Final Review: Hillary Clinton’s Comprehensive Platform

Before the majority of Americans head to the polls on Tuesday, the campaign has heated up in the battle between Hillary Clinton and Republican Donald Trump. Clinton has outlined a comprehensive platform while what has been offered by Trump little substance and foundation. Clinton’s platform is built on a career of public service and an understanding of domestic and foreign policies. While everyone may not agree with all of platform points, taken as a whole it is clear that she has put together a solid plan to more the country forward and ensure that everyone has an opportunity to live up to their full potential.

When Clinton has introduced a major platform topic, we add it to the Platform category of the website. Looking through Clinton’s speeches and policy proposals, a clear plan emerges. Hillary Clinton Campaigns in Florida One Week Before Election

One week out from the election, Hillary Clinton made her case to voters in Florida today. Her first two events were in Dade City and Sanford where she spoke about a number of platform points including her plans to create jobs, make college more affordable, and ensure equal pay for women. But she went after Donald Trump with fervor. Clinton attacked Trump for his comments about Senator John McCain and our military, women, immigrants, and the list goes on. She focused on Trump’s comments about in women in particular as she appeared with former Miss Universe Alicia Machado in Dade City. “If we look at what Trump has been doing for 30 years, he sure has spent a lot of time demeaning and degrading women. He calls women ugly. Disgusting. Calls women pigs. Rates bodies on a scale of 1 to 10,” she said. Clinton concluded each event asking everyone to vote next Tuesday or to take advantage of early voting. Watch videos of Clinton’s events below.

Clinton wrapped up the day at an event in Fort Lauderdale. Clinton spoke to an enthusiastic crowd about her vision for America. A country that is inclusive and offers opportunities for everyone and not just a select few. She said, “It is time for us to say no, we are not going backward. We are going forward. How do we do that? For the next seven days focus on what is important. Don’t get distracted. Don’t get diverted.” Clinton also had strong criticisms of Trump saying, “Donald Trump has proven himself temperamentally unfit and unqualified to be president of the United States. He has proven himself unfit. And what he is doing with his conspiracy theories, with his insulting and with his demeaning and degrading millions of Americans proves he should not be allowed anywhere near the White House.” She concluded by asking everyone to take advantage of early voting. Bill Clinton Encourages Early Voting in Florida

Bill Clinton returned to Florida on Tuesday where he campaigned for Hillary Clinton at three events. His first event was in Florida City where he told a crowd of supporters that Hillary Clinton is, by far, the best candidate for president and that countless military and national security experts agree. “They know what the real security issue is. The real security issue is having somebody who will keep you safe and strong while we can grow our way together,” he said. Bill focused on Hillary’s plans to ensure that Americans are able to prosper together, and he outlined her plans to create jobs, grow the economy, and make college more affordable. He concluded by asking everyone to vote on election day or to vote early. A video of Bill’s speech is below.

Bill then traveled to Immokalee where he was greeted by supporters. Bill is the first former president to every visit the town. He spoke about the stark differences between Hillary and her opponent, Republican Donald Trump, saying that her plans focus on everyday people, and not those at the top. Bill touted Hillary’s plans to ensure college is affordable for everyone, improve the Affordable Care Act, and create jobs by investing in infrastructure, manufacturing, and clean energy. Again, Bill concluded stressing the importance of voting saying, “The most important thing you can do is to vote and take your friends to vote. Do it today tomorrow and every day through Election Day. If enough people who are for Hillary turn out, she’ll win Florida, and she’ll be the next president.” A video from the event is below.

Bill’s final stop of the day was in St. Petersburg where he focused on Hillary’s platform points and the divisive nature of Trump’s campaign. Bill outlined a number of Hillary’s key policies including her plans to create jobs and ensure an equal opportunity for every American to succeed. He then contrasted that vision with Trump’s saying that the racist undertones of Trump’s campaign are becoming more obvious. “As a 70-year-old Southerner, I know what will make America great again,” Clinton said implying that Trump will make it difficult for anyone who is not white. Bill concluded his speech by encouraging everyone to vote saying, “If people who are for Hillary, vote for Hillary, she’ll win Florida and be our next president.” Watch a video of the rally below.

The Choice is Clear: Trump is Unfit to be President and Commander-In-Chief

Americans deserve a president who’s ready on Day One to keep us safe. As a former Secretary of State and senator, Hillary Clinton brings vast experience to the Oval Office, having dealt with the key issues facing Americans around the world for decades. Traveling nearly a million miles as America’s top diplomat, Hillary has handled issues ranging from nuclear proliferation to military readiness, from women’s rights  to climate change, and is ready to lead from day one.

