Clinton, Trump Clash on Policy at Final Debate

On Wednesday night, presidential candidates Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump faced off for their final debate before the election on November 8th. The debate was moderated by Fox News’ Chris Wallace, who did a pretty good job of keeping the candidates on topic. The topics covered at the debate included debt, entitlements, immigration, the economy, the Supreme Court, foreign hot spots, and “fitness to be president.” While each candidate took shots at each other, Clinton outlined a number of her proposals. Each candidate wrapped up the final debate with a one-minute closing statement. Clinton asked for America’s vote saying:

“Well, I would like to say to everyone watching tonight that I’m reaching out to all Americans — Democrats, Republicans, and Independents. Because we need everybody to help make our country what it should be. To grow the economy, to make it fairer, to make it work for everyone. We need your talents, your skills, your commitment, your energy, your ambition. You know, I’ve been privileged to see the presidency up close and I know the awesome responsibility of protecting our country and the incredible opportunity of working to try to make life better for all of you. I have made the cause of children and families really my life’s work — that’s what my mission will be in the presidency. I will stand up for families against powerful interests, against corporations. I will do everything I can to make sure you have good jobs with rising incomes, that your kids have good educations from preschool through college. I hope you will give me a chance to serve as your president.”

While pundits will argue who won and who lost last night’s debate, what is important is who you feel will best represent you. This political cycle has become more about personality and less about the issues at stake. Both candidates have outlined a series of policies they believe are important to them and that says a lot about their beliefs. What is key is that on November 8, you have a choice. You have a voice at the ballot box and make sure it is heard. Vote.

Clinton Will Appoint Supreme Court Justices Who Affirm Our Rights, While Trump’s Justices Will Roll Rights Back

The fourth topic for tonight’s debate is the Supreme Court. America’s next president could nominate multiple Supreme Court justices and the stakes could not be higher. Appointments made in the next four years could determine the makeup of the Court for decades to come. Hillary Clinton will appoint justices who will affirm the dignity and equality of all Americans. In contrast, Donald Trump will appoint justices who will roll back hard-fought rights.

*Considering Trump has been involved in more than 4,000 lawsuits, he should know this is not how the justice system works.

Hillary Clinton will appoint justices to the Supreme Court who will protect the constitutional principles of liberty and equality for all, and make sure Roe v. Wade remains the law of the land and women retain the right to make their own deeply personal healthcare decisions. Hillary will make sure the scales of justice aren’t tipped away from individuals toward corporations and special interests. And she will protect citizens’ right to vote, rather than billionaires’ right to buy elections.

Donald Trump has demonstrated his desire to appoint justices who would roll back rights Americans have fought for over decades. As president, Trump will:

• Appoint justices who would overturn Roe v. Wade.
• Appoint justices who would overturn the Supreme Court’s decision on marriage equality.
• Appoint justices who would weaken the Affordable Care Act.
• Consider justices with a history of supporting restrictive voter ID laws.
• Consider the heritage of an American citizen when evaluating fitness to serve as a federal judge.
• Pursue policies that ignore cornerstone constitutional principles, including imposing a religious test on immigrants; profiling U.S. Muslims; registering all Muslims in a “database”; punishing women for having an abortion; nationalizing New York City’s old stop-and-frisk policy; shutting down religious institutions; “open up those libel laws”; and retroactively repealing birthright citizenship.

Hillary Clinton Endorsed by Vogue Magazine

In its first ever presidential endorsement, Vogue magazine endorsed Hillary Clinton yesterday saying, “For all the chaos and unpredictability and the sometimes appalling spectacle of this election season, the question of which candidate actually deserves to be president has never been a difficult one. Vogue has no history of political endorsements. Editors in chief have made their opinions known from time to time, but the magazine has never spoken in an election with a single voice. Given the profound stakes of this one, and the history that stands to be made, we feel that should change. Senator Sanders, Anne Holton Campaign for Hillary

On Monday, Senator Bernie Sanders campaigned on behalf of Hillary Clinton in Colorado. At a Get out the Vote event on the campus of Colorado State University in Fort Collins, he spoke about a variety of issues including the rising cost of a higher education, income inequality, immigration, and health care. Sanders addressed how Clinton and the Democratic platform would address of each of the issues and urged them to get out and vote on November 8th. “Politics and political engagement does not end on Election Day. We need you on the day after the election,” he said urging the crowd, most of them student, to remain politically active following the election. A video of Sanders’ speech is below.

