Hillary Clinton’s Vision for An Economy Where Our Businesses, Our Workers, and Our Consumers Grow and Prosper Together

On Monday, Hillary Clinton and Hillary for America announced a plan that will ensure that businesses, workers, and consumers can all grow and prosper together. This would be a stark contrast from today’s economy in which one typically suffers at the expense of the others. HFA released details of her plan which are outlined below. Hillary Clinton believes we need to build an economy that works for everyone, not just those at the top. But today, there are still powerful interests fighting to protect their own profits and privileges at the expense of everyone else. Too many of the rules and incentives in our economy encourage those at the top to abuse their power and take advantage of consumers, workers, small businesses, and taxpayers. That makes it tougher for even well-meaning CEOs to take the high road.

In recent months, we’ve seen three egregious examples of these problems. We saw a drug company, Mylan, excessively raise the price of lifesaving EpiPens without justification. We saw one of our country’s biggest banks, Wells Fargo, bully thousands of employees into committing fraud on unsuspecting customers. And now we’ve learned the latest on Donald Trump: In one year, he lost nearly a billion dollars; he stiffed small businesses, laid off workers, and walked away from hardworking communities; and he apparently got to avoid paying taxes for nearly two decades—while tens of millions of working families paid theirs. That’s what he calls “smart” business.

Today, Clinton is offering her vision for an economy where our businesses, our workers, and our consumers grow and prosper together. She’s outlining a set of proposals to rewrite the rules so that more companies that do right by workers, small businesses, customers, and taxpayers.

Clinton will:

1. Eliminate Tax Breaks that Allow Corporations and the Wealthy to Avoid Paying Their Fair Share

• Shut down the “private tax system” for the most fortunate, starting by immediately closing egregious loopholes and restoring basic fairness to our tax code.
• Reform our tax code to reward investments in America – and stop companies from shifting jobs and profits overseas

2. Protect Consumers from Unfair and Deceptive Practices

• Strengthen consumer financial protection, including by restricting practices that businesses like Wells Fargo have used to lock the consumers they’ve harmed out of court
• Respond to unjustified price increases in long-standing, lifesaving drugs like EpiPens

3. Promoting Free and Fair Competition and Stopping Big Businesses from Hurting Small Business

• Crack down on big companies that repeatedly exploit their power to stiff small businesses – and give small businesses the power to respond
• A new commitment to promote competition, address excessive concentration and the abuse of economic power, and strengthen antitrust laws and enforcement

4. Rewrite the Rules So Workers Share in the Profits They Create

• Reward companies that share profits with their employees, not just their executives
• Fight for unions that built the American middle class and strengthen collective bargaining
• Encourage businesses to provide worker training and apprenticeships
• Make the minimum wage a living wage and fight for equal pay and overtime
• Guarantee paid leave and make affordable, high-quality childcare available to all

Hillary Clinton Wraps up Three Days of Campaigning in California

On Thursday, Hillary Clinton wrapped up a three day campaign trip to California. She began in Las Vegas, Nevada, however, where she attended the United Food & Commercial Workers (UFCW) Legislative and Political Affairs Conference. During her speech, Clinton said that Republican nominee Donald Trump is an urgent threat to workers’ rights. She said, “I’ve heard over and over again there has never been more at stake for working families in America than there is right now.” Clinton spoke about her plans to support labor unions, grow the middle class, and focus on the creation of new jobs. Clinton then traveled to San Jose where she spoke at an organizing event. She spoke about Trump again and since he is now the Republican nominee as he has secured the required number of delegates, the stakes of the 2016 election could not be higher. She spoke about a number of her platform points including defending women’s rights, fighting for equal pay, raising the minimum wage, continuing to improve the Affordable Care Act, and lowering the cost of higher education. Clinton then asked for voters’ support during the primary on June 7.

Clinton’s final event of the day was a Get Out the Vote event in San Francisco. During the event, Clinton focused on the issues and her platform proposals. She spoke about making college debt free, making community colleges free, raising the minimum wage, investing in clean energy, and continuing to improve the health care system. Clinton went on to explain why the 2016 election is so important and why electing a Democrat is so important. “Our economy does better when we have a Democrat in the White House,” she said. Bill Clinton Wraps Up Three Days of Campaigning in California

On Monday, Bill Clinton wrapped up a three day stretch on the campaign trail in California. He attended the three organizing events with the first being in Fresno. Speaking at Fresno State, Bill spoke about a number of Hillary’s platform points including her support for a higher minimum wage, comprehensive immigration reform, and continuing to grow the economy by adding new jobs. Speaking to a full student center, Bill asked for their support on June 7 when Californians go to the polls for their primary.

Bill then traveled to Stockton where he spoke to a group of supporters about a number of Hillary’s platform points and the importance of the 2016 election. He criticized presumptive Republican nominee Donald Trump’s proposals and asked the crowd an important question, “Do you really think he’s going to be a force in raising working people’s incomes? We gotta do this together.” He went on to talk about Hillary’s important proposals before asking for voters’ support saying, “I ask you to do for Hillary what California did for me – send her into the convention with the wind at her back.”