Donald Trump, on the other hand, has proven himself again and again to be temperamentally unfit and totally unqualified to be President and Commander-in-Chief.

Beyond his lack of understanding of foreign policy and unwillingness to learn, Donald Trump is a loose cannon with dangerous views on major global issues. Trump would encourage the spread of nuclear weapons around the world, has insulted our allies and praised several authoritarian dictators.  He even encouraged a foreign government to hack Americans, and since then has refused to acknowledge the U.S. Intelligence community’s conclusion that the Russian government has done just that.

Americans deserve a president who understands the challenging world in which we live, not one who is too erratic and uninformed to have control of nuclear weapons.

Throughout his career, and throughout this campaign, on subject after subject, Trump has proven he is unfit to be commander-in-chief. As we begin the final week of the presidential campaign, here is a look back at Trump’s dangerous record on matters of defense and foreign policy:

NUCLEAR WEAPONS

On nuclear weapons, Donald Trump has displayed a reckless disregard for fact and fails to understand the dangers of nuclear proliferation. Simply put, he doesn’t have the temperament to be trusted with the nuclear codes.

• Trump has said he “loves war.”
• Trump has embraced a reckless “shoot first” foreign policy.
• Trump reportedly wondered why we can’t use nuclear weapons, if we have them.
• Trump said he wanted to be “unpredictable” with nuclear weapons.
• Trump exhibited ignorance on whether he would adopt a “no first use” doctrine.
• Trump would allow countries like Japan, South Korea and Saudi Arabia to acquire nuclear weapons.
• Trump appeared to have no idea what the nuclear triad
• On the prospect of nuclear war in Asia, Trump said, “good luck, enjoy yourself folks.”
• Trump’s rhetoric pushed dozens former nuclear launch officers to sign a letter saying Trump “should not have his finger on the button.”

U.S. MILITARY AND VETERANS

Trump has repeatedly insulted our military, our veterans and their families. He has been disrespecting our veterans for decades, continually proving he’s unqualified and temperamentally unfit to be commander-in-chief.

• Trump calls our military “a disaster.”
• Trump said “our military can’t beat ISIS.”
• Trump says he watches “the shows” for military advice.
• Trump has said he would consult himself on foreign policy because he has “a very good brain.”
• Trump said, “I know more about ISIS than the generals do. Believe me.”
• Trump said the generals have been “reduced to rubble.”
• Trump said John McCain was “not a war hero” because he was captured.
• Trump suggested veterans experiencing PTSD aren’t “strong.”
• Trump repeatedly criticized a Gold Star family.
• Trump’s businesses have been accused of firing employees for their military service.
• Trump lied over and over again about donating to veterans charities.
• Trump scammed veterans through his sham Trump University.
• Trump attempted to kick disabled veterans off of Fifth Avenue over two decades, calling the situation “deplorable.”

U.S. INTELLIGENCE

Trump has disparaged the U.S. intelligence community – not only rejecting their conclusions, but questioning their motives.

• When asked whether he trusts intelligence, Trump said “not so much.”
• Trump invited a foreign government to commit cyber espionage in the U.S.
• Trump maintains that we don’t know if Russia is behind recent hacks, despite being personally briefed by Republican Representative Michael McCaul, Chairman of the House Committee on Homeland Security.
• Trump called the U.S. intelligence community’s conclusion that Russia was behind that hack was “public relations, frankly” and repeatedly denied their conclusion.
• Trump has been accused by a former acting CIA director of being “an unwitting agent of Putin.”

AMERICA’S ALLIES

For decades, America has held strong alliances across the world – including those with NATO countries. NATO has stood with the United States, for example, invoking Article 5 after 9/11 and collaborating to fight the war on terror today. But on the campaign trail, Donald Trump has outlined plans to cut off America’s allies.

• Trump said he would be fine if NATO broke up.
• Trump accused NATO countries of ripping off the United States, saying “either they have to pay up… or they have to get out. And if it breaks up NATO, it breaks up NATO.”
• Trump said NATO “may be obsolete” and “doesn’t really help us.”
• Trump said he might not defend NATO allies against Russian aggression.
• Trump has extended his threats past NATO to countries like Japan and South Korea.

FOREIGN DICTATORS

Donald Trump seems to have an admiration for dictators from across the world. From Vladimir Putin to Saddam Hussein and beyond, Trump has repeatedly complimented foreign leaders known for their records of oppression and abuse..

