Kaine Campaigns in Pennsylvania, Meg Whitman in Colorado

On Tuesday, Tim Kaine began a two-day campaign in Pennsylvania with two events. The first event was in Erie where he spoke about Hillary Clinton’s jobs plan and her proposal to increase investments to improve the country’s infrastructure. Kaine criticized Donald Trump for not releasing his income tax returns and his close ties to Russia and Russian President Vladimir Putin. Kaine also responded to questions about Clinton’s health saying, “Can I give you an up-close-and-personal on this? I have been on the trail with Hillary for five weeks, and I can barely keep up with her!” A video from the event is below.

Kaine traveled to Lancaster where he spoke to a group of supporters at the local Boys and Girls Club. During his speech, Kaine touted Clinton’s plan to build the economy by creating millions of jobs, in fact, the most since World War II. He explained that Pennsylvania would benefit with a gain of over 400,000 jobs. Kaine also spoke about Trump calling on him to release his tax returns as both he and Clinton have done. He also criticized Trump’s divisive language warning that we need to work together to move America forward. A video of Kaine’s speech is below.

Meanwhile, in Denver, Colorado, former CEO of Hewlett-Packard Meg Whitman campaigned on behalf of Clinton and Kaine. During an event, she spoke about her political background as a Republican and why she is supporting Clinton over Trump. “If you are a lifelong Republican, it’s hard to come across (the partisan divide). But I decided that this year it was clear to me that Secretary Clinton’s temperament, leadership experience and commitment to America’s foundational values make her the far better choice for president.” Colorado Governor John Hickenlooper also spoke at the event.

Yesterday, a fundraiser was held in Pensacola Beach, Florida on behalf of Hillary for America. The event featured a conversation with Senator Bill Nelson. A fundraiser was held today in Concord, Massachusetts. The event was held at the home of Allison Picott and Michael Goldstein and included a conversation with Congresswoman Niki Tsongas.

Today during a rally in Michigan, Donald Trump asked the African American community “What do you have to lose? You’re living in poverty. Your Schools are no good. You have no jobs.” Hillary for America Director of State Campaigns and Political Engagement Marlon Marshall has an answer for Trump:

“Donald Trump asks what the African American community has to lose by voting for him. The answer is everything from a man who questions the citizenship of the first African American President, courts white supremacists, and has been sued for housing discrimination against communities of color.

“Trump painting the entire community as living in poverty with no jobs continues to show he is completely out of touch with the African American community.”

TRUMP WAS TWICE SUED BY THE DEPARTMENT OF JUSTICE FOR DISCRIMINATING IN HOUSING

October 1973: The Justice Department Filed A Civil Rights Case Against Trump Management Inc. For Discriminating Against Blacks And Puerto Ricans. “The employees allegedly directed blacks and Puerto Ricans away from buildings with mostly white tenants, and steered them toward properties that had many minorities, the government filings alleged. In October 1973, the Justice Department filed a civil rights case that accused the Trump firm, whose complexes contained 14,000 apartments, of violating the Fair Housing Act of 1968.” [Washington Post, 1/23/16]

Donald Trump was then president of the family real estate firm, and the government amassed overwhelming evidence that the company had a policy of discriminating against blacks, including those serving in the military… Donald Trump furiously fought the civil rights suit in the courts and the media, but the Trumps eventually settled on terms that were widely regarded as a victory for the government. Retired Marine General John R. Allen Endorses Hillary Clinton

Hillary Clinton received the endorsement of retired Marine General John R. Allen earlier this week. In a statement, General Allen said that he supported Clinton because of her “patience and a deep comprehension of the international landscape.” He went on to say that he has avoided the political arena, but felt like endorsing Clinton now was the time to speak up. “Through 37 years of service in the U.S. Marine Corps, I saw some of the toughest challenges that our nation faces around the world, and I know that America has the power to meet those challenges. However, it requires continued leadership and engagement in the world, continued partnership with our allies, and a clear understanding of our adversaries. It requires patience and a deep comprehension of the international landscape to make smart decisions about when and how to use military force as well as an understanding that other tools of American power such as diplomacy and development aid – that will armed forces out of harm’s way unless it is absolutely necessary.  And it requires a leader who wants to understand these complex issues and seek advice and counsel.  Hillary Clinton is all of those things. 

