Clinton Makes First Campaign Stop in Oklahoma

Today, Hillary Clinton was in Tulsa, Oklahoma, and I was there! This was my first time going to an event for Clinton, and I highly recommend it if you get the chance. Clinton spoke to an energetic crowd of about 1,000 at the Oklahoma Jazz Hall of Fame. She opened her speech by telling a story of her time as a lawyer in nearby Arkansas. She then went into a full rundown of her platform and plans as president. In speaking about her health care plans, Clinton took the opportunity to criticize Oklahoma Governor Mary Fallin for not taking federal funding to expand Medicaid in the state. She wrapped up her speech telling the story of her parents humble background, and in particular, her mother’s rough childhood, and how she maintained optimistic and had a chance to better herself in spite of it. Clinton said she is dedicated to ensuring that everyone has that same opportunity. A full video from today’s speech is below.

While in Tulsa, Clinton attended a private fundraiser hosted by BOK Financial Corporation chairman George Kaiser and his wife Cookie. As with all private events, the fundraiser was closed to the press.

Clinton Meets with Gun Victims’ Families

While in Chicago yesterday, Hillary Rodham Clinton held a two-hour private meeting with the families of gun victims. Clinton met with the families and had a discussion about gun violence and her plans to prevent guns from getting into the wrong hands. She has called for universal background check and closing a number of loopholes that allows people to purchase guns, avoiding the current background check system. The Clinton campaign also released a 30-second ad (above) calling for the strengthening of gun regulations in the United States

Those attending yesterday’s meeting included: Lesley McSpadden, the mother of Michael Brown, who was shot and killed by a police officer in Ferguson, Missouri; relatives of Hadiya Pendleton, a fifteen-year-old who show mistakenly killed by a gang member in Chicago; Sabrina Fulton, the mother of Trayvon Martin who was shot and killed by George Zimmerman in Florida in 2012; the family of Jordan Davis, a seventeen-year-old killed last year in Florida; Samaria Rice, mother of Tamir Rice, a twelve-year-old Ohioan who was shot by an officer who mistook his pellet gun for a real weapon; and Joy McCormack, mother of Francisco “Frankie” Valencia, a DePaul University student killed by a gang member in 2009.

Clinton Releases First Campaign Ads

Hillary Rodham Clinton’s campaign released two campaign ads that will begin airing in key battleground states, New Hampshire and Iowa. Both ads focus on family and what she learned about family values from her mother, Dorothy. The ads are more personal in nature and show how Clinton was inspired by her mother’s story to seek public office. In the ad she says, “When I think about why I’m doing this I think about my mother Dorothy. She was abandoned by her parents at the age of eight, sent from Chicago to LA to live with grandparents who didn’t want her. But people showed her kindness, gave her a chance.”

Emily’s List 30th Anniversary Gala

Hillary Rodham Clinton gave a speech at the 30th Anniversary Gala for Emily’s List where she received the We Are EMILY Award. During her speech, Clinton spoke about women in politics and the guidance her mother offered as she grew up. Several times, Clinton teased a possible 2016 presidential run, but she avoided talking about allegations that she used personal email addresses while she was Secretary of State and possibly violating the rules of the National Archives and Records Administration. Details are still emerging, but Clinton did turn over 55,000 pages of her email to the State Department and several hundred pages of her emails have been provided to a Congressional committee investigating the attack on the American diplomatic compound in Benghazi, Libya. Since learning that Clinton used personal emails, the committee has subpoenaed additional emails from her personal email accounts.
