On Tuesday night, the running mates of Democrat Hillary Clinton and Republican Donald Trump faced off in the only vice presidential debate. Senator Tim Kaine and former Indiana Governor Mike Pence faced off in a debate moderated by CBSN’s Elaine Quijano. The two vice-presidential candidates argued about a number of topics including foreign policy, health care, social services, and jobs. At the end of the debate, many agreed that Pence was the more polished debater, but Kaine was better at defending his running mate and talking about Clinton’s proposed policies. Pence spent the majority of the debate deflecting attacks on Trump, and not answering the many criticisms thrown his direction.
Everyone will argue about who won or who lost the debate. But they won’t have long since the next presidential debate between Clinton and Trump is this Sunday, October 9. Watch a full replay of the vice-presidential debate below.

Just hours after the conclusion of Monday’s night debate between Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump, Hillary’s running mate, Time Kaine, spoke at a canvass kickoff event in Orlando, Florida. During the event, he spoke about the importance of voting and ensuring that everyone registered to vote. “I don’t have to tell you how important Florida is. (In) Florida, the election is going to be very, very close,” he said. While in Orlando, Kaine visited the site of the “Pulse” nightclub shooting with former Representative Gabby Giffords and her husband Mark Kelly. In Ohio, Bill Clinton spoke at National Voter Registration Day events in Toledo and Cleveland. In Toledo, he spoke about last night’s debate saying that it is clear which candidate is working for everyone and which candidate is running for himself. Bill spoke about a number Hillary’s platform points, but he focused on job growth and ensuring that the economy works for everyone and not just those at the top. He went on to say that it is important that everyone register to vote and head to the polls in November to ensure that their voice is heard. “We‘ve got a chance to do something together where nobody is left out and left behind. We need to go seize it and it all starts in Ohio by registering and voting,” he said. A video of Bill’s speech is below.
Bill wrapped up the day speaking at a rally in Cleveland. He spoke about a number of Hillary’s key platform points and attacked Trump for his divisive views. But Clinton’s primary focus was voting and ensuring that everyone is registered. “This election is about you and your future and you need to claim it,” he said. On National Voter Registration, he urged everyone to vote because they have a voice. And he encouraged those in attendance to ensure their friends and family were registered as well saying, “I want you to promise yourselves that you’re going to vote, you’re going to get people registered. Anne Holton, the wife of Kaine, attended three events in Michigan today. The first was a voter protection roundtable event in Detroit where she spoke about the importance of voting and ensuring that the right to vote is protected. Holton then traveled to Livonia where she took part in a phone bank at a local Hillary for America office.
Holton’s final event of the day was in Ann Arbor where she spoke at an organizing event. Speaking to volunteers and supporters at a local campaign office, Holton urged them to ensure that they, their friends, and their family are all registered to vote and exercise their right on November 8. Holton stressed the importance of Michigan saying, “I’m going to talk about you. You are the key to this election. You all know that, right? In New York City, a fundraiser was held on behalf of Hillary for America. The event featured a conversation with Laura Benjamin, Anahi DeCanio, Peter Gumpel, Drue Kataoka, Martha McAleer, and Leonore Robins.
On Sunday, Hillary Clinton’s running mate Tim Kaine spoke at a campaign rally in Miami, Florida. During his speech at Miami-Dade College, Kaine stressed the importance of voting and spoke about a number of Clinton’s platform points. He previewed tomorrow night’s debate saying that it will be interesting to see how Donald Trump reacts when he asked tough questions about his tax returns, the Trump Foundation, and Trump University. “When the lights are bright like they are now she brings the A-plus game. She’ll be very, very good tomorrow. Donald Trump’s a performer and an entertainer, I’m not taking that away from him. But he can’t get away with the 15-second thing and then walking away. … No, it’s 90 minutes, mano y mano,” he said. A video from the event will be added when/if available.
