaign trail in Ohio today after attending last night’s World Series baseball game played between the Cleveland Indians and Chicago Cubs. He began the day at a rally held at Lorain High School outside of Cleveland. Campaigning with Senator Al Franken, Kaine spoke about the importance of ensuring Democrats win the Senate, and he encouraged voters to not only support Hillary Clinton but Senate candidate Ted Strickland too. Kaine also spoke about Hillary’s platform points and her plan to bring jobs to Ohio, the dangers of electing Donald Trump, and the importance of voting and the importance of Ohio to the campaign saying, “If we win Ohio the race is over. Hillary Clinton will be president.”

Kaine then went to a rally outside Columbus in Gambier. He spoke about a number of Hillary’s policy proposals including her plan to make college more affordable, create jobs, and raise the minimum wage. Kaine attacked Trump for his refusal to not only accept the results of the election unless he wins, but also for refusing to take responsibility for his own actions. “He’s losing and he will not be able to accept responsibility … He’s going to try to blame it on something else — the media is against me, they rigged the election … If we can win big, he can whine all he wants,” he said. Hillary Clinton Returns to Florida to Encourage Early Voting

Hillary Clinton spent her birthday campaigning in Florida. Her first event was on the campus of Palm Beach State College in Lake Worth. During her speech, Clinton spoke about a number of plans including her proposals to grow the economy, create jobs, and make college more affordable. She also went after Republican Donald Trump and his rhetoric during the campaign cycle and for saying he will not accept the results of the election unless he wins. Clinton called this statement “horrifying” and called it an attack on American democracy. She then spoke about the importance of the election not only for the presidential race, but the down ballot races as well. She encouraged voters to send candidate Patrick Murphy to the U.S. Senate and kick out Senator Marco Rubio. Clinton then asked everyone to vote on November 8th or to take advantage of early voting adding, “Ten million people have already voted, and two million of them right here in Florida. That means Florida has already cast 20 percent of the votes that are in the ballot box. Don’t let anyone tell you they don’t have time to vote.” Watch a video of Clinton’s speech below.

Clinton then traveled to Tampa where she urged voters not to become complacent given current polling numbers. “With 13 days left in this election, we cannot stop for a minute. No complacency. Nobody flagging. We’ve got to get everybody out to vote,” she told supporters. Clinton spoke about a number of her platform points including her plans to raise the minimum wage, ensure equal pay for women, and guarantee paid time off for families. Clinton criticized Trump for his campaign rhetoric saying that she thinks that America’s diversity is one of it’s strongest assets. She said, “I am proud to have support from Republicans and independents here across Florida and across America who agree with me that we should reject hate and division. We have seen Donald Trump insult nearly every person in America, and I just find that so intolerable because — look at this diverse crowd, look at Tampa. It’s a cosmopolitan city.” She concluded by urging everyone to vote. A video from the event is below.

Tim Kaine Rallies Supporters in Pennsylvania

Tim Kaine held two campaign events today in Pennsylvania where he encouraged voters to support Hillary Clinton for president and Katie McGinty for U.S. Senate. Speaking at events in Newtown and Allentown, Kaine focused on the issues and the dangers of electing Donald Trump. He said that the vision of America expressed by himself and Clinton are certainly more optimistic than Trump’s and he stressed the importance of the electing adding, “We can’t afford to get this wrong.” At both events, Kaine spoke about the importance of Pennsylvania in the electing saying, “Pennsylvania is key. Senator Elizabeth Warren Encourages Voting in Pittsburgh

Senator Elizabeth Warren campaigned on behalf of Hillary Clinton in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania today. Warren spoke about Clinton’s plans to help the middle class by raising the minimum wage, creating new jobs, and boosting the economy by investing in the country’s infrastructure. Warren also asked voters to help Democrats win back the Senate by voting for Senate hopeful Katie McGinty. Warren said that McGinty is a fighter that will ensure that the progress proposed by a Clinton administration will get carried out. Hillary Clinton Talks about Early Voting in Florida

Hillary Clinton spoke about the importance of early voting today at a rally in Coconut Creek, Florida. During her speech, Clinton spoke about her typical platform points including her plans to improve health care, create jobs, and build the middle class, but she had an important message for voters. She urged them to get complacent in the light of recent polls, saying that voting is still two weeks away. Clinton said that she needs every voter to support her and down ballot Democrats such as U.S. Senate hopeful Patrick Murphy, who introduced Clinton at the event. Clinton urged voters to take advantage of early voting or head to the ballot box on November 8th because winning Florida is very important to her and her campaign. Senator Warren, Anne Holton Campaign for Hillary

On Tuesday, Senator Elizabeth Warren campaigned in Raleigh, North Carolina on behalf of Hillary Clinton and U.S. Senate candidate Deborah Ross. Warren spoke about Clinton’s presidential platform and the importance of electing Democrats down ballot such as Ross to ensure that Clinton’s plans to help everyday Americans are carried out. During her speech, Warren also attacked Donald Trump for his rhetoric and comments about women. She concluded by asking everyone to get out and vote for Clinton and Ross so we can continue to make progress in America. Watch a video of Warren’s speech below.

In Las Vegas, Nevada, Anne Holton spoke with volunteers at a phone bank event before heading to Henderson for an education roundtable. The roundtable discussion was held at Nevada State College and included a discussion about both early childhood education and higher education. Holton spoke about Clinton’s plans to expand preschool and head start. She also discussed Clinton’s proposal to make college more affordable for those repaying student loans and for future students. Meanwhile, two fundraisers were held on behalf of Hillary for America. The first was in New York City and was billed as “Hill’s Kitchen: A Tasting Event” with Tim Kaine. In Denver, Colorado, Chris Sacca, Founder and Chairman Lowercase Capital and star of ABC’s Shark Tank hosted an event at Galvanize.
