Hillary Clinton Campaigns in Delaware and Pennsylvania

On the eve of Tuesday’s primaries, Hillary Clinton spoke at Get Out the Vote events in Delaware and Pennsylvania. Her first event was in Wilmington where she made the case that she is the best qualified for president because of her experience in Congress and as Secretary of State. During her speech, Clinton criticized Republican candidate Donald Trump for being out of touch with Americans saying, “Come out of those towers named for yourself and actually talk to people. If you want to be president of the United States, you’ve actually got to be familiar with the United States.” Despite her attacks on Trump, Clinton said that she is open to talking to Republicans in Congress to get things done for Americans.

Clinton then traveled to Youngwood, Pennsylvania where she spoke to a crowd of supporters at Westmoreland County Community College. She focused on her platform points speaking about reducing the cost of higher education, equal rights for women, and continuing the progress of the last eight years. Clinton then asked for voters support in tomorrow’s primaries saying, “If you vote for me tomorrow, I will stand up and fight for you every day.”

Clinton’s final Get Out the Vote rally was in Philadelphia. In her final speech before voters head to the polls, Clinton spoke about a number of her platform points including requiring mandatory background checks before any gun purchase, expanding early childhood education funding, lower the cost of a college education, reducing the debt of college graduates, and ensuring equal pay for women. She spoke about the importance of the 2016 election before asking for voters support in tomorrow’s primary. Videos from today’s events will be posted when/if available.

Hillary Clinton Participates in MSNBC Town Hall

During a special edition of MSNBC’s Hardball, Hillary Clinton participated in an exclusive town hall event from Springfield, Illinois. Host Chris Matthews asked Clinton about a variety of topics including trade, the economy, her vote on the Iraq War, and what she things of Republican front-runner Donald Trump. Of Trump she said, “To be here, in this state Capitol, in this room where Abraham Lincoln gave that speech about ‘a house divided’ and to see that someone who is vying to be president of the United States is using divisiveness, is stoking fear, is pointing fingers, scapegoating against all kinds of people, I think is so dangerous.” You can watch clips from the town hall at the following links: Part 1, Part 2, Part 3, and Part 4.

Clinton Hosts Iowa Events

On Tuesday, Hillary Rodham Clinton hosted two events in the key swing state of Iowa. She began the day at a community forum in Davenport. During the event, Clinton spoke about heath care saying that more needed to be done to give Iowans and Americans more affordable choices. She also spoke about gun control and called for background checks, reducing higher education costs, and fighting poverty. She also criticized Jeb Bush for his “stuff happens” comment in regards to the mass shooting in Oregon. Bush was campaigning nearby Bettendorf. After speaking briefly, Clinton took questions from the crowd. Videos from the event in Davenport are below.

Following the event, Clinton took the the streets in Davenport where she met with voters and went shopping in a local market. Later in the day, Clinton attended an organizing event at the Strawberry Farm Bed and Breakfast in Muscatine. Clinton, again, spoke about her plans as president, but she took a moment to talk about her Republican rivals and their difficulty naming any of her accomplishments as Secretary of State in the recent Republican debate. So, she sent them each a copy of her book! She said, “You know, I hear the Republicans talking from time to time in their debates and elsewhere and they say things like, ‘Oh, I don’t know what she accomplished as Secretary of State. She didn’t accomplish anything.’ I listened to that for a while. And then I thought maybe they just don’t know, so I have now sent each of them a copy of my book, Hard Choices, about what we did during those four years.” She joked that there are enough candidates running on the Republican ticket that they could start a book club. She then went on to discuss a number of her accomplishments at the State Department.

Clinton Delivers Human Rights Campaign Keynote Address

This morning, Hillary Rodham Clinton gave the keynote address for the Human Rights Campaign breakfast. During her speech, Clinton pledged to make LGBT rights a top priority as president. She urged Congress to pass the Federal Equality Act to end discrimination against the LGBT community and provide more openness in the US Military. She said, “I see the injustices and the dangers that you and your families still face and I’m running for president to end them once and for all.” Clinton then went on to criticize Republican presidential candidates, specifically Ben Carson and Senator Ted Cruz, for not supporting gay rights. Clinton has made LGBT rights central to her presidential campaign’s platform and vowed to continue fighting saying, “That’s a promise, from one HRC to another.”

Clinton Interviewed by Extra

On Monday, the entertainment news show Extra aired part one of its interview between host Mario Lopez and Hillary Rodham Clinton. During the interview, Clinton answered questions about her email and Republican opponent Donald Trump. Lopez then asked Clinton about her selfie with Kim Kardashian and her thoughts on Kanye West’s announcement during the MTV Video Music Awards that he was running for president in 2020. About a possible run by West, Clinton said, “Well, if I’m going for my second term, [I would ask him] to wait four years, but if I’m not… be sure he has comfortable shoes because there’s a lot of walking involved.”

Clinton Holds Round Table in Puerto Rico

On Friday, Hillary Rodham Clinton held a round table event at the Centro Cardiovascular de Puerto Rico y del Caribe in San Juan, Puerto Rico where she discussed health care and Puerto Rico’s economic challenges. Puerto Rico’s government is struggling to make payments on its $72 billion debt. Clinton’s event was held less than ten miles away from an event being held by Republican presidential candidate Marco Rubio. Clinton and Rubio disagree on Puerto Rico’s option of filing for Chapter 9 bankruptcy. Clinton supports the plan while Rubio opposes it.

Clinton listened to the concerns of those attending the round table event. Health care was the central topic, specifically the Affordable Care Act and Puerto Rican doctors leaving for the mainland. The primary theme of Clinton’s discussion was including Puerto Rico in American policy. She said, “One of the challenges we face, which we will discuss today, is the unfortunate legacy of inconsistent, incoherent and inequitable treatment for health care here in Puerto Rico. As president I will do everything I can to put Puerto Rico on a path towards equal treatment.” A video from the round table event is below.

Next week, Clinton hits the road again and will make stops in Illinois, Ohio, and Wisconsin. She is also scheduled to appear on The Ellen DeGeneres Show on September 10.

Clinton Pitches College Tuition Plan in New Hampshire

On Monday, Hillary Rodham Clinton unveiled what she is calling the “New College Compact” in which she pledges to make college more affordable for students. She proposes to accomplish this by making more grants and low interest loans available while lowering the cost of education. The plan is estimated to cost $350 billion over 10 years. Speaking at Exeter High School, she said, “College is supposed to help people achieve their dreams, but more and more paying for college actually pushes those dreams further and further out of reach. That is a betrayal of everything college is supposed to represents.”

The plan includes a number of proposals to keep tuition low and the schools invested in their students. One of the proposals is called “skin-in-the-game” where a college is fined for any student who cannot pay off their student loans. She would continue President Barack Obama’s plan to provide free community college, crack down on for-profit institutions, and simplify income-based repayment plans for student loan borrowers. Then, she held a press conference answering questions from reporters.

On Tuesday, Clinton remained in New Hampshire and took her college affordability plan to River Valley Community College in Claremont. Clinton discussed the plan she unveiled on Monday, but went further attacking Republican presidential candidate Scott Walker for cutting higher education funding as governor of Wisconsin. She said, “You take somebody like Governor Walker of Wisconsin who seems to be delighted in slashing the investment in higher education in his state. Eliminating the opportunities for young people who are doctors or dentists to actually work in underserved areas in return for having their debts relieved; ending scholarships for poor kids; and most surprisingly to me, rejecting legislation that would have made it tax deductible for you, on your income tax, to deduct the amount of your loan payment.” A video from Clinton’s speech on Tuesday is below:
