FBI Director Comey Recommends No New Action Against Clinton

FBI Director James Comey sent a letter to ranking members of Congress on Sunday with the bureau’s conclusions following an investigation into emails found on a computer owned by former Congressman Anthony Weiner. The emails were related to Hillary Clinton’s tenure as Secretary of State. In his letter, Comey says that the FBI stands by its decision to not bring a case against Clinton and that the new emails yielded no new information. Comes said that “based on our review, we have not changed our conclusions that we expressed in July with respect to Secretary Clinton.” Since the FBI announced it was looking into the emails last week, the Clinton campaign has maintained that there was nothing new to be found. News sources indicate that the majority of the emails found on the computer were duplicates of the emails already reviewed by the bureau. Hillary Clinton Attends Daytona Beach Canvass Kick-Off

Hillary Clinton spoke at a canvass kick-off rally in Daytona Beach, Florida on Saturday. She began the event by addressing yesterday’s revelation that the FBI is is looking into “new evidence” related to her emails. Clinton called on FBI Director James Comey to release the full details of the investigation for the benefit of American voters saying, “Some of you may have heard about a letter written by the FBI director. You probably have a few questions about it. It is pretty strange to put something like that out with such little information right before an election. In fact, it’s not just strange, it’s unprecedented and deeply troubling.”

Clinton then gave one of her typical campaign stump speeches in which she laid out several of her proposed policies. She stressed the importance of the election and said it is about more then just Republican vs. Democrat. This election is about the direction of our country. She said, “Everything we care about is at stake. The American dream itself is at stake.” Clinton said that Donald Trump’s hope is that women, young people, and minorities do not turn out to vote, but she urged everyone to vote saying, “That goes against everything we stand for. And do you know how to stop him? By showing up with the greatest turnout of voters ever. Let’s break every record.” Watch a video Clinton’s speech below.

HFA Statement on Report That Trump Used Business Failures to Avoid Paying Taxes

Hillary for America Campaign Manager Robby Mook released the following statement following a report from The New York Times revealing that Donald Trump used his business losses to avoid paying income taxes.

“There it is. This bombshell report reveals the colossal nature of Donald Trump’s past business failures and just how long he may have avoided paying any federal income taxes whatsoever. In one year, Donald Trump lost nearly a billion dollars. A billion. He stiffed small businesses, laid off workers, and walked away from hardworking communities. And how did it work out for him? He apparently got to avoid paying taxes for nearly two decades — while tens of millions of working families paid theirs. He calls that ‘smart.’ Now that the gig is up, why doesn’t he go ahead and release his returns to show us all how ‘smart’ he really is?”

Hillary Clinton Statement on the Jewish High Holidays

Before the beginning of Rosh Hashanah Sunday, Hillary Clinton released the following statement:

“As the High Holiday celebrations begin, I send my best wishes for a Shana Tova – a happy and healthy new year – to Jewish families and communities in the United States, Israel, and around the world.

Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur are a time for prayer and contemplation.  They are a time to recall our past year, take a hard look at what we’ve done and what we’ve said, and ask how we can do better in the year ahead.  They challenge us to do the difficult work of self-reflection—key to becoming a better family member, friend, and neighbor.

Our country must do this work as a national community, too.  All Americans should question whether we’re doing all that we can to work on “Tikkun Olam”—repairing the world.  That means asking ourselves if we could be doing more to help those who are hungry or in need of shelter.  If we could be doing more to make sure everyone has access to health care.  And if we could be doing more to build a brighter future where no one is left out or left behind.

It’s critical to ask these tough questions.  And then, at the conclusion of the High Holidays, it’s even more important to get to work and answer them.

Many of the complex challenges we face as a nation are daunting—but luckily, we don’t have to face them alone.  We are stronger together, and if we commit to work in good faith with one another, surely we can build a better world for future generations.

This year’s High Holidays are saddened by the passing of President Shimon Peres, a man whose life’s work exemplifies the notion of Tikkun Olam.  Let us honor his legacy by continuing to strengthen the bonds between the American and Israeli people, and by never wavering in our quest for peace.

May the coming year be filled with sweetness and joy.”

Hillary Clinton Campaigns with Senator Sanders in New Hampshire

Hillary Clinton and Senator Bernie Sanders teamed up for a campaign event focused on reducing the cost of higher education. Speaking at the University of New Hampshire in Durham, Senator Sanders spoke about his support for Hillary Clinton and her “new college compact.” Clinton then took the stage and spoke about a number of the compact’s key points including her plan to reduce interest rates on student loans and how future college students whose families make less than $125,000 per year will be able to graduate from a public college or trade school debt free. Speaking of her own experience following graduation she said, “I could never have done that if I had the kind of interest rates a lot of people are facing. We are going to fix it. This is wrong.” Clinton said that she believes it is wrong for the government to profit on students’ education. Clinton and Sanders then took part in a question and answer period with those in attendance. A full video from the event is below.

Chelsea Clinton and Anne Holton Campaign for Hillary

Chelsea Clinton and Anne Holton continued to meet with voters across the country today. Chelsea began in Greeneville, North Carolina where she spoke at East Carolina University. Chelsea covered a number of Hillary Clinton’s platform plans including her new college compact. Under the plan, students repaying student loans would be able to refinance their loans at lower interest rates thus saving money. Future students whose families make less than $125,000 a year and attend a public college or technical school will be able to graduate debt-free.