• Trump said North Korea’s Kim Jong-Un deserves “credit” for taking out his rivals and has “got to be pretty smart.”
• Trump gave Saddam Hussein unduecredit, saying “he did one thing well, he killed terrorists.”
• Trump believes that, during the Tiananmen Square massacre, the Chinese government showed “strength.”
• Trump thinks Vladimir Putin is a better leader than President Obama, “saying in terms of leadership, he’s getting an A and our president is not doing so well.” (But of course, his praise for Putin doesn’t stop there.)

FOREIGN BUSINESS ENTANGLEMENTS

Trump’s extensive foreign dealings would present significant conflicts of interest and endanger our national security. Trump refuses to disclose the full extent of his foreign business entanglements – but without knowing the details of them, how will Americans know whose interests Trump is putting first? What we do know is concerning.

• Trump has extensive global financial dealings.
• Trump admitted that if his business interests were threatened by another country’s government, he would retaliate with the power of the US government.
• Trump has a record of business dealings with foreign governments – including Iran and China that we don’t know the extent of.
• Trump has also had numerous foreign business partners we don’t know much about – including one that is allegedly linked to an international money laundering network.
• Trump is in debt to foreign institutions for hundreds of millions of dollars.
• Trump’s foreign entanglements would pose unprecedented challenges for U.S. foreign policy and national security.

ISIS

Despite Trump’s claims that he has a “secret” plan to defeat ISIS, he has no real plan at all. And his rhetoric is dangerously playing into terrorists’ hands.

• Trump would “ask [his] generals” – the very same generals he believes he knows more than – for a plan to defeat ISIS, since he doesn’t currently have any plan at all.
• Trump would continue to promote Russia’s brutal bombing campaign in Syria that is targeting civilians instead of ISIS.
• Trump has suggested he would allow Syria to become a “free zone for ISIS.”
• Trump would ban Muslims from entering the U.S., a policy that feeds radical jihadist propaganda.
• Trump would engage in torture in the fight against ISIS and kill the families of terrorists.

IRAN

Donald Trump’s approach to Iran is devoid of any substance. He has prefered to denigrate American leaders and spew lies when it comes to Iran — though he was willing to deal with Iran when it made him money.

• Trump has repeatedly lied about the Iran deal.
• Trump has also repeatedly lied about Iran’s release of Americans.
• Trump has peddled falsehoods about Iran’s ability to pursue a nuclear weapon.
• Trump has been exposed as a lessor to Iranian bank linked to terrorism.

NORTH KOREA

Trump doesn’t understand the threat North Korea poses. On the campaign trail, Trump has taken positions that would endanger the security of the  United States and our allies and embolden North Korea.

• Trump would meet with Kim Jong-Un, despite his continued violations of  international obligations to abandon his nuclear and missile programs.
• Trump would consider cutting off defense support to Japan and South Korea.
• Trump would open to door to nuclear proliferation in the region. When asked whether it’s “fine” for Japan and South Korea to get nuclear weapons, Trump said, “Can I be honest with you? It’s going to happen anyway.”
• Trump joked about the prospect of nuclear war between Japan and North Korea, saying “good luck, enjoy yourself folks.”

RUSSIA

While Clinton has stood up to Russia, Trump panders to Putin. He has voiced support for policies and positions that align exactly with the Kremlin’s interests.

• Trump backed Brexit and celebrated the result of the vote.
• Trump casually predicts the dissolution of the EU.
• Trump calls NATO obsolete, says he wouldn’t mind leaving it and threatens to shirk our responsibility to defend our NATO allies unless they pay up.
• Trump criticized the U.S. for resisting Putin’s invasion of Ukraine.
• Ahead of the GOP convention, Trump’s campaign bucked fellow Republicans by maneuvering to ensure the party platform no longer calls for arming the Ukrainians, and then lied about it.
• Trump has floated permanently ceding Crimea to Russia as well as lifting sanctions, after he seemingly had no idea Russia invaded Crimea two years ago.
• Trump has even encouraged Russian espionage to interfere in our election on his behalf, and denied the Kremlin’s evident involvement in hacks on U.S. political entities, a strategy Putin has deployed across Europe to try to install candidates reminiscent of Trump.
• Trump announced he would meet with Putin prior to the start of his administration, if elected president.

SYRIA

To date, Donald Trump has not laid out any real plans with respect to Syria or offered any indication that he takes the conflict and humanitarian disaster seriously.

• Trump suggested Syria should be a “free zone for ISIS.”
• Trump raised the possibility of sending 20,000 – 30,000 U.S. ground troops to Syria and Iraq.
• Trump praised and encouraged Russia’s brutal bombing campaign in Syria, despite the climbing total civilian casualties and attacks on U.S.-backed forces.

Trump peddled lies about Syrian refugees.