This has been a very personal decision for me. I have stayed out of the political arena my entire adult life, but given the complexities of issues facing our country today and its longtime allies, I felt compelled to speak up and be heard. I have no doubt that she is the leader we need at this time to keep our country safe, and I trust her with that most sacred responsibility of Commander-in-Chief.”

DNC Wrap-Up: Day 2

On Tuesday evening, the second night of the Democratic National Convention in Philadelphia made history by officially nominating Hillary Clinton as the Democratic Party’s candidate for president. Clinton becomes the first female candidate to receive the nomination of a major political party. Clinton made a brief appearance via satellite from New York and thanked everyone for their support. She will officially accept the party’s nomination during her speech on Thursday.

In additional to the historic moment, the evening also featured another marquee night of speeches. Those taking the stage included Former Senator Tom Harkin, Virginia Governor Terry McAuliffe, Senator Chuck Schumer, the principal and students from Eagle Academy, Former Attorney General Eric Holder, Senator Barbara Boxer, Representative Joseph Crowley, Mothers of the Moment, former Governor of Vermont Howard Dean, and actress Meryl Streep. The most powerful speech of the evening was delivered by President Bill Clinton. He focused on he and Hillary’s relationship and personal life. He called Hillary “the best darn change-maker” that he has ever seen and said that she will fight for everyone and does not back down from a fight. The DNC is also featuring a series of videos highlighting Clinton’s career and personal life. Included in those videos Tuesday was one covering her time as Secretary of State and one about how she worked with the Eagle Academy. A third video was about the career of Bill Clinton. Hillary Clinton Nominated by the Democratic Party

It is official! Tonight, the Democratic Party’s delegates cast their ballots to nominate the party’s presidential candidate. Hillary Clinton won the vote in the first round becoming the first female nominee of a major political party. The nomination is the culmination of over forty years of public service. Clinton will speak during the Democratic National Convention on Thursday to accept the party’s nomination.

Democratic National Convention Details

We are a little over a month away from the 2016 Democratic National Convention. The convention will be held in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania at the Wells Fargo Center. The event will be held July 25 – 28 and will include delegates from all 50 states, Washington, DC, and U.S. territories. The main purpose of the convention is the formal nomination of the Democratic Party’s presidential and vice-presidential candidates. Democrat Hillary Clinton secured the required number of delegates required for the nomination in early June making her the first female presidential candidate to secure the nomination of a major political party. The Clinton camp is now working to select a running mate and build her team.

Hillary Clinton is the Presumptive Democratic Nominee

Following yesterday’s primary in Puerto Rico and the addition of pledged superdelegates, the AP and other new outlets have reported Hillary Clinton has reached the necessary 2,383 delegates to secure the Democratic Party’s nomination for president. The nomination is historic as Clinton becomes the first female presidential nominee of a major political party. In Long Beach, California, Clinton addressed the news saying, “According to the news, we are on the brink of a historic, historic, unprecedented moment but we still have work to do don’t we? We have six elections tomorrow and we are going to fight hard for every single vote especially right here in California!”

On Twitter, Clinton’s team downplayed the headline saying that she is still fighting for votes in the six states that vote tomorrow: California, Montana, New Mexico, North Dakota, New Jersey, and South Dakota. Campaign manager Robby Mook said in a statement, “This is an important milestone, but there are six states that are voting Tuesday, with millions of people heading to the polls, and Hillary Clinton is working to earn every vote. We look forward to Tuesday night, when Hillary Clinton will clinch not only a win in the popular vote, but also the majority of pledged delegates.” Tomorrow night, Clinton is hosting an election night party in Brooklyn where she is expected to celebrate securing the number of delegates required for the nomination.

