Clinton Speaks at Planned Parenthood Gala

Hillary Clinton spoke at the Planned Parenthood 100th Anniversary Gala in New York City on Tuesday night. During her speech, Clinton argued that women’s health care is important and warned that the Donald Trump administration and Republican administrations across the country are taking away women’s health care by closing Planned Parenthood clinics and cutting funding. She said, “As we speak, politicians in Washington are still doing everything they can to roll back the rights and progress we’ve fought so hard for over the last century.” Clinton acknowledged the controversy surrounding Planned Parenthood and abortion rights, and she said that everyone has a right to their personal feelings, but the government should not take away anyone’s right to control their body. “Let us respect people’s convictions. But never back down from our commitment to defend the ability of every woman to make these deeply personal decisions for herself. The Choice is Clear: Hillary Will Fight For Women While Trump Belittles and Bullies Them

Hillary Clinton has been breaking new  ground and fighting for women her entire career. Before she made history becoming the first female nominee of a major party for president, Hillary led the U.S delegation to the U.N Fourth World Conference on Women in Beijing, where she proclaimed that “women’s rights are human rights.” As a senator from New York, she championed the Paycheck Fairness Act to help close the pay gap between women and men.

As President, Hillary will build on her record of fighting for women because although there has been tremendous strides when it comes to expanding opportunities for women there’s still much more work to be done. Donald Trump, however, has a very different record — he has spent his life, and this campaign, demeaning women.

Throughout this campaign, we’ve seen many examples of Trump’s alarming words and deeds towards women like his revolting comments on a bus caught on tape, his repeated behavior insulting and degrading women who stood up to him, his bragging about walking in on nude pageant contestants, some of whom were apparently under aged, his jokes objectifying women, and more.

It’s clear Trump’s dangerous proposals would take us backwards.  Over the course of the campaign, we’ve watched Trump dismiss women in the workplace and say that women who choose to have abortions should be “punished.”

Trump’s policies on women and dangerous rhetoric  have demonstrated he is unfit to be President of the United States. With one week left of the presidential campaign, here is a recap of  Trump’s history of belittling and bullying women:

MISOGYNISTIC AND OFFENSIVE RHETORIC

Trump has talked disparagingly about women — calling them pigs and rating their bodies on a 1 to 10 scale.  From his revolting nicknames to his lewd comments, Trump’s rhetoric about women is inexcusable.

• Trump: referred to a pageant contestant as “Miss Piggy” and “Miss Housekeeping,” and then doubled down years later saying “she gained a massive amount of weight.”
• Trump on Carly Fiorina: “Look at that face! … Would anyone vote for that? Can you imagine that, the face of our next president?!”
• Trump: “A person who is flat-chested is very hard to be a 10,” he told Howard Stern.
• Trump: “But whenever she sees me, she kisses my ass. She’s disgusting.”
• Trump: “There’s a lot of women out there that demand that the husband act like the wife.”
• Trump: “And when you’re a star, they let you do it. You can do anything.”
• Trump: “[I]t doesn’t really matter what [the media] write as long as you’ve got a young and beautiful piece of ass
• Trump: It is “rare” that women are both “very beautiful” and have high IQs
• Trump: “Did you see that woman? She had an amazing body, but a schoolmarm’s face”
• Trump on women:  “You have to treat ‘em like shit.’”
• Trump on Hillary Clinton: “Do you think she looks presidential? I don’t think so”

WRONG ON WOMEN IN THE WORKPLACE

Donald Trump has a long history of demeaning women in the workplace and has said that “putting a wife to work is a very dangerous thing” – so it’s no surprise that he has a bad record when it comes to hiring women and supporting equal pay.

• Trump’s campaign staff was 75 percent men.
• Trump’s campaign paid women less than men.
• When Trump was asked why his campaign paid women less than men, he replied that in his business salaries were based on “talent.”
• Trump’s public companies have had very few women in senior roles: only 6 of 59 of Trump’s casino executives were women.
• Trump to a young women asking about equal pay: “You’re going to make the same if you do as good a job”
• Trump on what employing mothers can mean for a business: “She’s not giving one hundred percent, she’s giving me eighty-four percent”
• Trump said pregnancy was an “inconvenience” for employers
• Trump called a working mother “disgusting” for requesting a break to go pump breast milk
• Trump claimed to offer childcare for his employees, but it was actually a program for resort guests

WRONG ON REPRODUCTIVE FREEDOM

Donald Trump opposes basic reproductive rights and even said he believes women should be subject to “punishment” for having an abortion.