Anne Holton, wife of Clinton’s running mate Tim Kaine, was in Florida where she held two events in Pensacola. Her first stop was a Women for Hillary event during which she spoke about a number of Clinton’s platform points including plans to increase the minimum wage, create new jobs, ensure equal pay for women, and provide paid family leave. She praised the campaign run by Clinton and Kaine saying, “It is important to have that person-to-person contact, it is even more important with the negativity we have had this campaign season. Holton also spoke with volunteers and supporters at a local canvass kick-off. She encouraged them to keep knocking on doors, putting up signs, and making phone calls. Meanwhile, three fundraisers were held on behalf of Hillary for America as the final fundraising deadline approaches. The first was in Bethesda, Maryland where Tim Kaine attended a private fundraising event. Then, in Dallas, Texas, a LGBT and Allies event was held featuring a conversation with Vic Holmes, Mark Phariss, and Steve Rudner. In New York City, a Broadway for Hillary event was held. The event featured an appearance by Chelsea Clinton but a number of performances. The performers included: Sara Bareilles, Angela Bassett, Emily Blunt, Matthew Broderick, Ayodele Casel, Alan Cumming, Cynthia Erivo, Renée Elise Goldsberry, Josh Groban, Jake Gyllenhaal, Neil Patrick Harris, Anne Hathaway, Hugh Jackman, Sarah Jones, Andrea McArdle, Sienna Miller, Lin-Manuel Miranda, Helen Mirren, Sarah Jessica Parker, Bernadette Peters, and Julia Roberts. Senators Sanders and Warren Campaign in Colorado

On Sunday evening, Senators Bernie Sanders and Elizabeth Warren campaigned on behalf of Hillary Clinton in Denver, Colorado. Warren took the stage first and fired up the crowd at the Aurari campus student union hall where she spoke about the importance of defeating Republican Donald Trump in November. Sanders then took the stage and spoke about Clinton’s progressive platform, a platform he had a hand in creating. He said that electing Clinton is important, “We’re going to beat Trump and beat him badly. … And we’re going to bring millions of people together to create a political revolution. If we don’t get our act together, this country’s going to slide into oligarchy.” Watch a video from the event below.

Hillary Clinton Endorsed by More Local Newspapers

This weekend, Hillary Clinton received the endorsement of four major prominent newspapers from across the country. The first was Nebraska’s Omaha World-Herald, the first time the paper has endorsed a Democrat since President Franklin D. Roosevelt in 1932. The paper’s editorial board says that while Clinton has political faults, she is by far more qualified than Republican Donald Trump. The board concludes, “Clinton’s legislative experience and decades of political involvement — as first lady of Arkansas, first lady of the United States, U.S. senator from New York, secretary of state and two-time presidential candidate — make her the better prepared of the two major candidates for the office of president of the United States.” Read the full endorsement HERE.

The Wisconsin State Journal also published their endorsement of Clinton concluding that the country cannot risk a Trump presidency. The paper’s board said, “Trump’s scandal-a-day campaign has shown he would distract, isolate and embarrass our nation. The world doesn’t need a United States in retreat, nor a stark reset of America’s politics and international posture. The world needs a U.S. president who can actually lead. Clinton has also earned the endorsement of the New Orleans newspaper The Times-Picayune. The paper’s editorial board says that Clinton is the better choice for New Orleans and Louisiana saying, “As for which candidate is better for Louisiana, there is no contest. Mrs. Clinton is committed to investments in infrastructure, including ports, that would benefit our state. She also wants to offer preschool to every 4-year-old, something that fits Louisiana’s goal of expanding and improving the quality of early childhood education. But for New Orleanians, perhaps the most compelling contrast between Mr. Trump and Mrs. Clinton is his intolerance and her inclusiveness. New Orleans has diversity in its DNA. In Iowa, The Des Moines Register’s editorial board asked what message Americas wanted to send to a ever interested global community. Do we want to pick the candidate that has run a divisive campaign or one that still believes in the promise of America? The board believes it is important that the American citizens elect a leader that represents our values, and for them that is Clinton. They conclude, “On Election Day, all of us share the privilege and responsibility of protecting the principles on which this country was founded and for which so many others have died: justice, liberty, equality and opportunity for all. In this particular election, only one of the two major-party candidates stands prepared to honor America and uphold its highest ideals. Hillary Clinton Endorsed by Two More Local Newspapers

On Friday, Hillary Clinton received the endorsement of two major local newspapers. The first was Florida’s Miami Herald. The paper’s editorial board makes their case for Clinton is their opening paragraph saying, “Let’s make clear what the 2016 presidential election isn’t about: It is not about choosing between a bad candidate and a worse one. The narrative that Hillary Clinton is the lesser of two evils is patently wrong. Ms. Clinton is a pragmatic, tough-minded woman of accomplishment and political conviction with a demonstrated mastery of policy. She is politically flawed. However, Donald Trump is a damaged human being.” The board continues by making the case for Clinton by exploring her career and her positions on a number of issues.