The final event of the day was at Sacramento State University. Bill continued the theme of speaking about Hillary’s experience and why she is the most qualified for the White House. Bill addressed a number of her platform points including guaranteeing LGBT rights, ensuring equal pay for women, the massive amount of student debt, and expanding health care. Following the day’s public events, Bill attended a fundraiser in support of Hillary for America. The event was held in Sacramento.

Hillary Clinton in Philadelphia and Bridgeport on Sunday

Today, Hillary Clinton was in Pennsylvania and Connecticut where she met with church goers and potential voters in Tuesday’s primaries. She began in Philadelphia where she spoke at church services at Triumph Baptist Church and African Episcopal Church of St. Thomas. At both churches, Clinton spoke about her plans to seek criminal justice reform and fight the gun lobby by introducing stronger gun regulations. She said, “We as a people have to start showing each other more respect, more kindness more love.” She spoke briefly about the importance of the 2016 election and asked for the support of voters in Tuesday’s primary.

Clinton then traveled to Bridgeport, Connecticut, the largest city in the state. Speaking at the University of Bridgeport, she talked about continuing the progress of the administration of President Barack Obama. She then covered a number of platform topics including health care, gun control, raising the minimum wage, and reducing the cost of higher education. She believes that America’s best day are still ahead of it saying, “I’m going to do everything I can to make sure America’s best years are ahead of us. Bill Clinton was in Baltimore, Maryland where he attended Sunday morning services at three local churches. At each, he spoke about Hillary’s platform and her plans to move America forward. Today, Bill also attended a fundraiser in Wynnewood, Pennsylvania. The event was hosted by Barbara and Richard Schiffrin.

Other Hillary for America fundraisers were held across the country today. In Bry Mawr, Pennsylvania, a fundraiser was held featuring New Jersey Senator Cory Booker. Meanwhile, in Seattle, Washington, a fundraiser was hosted by John and Nancy Sabol, Daniel James Brown, Pam Eakes, and Jeanne Kohl-Welles. The event featured a conversation with Daniel James Brown, the author of The Boys in the Boat.

Hillary Clinton Campaigns in Connecticut, Rhode Island

On Saturday, Hillary Clinton spent the day in Connecticut and Rhode Island. In New Haven, Connecticut, Clinton held a rountable event that focused on working families. The primary topics of discussion were ways to raise wages, including the minimum wage, promote early childhood education, and reduce the wage gap between men and women. On the topic of equal pay, she said, “Equal pay — we shouldn’t be talking about it in 2016. It is almost embarrassing.” Clinton has returned to holding smaller conversational campaign events as she rallies supporters for next week’s primaries in Connecticut, Rhode Island, Maryland, Pennsylvania, and Delaware. Clinton then rallied supporters at an organizing event in Central Falls, Rhode Island. During her speech, Clinton spoke about a number of platform topics including women’s rights, organized labor, health care, immigration reform, gun control, and climate change. Hillary Clinton Campaigns in Pennsylvania

On Friday, Hillary Clinton spent the day in Pennsylvania leading up to next week’s primary. She attended events and visited with voters across the state. She began in Philadelphia where she spoke with Lilly Ledbetter, then in Jenkinstown, she spoke with a number of voters at a local cafe. During the conversation, she presented a number of her plans to continue economic growth, introduce new jobs, improve health care, and lower the cost of higher education. She then went to the Pittsburgh area where she had dinner at Primanti Brothers restaurant in Market Square where she spoke with supporters about labor unions, the minimum wage, and the struggles of the middle class.

In the evening, Clinton held an organizing event at Dunmore High School in Scranton. She had a populist tone as she referenced a number of local examples and bringing additional jobs to the area. She spoke about a number of her platform points and was largely positive in her outlook, “I believe we can still make it in America. We will knock down the barriers, and we will raise the minimum wage.” Clinton also spoke about her plans to expand mental health care and combat the heroin epidemic in the Northeast. She said, “Two things I hear most about are mental health and addiction. When I shake the hand of a mother, father, brother or sister of a mental health patient, they look at me and tell me they need help.” A video from the event will be posted when/if available.

Clinton was not alone on the campaign trail Friday. Secretary of Labor Tom Perez was in Reading, Pennsylvania where he spoke with a group of Hillary supporters. In Providence, Rhode Island, Planned Parenthood president Cecile Richards spoke with a group of supporters.