• Trump on whether women should be punished for having abortions: “There has to be some form of punishment”
• Trump would appoint Supreme Court justices who would overturn Roe v. Wade “automatically” if he’s elected
• Trump called for shutting down the government to defund Planned Parenthood
• Trump called requiring contraceptive coverage in the Affordable Care Act “very bad.”

MINIMIZING PROBLEM OF SEXUAL HARASSMENT

Trump’s preferred way of talking about women appears to extend into the Trump Organization as well, spurring a raft of discrimination and harassment lawsuits against Trump and his companies.

• At least 20 lawsuits accused Trump and his companies of discriminating against women, ignoring sexual harassment or participating in harassment
• Two former Trump employees allege they were fired after complaining about harassment at work
• One former Trump employee says she was fired for complainingabout discrimination after she became pregnant
• Trump suggested women who were sexually harassed should find another job
• On sexual assault in the military, Trump said “what did these geniuses expect when they put men and women together”

UNDER FIRE FOR SEXUAL MISCONDUCT

Trump has bragged about sexually assaulting women and suggests that his determination of whether or not a woman is worth assaulting is based on their attractiveness.

• Trump bragged about sexually assaulting women
• Trump claimed to be the victim but multiple women say Trump’s words match his behavior
• Twelve women have publicly accused Trump of sexual assault
• Trump said the sexual assault described on tape was just “locker room talk“
• Trump lashed out at women accusing him of sexual assault and said his accusers were not attractive enough to assault
• Trump said his accusers were “sick” and coming forward for fame or money
• Trump promised to sue his accusers

Kaine Pens Op-Ed on Importance of Religious Mission Service

Tim Kaine published an op-ed in the Deseret News on the importance of religious mission work in America. In his essay, Kaine references his own missionary work as a Roman Catholic and talks about other religious organizations with strong missionary ties around the world. Kaine reflects on the lessons he learned working in Honduras saying, “Today, I recognize selfless leadership in all corners of our nation, by people in all kinds of clothing and of all skin colors, religions and incomes. Tim Kaine, Anne Holton Campaign for Hillary

Tim Kaine attended three campaign events on Wednesday. The first two events were in Ohio, and he began by speaking at a canvass kick-off event in Upper Arlington. Kaine spoke about the importance of Ohio in this election and urged supporters and volunteers to canvass for Hillary Clinton. “Donald Trump cannot be president without Ohio. That means you’ve got this election right in the palm of your hands, Ohio,” he said. Kaine wrapped up by urging everyone to vote on November 8th. A video form the event is below.

Kaine then traveled to Springfield where he spoke to a crowd of supporters about the importance of 2016 election and Clinton’s plans to ensure that everyone has an equal opportunity to prosper in America. As in Upper Arlington, he spoke about the importance of Ohio and urged voters to reject the hateful rhetoric spread by the Trump campaign. Kaine also went after Trump for comments he made about women saying, “To just say this is the way men are, this is the real Donald Trump. But, this isn’t real men, folks.” A video from the Springfield event is below.

Kaine’s final event of the day was in Asheville, North Carolina where he spoke to supporters on the campus of the University of North Carolina-Asheville. Kaine attacked Trump for spreading the idea that the American democracy is rigged. Now (Trump) is attacking American democracy itself. Donald Trump is now perpertrating the lie that, ‘Oh the election is all set against me.’ We know what’s going on: He’s losing. Donald Trump has never been willing to take responsibility for anything so it’s not like he’s going to stand up and say, ‘Well, I lost. I guess must have run a divisive campaign.’ … If he loses, it’s going to be somebody else’s fault and so he’s he’s going around saying the election’s set against him.” Watch a video of the rally below.

Anne Holton, Kaine’s wife, was in Iowa where she held events in four cities. Her first event was in Des Moines where she held a discussion with local educators and parents about bullying in schools. Holton then spoke at early voting events in Ottumwa and Burlington. At each event, she encouraged everyone to get out and vote on, or before, election day. Holton’s final Iowa event was in Davenport where she attended a debate watch party with a group of supporters. Full coverage from today’s Iowa events will be posted when/if available.