The second newspaper added to the growing list of papers backing Clinton is the Idaho Statesman. In their op-ed, the editorial board makes the case for why Clinton is the best candidate for Idaho because of her policies, experience, and history of bipartisanship. Ultimately the board concludes, “Trump’s fantasies about a new country and era where “outsiders” are better equipped to fix Washington will always be undefined and out of reach. The need to compromise could never happen with him in charge. We live in the real world, with real problems that need real solutions. We need someone with pragmatic approaches that include patience and compassion. Bill Clinton Campaigns in OH, Chelsea in PA

On Friday, Bill Clinton campaigned for Hillary Clinton in Ohio at events in Delaware and Cincinnati. At both events, Bill focused on the issues and Hillary’s plans to held grow the economy and support the middle class. In Delaware, Bill was interrupted by protestors which led him to address anger. He said that he understand why people are mad at the political system, but he explained that anger may feel good, but it does not achieve results. “Anger and resentment and conflict may win a lot of attention, but it won’t put a single soul to work, it won’t save a single life in a complicated world, it won’t give a single person … a chance to fulfill their dreams,” he said. Chelsea Clinton was in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania where she attended two events. Her first event was a Women for Hillary event where she spoke about Hillary’s plans to ensure equal pay for women and paid family leave. She also spoke about the hateful rhetoric being spewed by Donald Trump, and in particular his comments about women. “I never thought I would see in lifetime the type of rhetoric we’ve heard from Donald Trump and his campaign. We have to stand against the normalization of hate speech,” she said. Chelsea then answered questions from those in attendance.

Chelsea then spoke at the University of Pittsburgh where she focused on Hillary’s plans to reduce student loan interest rates for those currently repaying student loans, making public college tuition free for families making less than $125,000 per year, and ensuring equal rights for women and the LGBTQ community. Bill, Chelsea Clinton Campaign for Hillary on Thursday

Today, Bill Clinton continued his bus tour in Iowa with stops in Mount Vernon and Davenport. At his first event in Mount Vernon, Bill spoke with supporters on the campus of Cornell College. He focused on the issues saying that we, as a country, can do better than Donald Trump, and that his message is divisive at a time when we need more unity. Bill continued saying that the “us versus them” mentality is not productive. He urged everyone to vote on November 8th because this election will set the tone for the country for the next four years. Bill wrapped up his bus tour in Iowa at an event in Davenport. During the event, Bill was interrupted by protestors and Trump supporters that were removed by local police. He responded to the protests by criticizing Trump’s message saying, “If you serve poison for breakfast, lunch, and dinner for a year and a half, somebody’s going to drink it and give it back.” Bill then continued with his usual campaign speech in which he outlined Hillary’s platform points and an optimistic view of the future. “You want to elect somebody President who believes everybody’s got a story. Everybody deserves human dignity. Everybody deserves a chance to live their dreams. We all do better when we work together,” he said. Videos from the events will be posted when/if available.

Chelsea Clinton spoke with supporters at an organizing event on the campus of the University of Maine in Orono, Maine. Chelsea outlined her mother’s plan for the United States and her focus on economic equality. She said that she understands the anger with the current political system, but that Hillary will fight for those who need a voice. “I’m really proud that she does sweat the details, even though her opponent criticizes her for being too prepared. Because if it’s your child or your family or the future of our planet those are (important) details, so I’m so proud of my mom and of her campaign and even more her life of work and advocacy, because this election is about our future but it’s ultimately about our values.” A video of Chelsea’s speech is below.

Hillary Clinton Endorsed by Foreign Policy

Hillary Clinton has been endorsed by Foreign Policy magazine. The endorsement is the first of its kind from the publication as it has never endorsed a political candidate for any office. Explaining their reasoning for breaking their tradition of staying out of politics, the editorial board said, “We cherish and fiercely protect this publication’s independence and its reputation for objectivity, and we deeply value our relationship with all of our readers, regardless of political orientation. It is for all these reasons that FP’s editors are now breaking with tradition to endorse Hillary Clinton for the next president of the United States.” They continued to explain that Clinton’s broad background in government makes her uniquely qualified for the White House while Republican Donald Trump provides new reasons each day why he is not.