In Asheville, Chelsea spoke to a group of supporters at The Collider. She focused her remarks on climate change and renewable energy. Chelsea spoke about how Hillary’s plans will invest in clean energy while creating jobs, especially in parts of North Carolina who have been affected by the shrinking fossil fuel industry. “We need to be building solar panel factories exactly in those places. We need to be investing in coal country and in places where those kind of jobs have slowly disappeared as the industry has waned.” Videos from today’s events will be posted when/if available.

Holton campaigned on behalf of Hillary today in Michigan. In Lansing, Holton held a “Moms for Hillary” roundtable discussion where they discussed a number of issues such as childcare costs, education costs, and equal pay. She then traveled to Grand Rapids where she held an education roundtable where she spoke about Hillary’s plan to reduce the cost of higher education and her plan to expand early childhood education. Holton has a background in education with her most recently serving as Secretary of Education for the state of Virginia. A video from the events will be posted when/if available.

Group of Prominent Business Leaders Backing Clinton Grows

On Friday, Hillary for America released a name of prominent business leaders who support Hillary Clinton for president. A full copy of HFA’s release is below.

The group of prominent business leaders backing Hillary Clinton continued to grow today with more than 40 additional leaders. These leaders share Clinton’s belief that we are stronger together and that Clinton is the candidate with the experience and qualifications to help build an economy that works for everyone. The endorsement comes one day after a new report from the Committee for a Responsible Federal Budget found that Donald Trump’s economic plan would balloon the debt by $5.3 trillion – 26 times more than Clinton’s according to CNBC. An independent analysis by Mark Zandi, a former economic advisor to John McCain, found that the economy would create 10.4 million jobs under Clinton’s plans, while Trump’s plans would result in a “lengthy recession” and a loss of 3.4 million jobs.

This announcement follows one from earlier this summer that included 52 business leaders backing Clinton. Clinton has laid out detailed plans to create good, high paying jobs through investment in infrastructure, research, technology, and more, as well as other policies that strengthen the climate for businesses to grow and hire. Through cost cutting, new innovations and reforms to our tax code, Clinton’s policy plans are deficit neutral.

Hillary Clinton Outlines Plan for Helping America’s Poor

In an op-ed published in The New York Times on Wednesday, Hillary Clinton outlined her proposals to help America’s poor and ensuring that they have equal access to resources. Recalling her time at the Children’s Defense Fund, Clinton says that she considers ensuring children are not raised in poverty as a top priority should she be elected president. The true measure of any society is how we take care of our children. With all of our country’s resources, no child should ever have to grow up in poverty. Yet every single night, all across America, kids go to sleep hungry or without a place to call home.

We have to do better. Advocating for children and families has been the cause of my life, starting with my first job as a young attorney at the Children’s Defense Fund, and if I have the honor of serving as president, it will be the driving mission of my administration.

The good news is that we’re making progress, thanks to the hard work of the American people and President Obama. The global poverty rate has been cut in half in recent decades. In the United States, a new report from the Census Bureau found that there were 3.5 million fewer people living in poverty in 2015 than just a year before.

Median incomes rose by 5.2 percent, the fastest growth on record. Households at all income levels saw gains, with the largest going to those struggling the most. The census report makes clear that when hard-working Americans get a small boost — like food stamps and health insurance thanks to the Affordable Care Act — they can climb out of poverty.

But make no mistake: We still have work to do. Families across the country were devastated by the Great Recession.

Nearly 40 percent of Americans between the ages of 25 and 60 will experience a year in poverty at some point. The best way to help families lift themselves out of poverty is to make it easier to find good-paying jobs. As president, one of my top priorities will be increasing economic growth that’s strong, fair and lasting. I will work with Democrats and Republicans to make a historic investment in good-paying jobs — jobs in infrastructure and manufacturing, technology and innovation, small businesses and clean energy. And we need to make sure that hard work is rewarded by raising the minimum wage and finally guaranteeing equal pay for women.

If we want to get serious about poverty, we also need a national commitment to create more affordable housing. This issue doesn’t get much election-year coverage, but it’s a big deal to the 11.4 million American households that spend more than half their incomes on rent. Too many people are putting off saving for their children or retirement just to keep a roof over their families’ heads.

My plan would expand Low Income Housing Tax Credits in high-cost areas to increase our affordable housing supply, and fuel broader community development. So if you are a family living in an expensive city, you would be able to find an affordable place to call home and have access to the transportation you need to get to good jobs and quality schools.

We also need to ensure that our investments are reaching the communities suffering the most from decades of neglect. We have got to acknowledge that even though poverty overall has fallen, extreme poverty has increased. Tim Kaine and I will model our anti-poverty strategy on Congressman Jim Clyburn’s 10-20-30 plan, directing 10 percent of federal investments to communities where 20 percent of the population has been living below the poverty line for 30 years. And we’ll put special emphasis on minority communities that have been held back for too long by barriers of systemic racism.

As president, I will continue my life’s work focused on creating opportunities for children and fairness for families. We need to expand access to high-quality child care and guarantee paid leave so parents at all income levels can balance their jobs and lives. And we will work to double investments in Early Head Start and make preschool available to every 4-year-old because our children deserve the best possible start in life.

Donald J. Trump has a different approach. He divides America into winners and losers. And he doesn’t seem to spend much time worrying about people in poverty. In fact, his economic plans would overwhelmingly benefit the wealthiest Americans, and would include an estimated $4 billion tax cut for his own family just by eliminating the estate tax. He has actually said that wages are too high. One independent economic analysis revealed that with Mr. Trump’s proposals in place, our economy would fall back into recession and inevitably push more families into poverty.

This November, the American people will have to choose between an economy that works for everyone and an economy that benefits the well off at the expense of everyone else. The choice couldn’t be clearer.