Hillary Clinton Statement on Alleged Plot Against Somali Community

Following news that the FBI had charged three Kansas men for plotting to use a weapon of mass destruction against an apartment complex in Garden City, Kansas, that is home to many Somali immigrants, Hillary Clinton issues the following statement:

“I applaud law enforcement for detecting and disrupting a highly disturbing terror plot in Kansas, in which men were allegedly planning an elaborate attack directed at Muslim Americans, including directing four car bombs at an apartment complex housing more than 100 men, women, and children. This plot is an affront to all Americans. We all must stand firm in fighting terror and rejecting hateful and divisive rhetoric–and we must do it together. According to the FBI, their eight-month investigation uncovered ‘a hidden culture of hatred and violence.’ We should all be grateful to law enforcement for preventing this plot from being carried out, and as President, I will work with law enforcement at all levels and with our communities to make sure we have the tools we need to prevent both domestic and international terrorist threats.”

Michelle Obama Campaigns for Hillary in New Hampshire

First Lady Michelle Obama was on the campaign trail today in Manchester, New Hampshire. Obama delivered a powerful speech denouncing Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump’s comments about women and allegations of sexual assault against him. “We have a candidate for president of the United States who over the course of his lifetime, over the course of this campaign, has said things about women that are shocking, so demeaning. I simply will not repeat anything here today. Last week, we actually saw this candidate bragging about sexually assaulting women. I can’t believe I’m saying that, a candidate for president of the United States bragged about sexually assaulting women.”

Obama called Trump’s language hurtful and disrespectful to both women and men adding, “I can tell you the men in my life do not talk about women like this. I know my family is not unusual. They are loving fathers who are sickened by the thought of their daughters being exposed to this kind of vicious language about women.” She said that they way we as a society treat each other is important and she recalled telling a group of young women at the White House a few days ago saying, “I told them they deserve to be treated with dignity and respect. I wanted them to understand that the measure of any society is how it treats women and girls.” A video of Obama’s powerful speech is below.

Tim Kaine, Chelsea Clinton Campaign for Hillary

On Monday, Tim Kaine campaigned for Hillary Clinton in Denver, Colorado. During the event, Kaine outlined a number of Hillary’s platform points and spoke about her strong performance at last night’s debate. Kaine also spoke about Republican Donald Trump’s 2005 vulgar comments about women saying that men should be insulted by them as well. He said that Trump “cannot look at a woman and see an equal” and real men do not talk about women in a derogatory way. The event also featured a performance by musician Dave Matthews. Chelsea Clinton, meanwhile, campaigned in Minnesota and Wisconsin. She began her day in Rochester, Minnesota where she spoke to local residents about her mother’s policies and why she is the best candidate for the job. She then spoke about the importance of voting in the upcoming election. Chelsea urged everyone to register to vote and to turn out on November 8th saying that everyone has a vested interest in the election. “I didn’t know I could care anymore about politics until I was blessed to become a parent and found that I could, found everything I cared about before just has a sharper intensity,” she said. Chelsea then traveled to Racine, Wisconsin where she addressed a group of local residents at the Living Light Community Center. Chelsea spoke about a number of Hillary’s major platform points such as raising the minimum wage, passing comprehensive immigration reform, ensuring women receive equal pay, and supporting family medical leave. Chelsea also contrasted Hillary’s plans from those of Trump saying that Hillary has the background and bipartisan connections in Congress to get the job done. “If we look at areas where we already have a broad-base and bipartisan support, my mother has a record of building things together and getting things done. And she hopes that she will have the opportunity to demonstrate that action-oriented positive leadership as president,” she explained. A video from the Racine event is below.

In Chicago, Illinois, a fundraiser was held on behalf of Hillary for America. The event featured a conversation with former Secretary of State Madeleine Albright and Rick Bayless.

HFA Statement on Trump’s Comments Related to Central Park Jogger Case

After Donald Trump doubled down his view that the five men convicted and later exonerated on DNA evidence in the Central Park Jogger case are still guilty, Hillary for America Senior Policy Advisor Maya Harris released the following statement:

“The facts here are clear: These men were exonerated. Another man has admitted to committing the crime, as proven by DNA evidence. Trump rushed to judgment on the case, has refused to admit he is wrong and continues to peddle yet another racist lie, a pattern for him and a clear reason why he is unfit to be president.”