Hillary Clinton Campaigns in California on Eve of Primary

Hillary Clinton wrapped up five days of campaigning in California by speaking at several events in Los Angeles area. Clinton’s first event of the day was a Get Out the Vote event in Lynwood where she told supporters about a number of her platform points including equal pay for women, raising the minimum wage, growing the economy, and passing comprehensive immigration reform. Throughout her speech, she criticized Republican nominee Donald Trump for his stance on a number of topics and his divisive rhetoric. Clinton stressed the importance of voting tomorrow saying that a California win would mean a lot to her. Videos of her speech are below (in two parts)

Before her speech in Lynwood, Clinton took several minutes to speak to the press. She was asked about yesterday’s win in the Puerto Rico primary and her thoughts on the prospect of being the first female nominee by a major political party. Clinton said that she is honored to win in Puerto Rico, and she is focused on the six states that vote tomorrow. Clinton was also asked about her thoughts on her race with Bernie Sanders and her plans to go forward against Trump. Clinton said that it is important for the Democratic Party to unify against Trump, and she said that she will reach out to Sanders to work with him and his supporters. Clinton then spoke at rallies in South Los Angeles and Long Beach. During each event, she spoke about her platform points and attacked Trump for his divisive nature. Before the event in Long Beach, news outlets had declared Clinton the presumptive nominee for the Democratic Party, but she downplayed the projection saying that there was still a lot of work to be done. She urged supporters to get out and vote for her tomorrow because a win in California would be a great way to begin the general election. A video from the Long Beach event is below.

Clinton’s final event of the night was an appearance at the She’s With Us Concert held at The Greek Theatre. The concert featured performances by Christina Aguilera, Andra Day, John Legend, Ricky Martin, and Stevie Wonder. While Clinton’s appearance was brief, the performers and celebrity guests warmed up the crowd by talking about Clinton’s plans as well as attacking Trump. Other speakers at the event included Cher, Jamie Foxx, Eva Longoria, Mary Steenburgen, Kate Walsh, Chrissy Teigen, and Magic Johnson.

Bill Clinton Campaigns in New Mexico, California

On Thursday, Bill Clinton campaigned on behalf of Hillary in two states. He began in New Mexico where he spoke at a Get Out the Vote event at Picacho Middle School in Las Cruces. During his speech, Bill spoke about the importance of the 2016 election and a number of Hillary’s platform points. He stressed the importance of continuing the economic growth and said that includes making the economy work for everyone and not just those at the top. Bill spoke about a number of other platform topics including refinancing student debt, expanding health care coverage, and creating new jobs. A video from the event will be posted when/if available.

Bill then traveled to California where he spoke at a rally in Redding. During the event at Shasta College, Bill spoke about voter anger and how he understood the attitude toward the current political environment. But he said that Republican nominee Donald Trump is not the answer. He spoke about Hillary’s experience and her platform points and why she is the better choice for the country moving forward. He said the way America moves forward is by working together and realizing we get more accomplished that way. Bill said, “You gotta believe in a tomorrow economy and you gotta believe in cooperation, not conflict, and you can’t turn people away at the door because you don’t like their religion or their race or their whatever.” He concluded by asking for voters’ support in next week’s primary. Meanwhile, a number of Hillary supporters attended fundraisers on behalf of Hillary for America. In New York City, Chelsea Clinton attended a fundraising event at One Kings Lane. In St. Helena, California, Senior Policy Advisor Ann O’Leary attended a fundraiser hosted by Congressman Mike and Jan Thompson and Progressive Women of Napa Valley. Tennis champion Billie Jean King hosted a Discussion on Breaking Down Barriers in Paris, France. The event was for American citizens and was hosted by Forrest Alogna, Pamela Boulet, Belinda De Gaudemar, Hedieh Khakbaz Loubier, Marina Niforos, Elizabeth Pierson Sainty, Joe Smallhoover, Valerie Picard, Mindy Prugnaud, and Lawrence Yanovitch.