Kaine Campaigns in North Carolina, Holton in Nebraska

On Monday, Tim Kaine campaigned in North Carolina where he began the day at an event in Jacksonville. During his speech, Kaine outlined a number of Hillary Clinton’s key platform points including her plans to create jobs and continue the economic growth started by the administration of President Barack Obama. He said that the goal is to build an economy that works for everyone, and not just those at the top. Kaine also spoke about Donald Trump and attacked Trump for his disrespect for the military. As the father of a Marine, Kaine said, “We need someone who has known about (the military) in the past and know what we look for in the future, even know what the military stands for other than fighting.” Kaine wrapped up the event by asking everyone to vote and to take advantage of the state’s early voting adding, “You are not the kind of people to stand by. We’re going to go out on November 8 and make history and do something that’s never been done.” A video from the event is below.

In Sanford, Kaine continued to focus on the economy and Clinton’s plans to create jobs by investing in infrastructure, manufacturing, clean energy, education and training, and helping small businesses. Kaine urged everyone to not become complacent by current polls indicating that the gap that favored Clinton in the polls is closing, something he said they knew would happen. “I’m the underdog until they call me the winner,” he said asking everyone to vote on November 8th or to take advantage of early voting. HFA Statement On Trump’s Latest Insult To U.S. Military

Wednesday, Lt. Gen. John Castellaw released the following statement in response to Trump’s comment that he could ‘sit down and teach a couple things’ to former Army War College dean and retired Army Colonel, Jeff McCausland:

“Donald Trump’s disrespect for our military knows no bounds. This week, as brave American troops embarked on a crucial mission supporting anti-ISIS forces in Iraq, Trump was already declaring defeat. He called our leaders stupid for not following his uninformed advice. And now he’s personally insulting a military expert and retired Army Colonel who served for 30 years for knocking his ‘plan.’”

“A complex operation to take a major city – with hundreds of thousands of civilians, untold traps and IEDs, and the possibility of street-to-street fighting – requires careful planning and methodical execution, not a fly-by-night bum’s rush.”

“But sadly, none of this is surprising coming from Donald Trump. Over the course of this campaign, he has claimed to know more about military operations than our generals do. He has mocked U.S. prisoners of war. He has insulted Gold Star families. He has joked about how he always wanted a Purple Heart. He has never apologized for any of it. He calls our military a ‘disaster’ and then turns around and asks the country to make him our Commander-in-Chief. It’s a disgrace, and we can never let him assume that sacred role.”

Lt. Gen. John Castellaw, USMC (ret) led Marines around the world for 36 years while flying more than two dozen different types of aircraft.  Castellaw served with the UN during the Siege of Sarajevo, commanded the American force in the multi-national security and stability operation in East Timor, and as the chief of staff for the U.S. Central Command at the height of the war in Iraq.

Hillary Clinton Endorsed by Newport News Paper

Hillary Clinton received the endorsement of the Daily Press, a newspaper based in Newport New, Virginia. The paper’s editorial board cities Clinton’s experience and temperament in their decision despite her political drawbacks. The board says of the presidency, “Our president sets the tone for foreign and domestic policy, nominates judges to our highest court to steer our legal standards, selects members of the Federal Reserve Board who will have far-reaching effects on our economy and serves as commander-in-chief of our military. The person we choose as our president is also a reflection of how we see ourselves as a nation, the public face we show the rest of the world.” And they concluded Hillary Clinton is the best choice to fulfill that duty.

Military Leaders, Experts Agree: Trump is Wrong on Mosul

This week, Donald is adding to his long history of trashing the U.S. military and disrespecting veterans and military families. Trump has been criticizing the Iraqi-led military operation in Mosul, despite the fact that U.S. military experts have called him out for his reckless and disrespectful claims.

On Sunday, Trump tweeted “The attack on Mosul is turning out to be a total disaster. We gave them months of notice. U.S. is looking so dumb.” At his rally in Florida, Trump went on to say, “Our leadership is stupid. These are stupid people.” And on Monday, he gave an interview in which he said, “You see how badly that fight is going.”

Not only are many of Trump’s comments flat-out wrong, he demonstrates a profound lack of understanding of military strategy. Hillary Clinton addressed his comments yesterday in New Hampshire saying, “He’s proving to the world what it means to have an unqualified commander-in-chief. It’s not only wrong, it’s dangerous.”

Jeff McCausland, retired Army colonel and former dean at the Army War College in Carlisle, PA: “What this shows is Trump doesn’t know a damn thing about military strategy.”

Robert Gates, former defense secretary: “‘When you look at the other things he’s said about the military, about how the senior officers are a disaster and so on and so forth, my guess is most folks on active duty don’t take seriously what he has to say,’ said Robert Gates, who served as defense secretary for both Bush and Obama.”