The cast of the hit show “The West Wing,” actors Richard Schiff, Allison Janney, Bradley Whitford, Dulé Hill, Joshua Malina, and Mary McCormack, continued to campaign for Clinton today with stops in Dayton and Columbus. At each of the events, the actors took turns speaking about the importance of the 2016 election and ensuring that everyone is registered to vote before Ohio’s registration deadline on October 11. Janney, a native of Dayton, said of Clinton, “I don’t think there’s in the history of presidential candidates been someone with the depth and breadth of her experience. She is ready to do this job. We have to get it done. As Ohio goes, so goes the nation.” A video from today’s events will be added when/if available.
Meanwhile, in New York City, comedians Amy Poehler and Ana Gasteyer hosted a stand-up event and fundraiser for Hillary for America. The event, titled “Laugh your Pantsuit off” was held at The Hammerstein Ballroom. Besides Poehler and Gasteyer, other performers included Jane Curtin, Rachel Dratch, Aparna Nancherla, Jessica Williams, Phoebe Robinson, Kate Berlant, Cameron Esposito, Rhea Butler, Amber Ruffin, Jenny Hagel, Michael Ian Black, and Aziz Ansari.
Thursday was a full day on the campaign trail with ten events being held on behalf of Hillary Clinton across the country and around the world. Clinton’s running mate, Time Kaine, held a rally in Reno, Nevada where he spoke to supporters at the University of Nevada Reno. During his speech, Kaine spoke about a variety of Clinton’s proposals including her plans to combat climate change, reduce the cost of higher education, equal rights for women and members of the LGBTQ community, and paid leave. As he spoke, Kaine compared Clinton’s views with those of Donald Trump saying that he cannot be trusted. “People who trust Trump tend to get hurt by Trump,” he said. Kaine’s wife, Anne Holton, was in Ohio where she took part in four events. Holton began in Trotwood where she held a discussion on the topic of Veterans and Military Families. She spoke about Clinton’s plans to improve the Department of Veterans Affairs and ensure that military families were cared for while their loved one serves their country. In Columbus, Holton focused on early childhood education during a visit to Childhood League Center. Holton, the former Secretary of Education for Virginia, spent time with a preschool class and spoke with educators. At Holton’s final events of the day, in Delaware and Zanesville, she spoke with supporters about a number of Clinton’s platform points. Videos from the events will be added when/if available.
Chelsea Clinton attended events in Ohio and Michigan. In Toledo, Ohio, Chelsea spoke to a group of students and supporters on the campus of the University of Toledo. She spoke about a number of mother’s proposals, but focused more on her plans to reduce the cost of higher education and reduce the debt of those who have graduated from college. Chelsea said that Hillary’s plans are important because, “No one should have to make a professional choice to service debt.” Following her speech, Chelsea stopped by the local Hillary for America office in Toledo where she thanked volunteers for their hard work.
Chelsea then traveled to Grand Rapids, Michigan for a Women for Hillary event. During her speech, Chelsea focused on women and family issues saying, “My mom understands that women’s issues aren’t just women’s issues; they’re family issues and economic issues. And she understands that economic issues aren’t just economic issues, they’re also women’s issues and family issues.” Chelsea then traveled to Lansing where she spoke at a Students for Hillary event at Michigan State University. She spoke about the Hillary’s plan to help college students and reduce student debt. Following her speech, Chelsea answered questions from those in attendance. Meanwhile, a fundraiser was held on behalf of Hillary for America in Vienna, Austria. The event was only open to American citizens and featured a conversation with William C. Eacho, former United States Ambassador to Austria (2009 – 2013).
On Wednesday, Tim Kaine appeared on The Ellen DeGeneres Show. During the interview, Kaine and DeGeneres spoke about the moment he was asked by Hillary Clinton to be her running mate, his vice-presidential opponent Mike Pence, and his time on the campaign trail. Before the end of the segment, Ellen presented Kaine with a harmonica. Kaine then played a quick solo. Watch a video of the interview below.
Hillary Clinton received the endorsement of the Actors’ Equity Association. In a statement, the group said this is the first time they have endorsed a presidential candidate, but they felt the need to speak out. Executive Director Mary McColl expressed the importance of unions and the reason for their endorsement of Clinton. “Our union has historically chosen to remain nonpartisan and above the fray. But at such a critical time in our country’s history, this union does not have that luxury if we hope to protect our members. We have to fight with everything we have for our survival.” Clinton responded to the endorsement with the following statement.