Hillary Clinton Statement on Endorsement by Association of Professional Flight Attendants

Hillary Clinton has received the endorsement of the Association of Professional Flight Attendants. In a press release, APFA president Bob Ross said, “I don’t think there is any question that she stands on the side of working families across this country, including those of over 26,000 American Airlines Flight Attendants.” Clinton responded to the endorsement with the following statement:

“Since 1977, the Association of Professional Flight Attendants has represented nearly 25,000 flight attendants of American Airlines. Through its relentless advocacy and activism, APFA has fought to create better and fairer working conditions both on the ground and in the skies. And I’m proud to have earned their endorsement.

APFA understands what’s at stake in this election. Donald Trump supports a tax system rigged for the rich and powerful. And we just learned he’s likely been exploiting that system to avoid paying taxes for years – even though he’s argued that wages for hardworking Americans are ‘too high.’  

Trump personally hired a union-busting firm to keep workers at his Las Vegas hotel from organizing. He even opposes policies that would make it easier for Americans to balance work and family, like guaranteeing paid leave for all families. And he has said that women can earn the same as men only if they ‘do as good a job.’

In a Clinton-Kaine Administration, working families will always have a champion in the White House. We’ll reject bad trade deals like the Trans-Pacific Partnership, stand up to attacks on workers, and fight back against to discriminatory policies. Clinton Shares Stories on “Humans of New York”

Hillary Clinton shared two stories on the photography site Humans of New York. Clinton shared stories and explained to photographer Brandon Stanton why she believes she comes across to many people as cold. She said, “I had to learn as a young woman to control my emotions.” Working in a field dominated by men, she couldn’t stand out. “I’m not Barack Obama. I’m not Bill Clinton. Both of them carry themselves with a naturalness that is very appealing to audiences. But I’m married to one and I’ve worked for the other, so I know how hard they work at being natural. It’s not something they just dial in. They work and they practice what they’re going to say. It’s not that they’re trying to be somebody else. But it’s hard work to present yourself in the best possible way. You have to communicate in a way that people say: ‘OK, I get her.’ And that can be more difficult for a woman. Because who are your models? If you want to run for the Senate, or run for the Presidency, most of your role models are going to be men. And what works for them won’t work for you. Women are seen through a different lens. It’s not bad. It’s just a fact. It’s really quite funny. I’ll go to these events and there will be men speaking before me, and they’ll be pounding the message, and screaming about how we need to win the election. And people will love it. And I want to do the same thing. Because I care about this stuff. But I’ve learned that I can’t be quite so passionate in my presentation. I love to wave my arms, but apparently that’s a little bit scary to people. And I can’t yell too much. It comes across as ‘too loud’ or ‘too shrill’ or ‘too this’ or ‘too that.’ Which is funny, because I’m always convinced that the people in the front row are loving it.”

“I was taking a law school admissions test in a big classroom at Harvard. My friend and I were some of the only women in the room. I was feeling nervous. I was a senior in college. I wasn’t sure how well I’d do. And while we’re waiting for the exam to start, a group of men began to yell things like: ‘You don’t need to be here.’ And ‘There’s plenty else you can do.’ It turned into a real ‘pile on.’ One of them even said: ‘If you take my spot, I’ll get drafted, and I’ll go to Vietnam, and I’ll die.’ And they weren’t kidding around. It was intense. It got very personal. But I couldn’t respond. I couldn’t afford to get distracted because I didn’t want to mess up the test. So I just kept looking down, hoping that the proctor would walk in the room. I know that I can be perceived as aloof or cold or unemotional. But I had to learn as a young woman to control my emotions. And that’s a hard path to walk. Because you need to protect yourself, you need to keep steady, but at the same time you don’t want to seem ‘walled off.’ And sometimes I think I come across more in the ‘walled off’ arena. And if I create that perception, then I take responsibility. I don’t view myself as cold or unemotional. And neither do my friends. And neither does my family. But if that sometimes is the perception I create, then I can’t blame people for thinking that.”