Hillary Clinton Campaigns in Southern California

On Saturday, Hillary Clinton took a brief break from campaigning in New York to attend a number of campaign events in California. While Clinton did attend a number of fundraisers, including two that were attended by actor George Clooney and his wife Amal, she also spoke to supporters at the Cox Library on the campus of Southwest College. Clinton gave a speech inside the library where she outlined her plan to raise the federal minimum wage to $12 and applauded California for passing a law that will raise its minimum wage to $15 by 2022. Clinton explained that it is important to understand that while California can afford a higher minimum wage, $12 is a good baseline for the entire country. Clinton told the crowd that she is looking forward to campaigning in California before their June 7 primary. Bill Clinton Campaigns for Hillary in Upstate New York

On Saturday, Bill Clinton campaigned on behalf of Hillary Clinton in upstate New York. He began by attending a Get Out the Vote event in Albany, New York’s capital. During the event, he called Hillary “the best change-maker I’ve ever known” adding that she knows what works and will bring her decades of experience to the White House. Governor Andrew Cuomo and Senator Kirsten Gillibrand also appeared at the event and campaigned for Hillary across the state today. Clinton spoke about a number of his wife’s campaign points before asking for voter support in Tuesday’s primary.

His next campaign event was in Watertown where he spoke about the importance of the 2016 race and the future implications of the November election. He went to speak about a number of Hillary’s platform points including economic growth, something he admitted isn’t happening as quickly for everyone as he would like. The next president will have the power to keep the economy growing, and he said, “I think we are very close to being able to all rise together again if we make the right decision in this campaign.”

In Syracuse, Clinton spoke to a crowd of supporters and stressed Hillary’s record as a New York Senator and how she can take that experience and apply it to the entire country. Clinton said that Hillary visited Syracuse 47 times as Senator and worked with local officials to help the area grow. The economy was the primary focus of his speech and he explained that Hillary will fight for equal pay and higher wages for everyone. He said, “When I was president, we were always in the top 10 percentage of women in the workforce. But it gets harder and harder and harder, when the wages are flat and we’re one of seven countries that doesn’t offer paid leave. When we don’t have an equal pay law and we don’t have affordable child care. Do those three things and we’ll have women flooding back into the workforce in a way that will raise wages for everybody. Raise the minimum wage do those things and we’ll all start growing together again.”

Clinton’s final Get Out the Vote event of the day was in Binghamton where he addressed a crowd of 2,000 supporters. During the event at Binghamton University, he spoke about Hillary’s previous efforts to secure funding for the university and clean energy in the Southern Tier. He also spoke about the rising costs of higher education saying that “every student should be able to graduate from college debt free” and that those paying back student loans should be able to refinance at a lower interest rate. The central argument of his speech was that things in America are still unequal for too many groups. The middle class is not growing, women are not paid equally, and there is still systemic discrimination in many states. Bill Clinton Campaigns in Harlem, Queens

On Sunday, Bill Clinton campaigned on behalf of Hillary Clinton in Harlem and Queens. He began in Harlem this morning where he attended Sunday services at three churches. The three churches that he spoke at were: Abyssinian Baptist Church, Antioch Baptist Church, and Mount Neboh Baptist Church. At each church, Bill was introduced by Rep. Charles Rangel, and she spoke about Hillary’s plans to increase minimum wage and opportunities for everyone across the country.

Bill then spoke at an organizing events at the New York Hall of Science in Queens and the John John Jay College in New York City. At both events, he spoke about Hillary’s plans to increase incomes and continue building on the economy so everyone can prosper. He also spoke about criminal justice reform and referenced the death of Eric Garner. Garner was selling cigarettes in New York City and died when he was put in a choke hold by police. Bill said, “I say that because they may not have intended to kill that man—they violated procedural rules with a chokehold with a very heavy guy. People do stuff like that when they’re scared, when they’re alienated, when they feel like there’s this vast divide—and we have to get rid of that.” Videos from today’s events will be added when/if available.

A number of fundraisers were held today on behalf of Hillary for America. In Washington, DC, Campaign Chair John Podesta attended an event that included Senior Policy Advisor Maya Harris. The event was hosted by Maddy Beckwith, Ezekiel Emanuel, Terry Lierman, Tony Podesta, Chris Putala, and Oscar Ramirez. A fundraiser was also held in Villanova, Pennsylvania. The event included a conversation with Valerie Plame and was hosted by Stella M. Tsai and Jannie K. Lau. The final event was a virtual conversation with Foreign Policy Advisor Laura Rosenberger for American citizens living in São Paulo, Brazil.

Hillary Clinton Interviewed on CNN’s State of the Union

On Sunday morning, an interview between CNN’s Jake Tapper and Hillary Clinton was aired during an episode of State of the Union. Clinton was asked about a number of topics including the upcoming New York primary, comments that her husband, Bill Clinton, made earlier in the week, and her battle with Senator Bernie Sanders. Clinton refused to say anything negative about Sanders saying that she would rather have him in the White House than Republicans Donald Trump or Ted Cruz.

She also defended her plan to introduce a $12 federal minimum wage despite New York and California recently introducing $15 minimum wage laws. Clinton said, “There are a lot of places that are not well off around the country they’re required to have $7.25 wage to go from that to $12 is big leap. Now I want to encourage every place that can go to $15 the New York cities, Los Angeles, Seattle and California raised its minimum wage, but it also took into account different geographic areas with different economic circumstances.” A video of the full interview is below.