Mark Kimmitt, retired one-star Army general and former Pentagon official: “‘Strategic surprise is rarely accomplished, but tactical surprise — the how and where of low-level attacks — is kept secret,’ said Mark Kimmitt, a retired one-star Army general and former senior Pentagon official. ‘Mr. Trump does not seem to understand this critical distinction between strategy and tactics.’”

Kohn, a professor emeritus at the University of North Carolina: “I don’t think it really demonstrates any understanding of warfare.”

George Little, former CIA and Pentagon senior official: “Shameful that @realDonaldTrump has declared the battle for Mosul a failure before it’s really even begun. Another reason #ImWithHer.”

Peter Mansoor, retired Army colonel: “Peter Mansoor, a retired Army colonel who aided Petraeus in Iraq, said political rhetoric such as Trump’s can affect the morale of those ‘serving in uniform at the sharp end of the spear.’”

Robert Scales, retired Army major general and former commandant of the Army War College: “Robert Scales, a retired Army major general and former commandant of the Army War College, said the unfolding Mosul campaign is a course in Military Operations 101 that American and Iraqi armies have followed for years. A large allied force approaches the objective (Mosul, in this case) from multiple directions, establishes a loose cordon around the city, and peels away the outlying towns and villages, all the while opening an escape route for refugees and people who do not want to fight, General Scales said.”

• “‘There are over a million innocents in the city so you want to give them an opportunity to take cover or to leave,’ said General Scales… Once the advancing force reaches the most hardened fighters, often concentrated in a city center, “You pound the bejesus out of them with artillery and precision-guided bombs until they surrender or die,” General Scales said. ‘There’s absolutely no surprise in all this.’”

The notion of a ‘sneak attack’ makes no sense here — this is a massive operation, and Iraqi and other coalition forces have spent months ‘shaping the battlefield’ in preparation for it.’”

Matthew Spence, former defense official: “”The language he uses and the lack of meaningful critique — it’s unpresidential and deeply unhelpful for American foreign policy.”

And when it comes to the military, Trump’s bluster doesn’t stop with Mosul. Yesterday, in a local interview, Trump falsely suggested that he had been “endorsed largely, at least conceptually, by the military.”

NBC News: Trump Cites Police, Military, ICE Endorsements That Didn’t Happen: “On Monday, he told News4Jax that the United States military ‘conceptually’ endorsed him and that ‘virtually every police department’ in the country backed his bid for the presidency. During last week’s third debate, Trump said his hardline stance on immigration and pledge to build a border wall had earned him an endorsement from Immigration and Customs Enforcement. But none of that is true.”

Business Insider: “Trump has indeed been endorsed by several dozen retired generals and admirals, but many of the most well-known military figures alive today — including dozens from within the Republican Party itself — have denounced Trump in strong terms. And Trump has said the US military is a ‘disaster.’”

Anne Holton and Jill Biden Campaign for Hillary in North Carolina

On Saturday, the current Second Lady of the United States Jill Biden campaigned with the woman hoping to soon hold that title, Anne Holton. The pair attended events in North Carolina, and they began their day in Fayetteville. They spoke at Fayetteville Technical Community College about the importance of the election and, how as military moms, they both trust Hillary Clinton over Donald Trump. “I trust Hillary Clinton. She understands the importance of using our military power when it is needed – but only when it’s needed,” Holton said.

While in Fayeteville, they also attended a canvass kick-off event before heading to an early voting rally in Jacksonville. The two spoke about similar topics at each event and highlighted a number of Clinton’s key platform points. Their primary message, however, was about the importance of voting and ensuring that everyone has their say in this election. Speaking about the access to early voting in North Carolina, Holton said, “You have strong early voting laws in this state. You had to fight to get it. You can’t take them for granted.” Videos from today’s events will be posted when/if available.

Vice President Biden Campaigns in New Hampshire

In Nashua, New Hampshire, Vice President Joe Biden spoke to supporters about electing Democrats to office up and down the ballot on November 8th. While he was in the state to campaign for Hillary Clinton, he also appeared with Senator Jeanne Shaheen and Democratic Senate candidate Maggie Hassan. Biden spoke about the importance of voting in the election on November 8th and blasted Donald Trump for his refusal to say he’d accept the outcome of the election. Biden said, “No democratic process can be sustained without a sense of trust. He’s questioning not the legitimacy of our elections, (but) the legitimacy of our democracy.” Biden also criticized Trump for his comments about the military and women saying that Trump does not represent American values. He spoke about a number of Clinton’s platform points saying that she will protect the middle class Watch a video of Biden’s speech below.