“I am honored to have earned the first-ever endorsement of the Actors’ Equity Association.
I have spent my life fighting to even the odds for those who have had the odds stacked against them. That means making it possible for every child to live up to his or her God-given potential, no matter where they come from, what they look like, or who they love. And, although this is an unusual thing for a candidate for President to say, it means working to create more love and kindness in our country.
The Actors’ Equity Association shares these core values. And I couldn’t be prouder to have them standing with me in this election. The stakes could not be higher.
From the beginning, Donald Trump has based his campaign on prejudice and paranoia. He has insulted immigrants and demeaned women. He has called for banning 1.5 million people from so much as entering this country because of their religion. He mocked and mimicked a reporter with a disability. He would appoint Supreme Court justices who would overturn marriage equality, and when the time came to choose a running-mate, he selected a man who signed a law that would have allowed Indiana businesses to discriminate against LGBT people.
Donald Trump does not understand a basic truth about America: we are stronger together.
Americans don’t tear each other down—we lift each other up. We don’t build walls—we break down barriers. Together, we’ll fight to finally guarantee equal pay for women, protect workers’ rights to organize and bargain collectively, and build an economy that works for everyone, not just those at the top. On Labor Day, Hillary Clinton campaigned in Cleveland, Ohio with running mate Tim Kaine. Kaine spoke first saying that “this is the home stretch.” Clinton then took the stage and had a brief coughing spell before she spoke about her plans to build an economy that works for everyone by increasing the minimum wage and investing in the country’s infrastructure. She spoke about her jobs plan which would create the most jobs in the country since World War II. Clinton then spoke about her strong support for working families and organized labor. Today, the Clinton campaign also unveiled a new campaign plane. The Boeing 737 will be used for the remainder of the campaign cycle and is large enough for Clinton, her staff, and the press pool to travel on from event to event. Clinton welcomed the press to the plane and answered several questions from reporters on a range of topics including her thoughts on the hacking of Democratic Party emails, the FBI report about her emails, and the Clinton Foundation. Clinton then spoke at the 49th Annual Salute to Labor in Hampton, Illinois. During her speech, Clinton continued to discuss the economy and her jobs plan. She spoke about her plans to invest in the country’s infrastructure, expand the clean energy sector, and committed to building the manufacturing sector of the country. Clinton also criticized Donald Trump for not being a friend of working people saying, “My opponent thinks that wages are too high. I don’t know who he talks do.” A video of Clinton’s speech is below.
Tim Kaine was interviewed on this morning’s episode of ABC’s “This Week.” In his interview with host Martha Raddatz, Kaine answered questions about the United States’ relationship with Russia, Clinton’s lack of press conferences, and the FBI’s investigation into Hillary Clinton’s emails. Kaine defended Clinton saying that she wanted the materials released to the public. “When Congress asked the FBI give us your notes, Hillary said, ‘yeah, that’s great, give them your notes, but let the American public see it’. And what these notes demonstrate is in very significant detail, why the FBI chose not to go forward with any additional proceeding. She did make a mistake, and she made it by deciding she wanted to use one device rather than multiple devices. She’s apologized for that, she said it was a mistake, and she’s learned from it.” Kaine then turned the conversation to Donald Trump and the fact that he has not released his tax returns. On Wednesday, Univision published an article written by Senator Tim Kaine about immigration and the importance of immigrants in America. Kaine said that the diversity of America should be celebrated because it is part of what makes the country great. He promised that as Vice President, he will work with Hillary Clinton and Congress to pass comprehensive immigrant reform and ensure that families already living here are not broken up by deportation. Kaine criticized Donald Trump’s approach to immigration and his divisive language when describing immigrants. Kaine says he sees things differently. Immigrants are proud to become citizens. “I see that first-hand whenever I visit a naturalization service. I’ve heard many immigrants share their moving stories about what inspired them to become Americans, and I’ve watched as each one raised their right hand and was sworn in as a naturalized citizen,” he said. Earlier this summer, I had a chance to meet with the Orellanas, a family from Bolivia who made a home in Virginia. Wilson Orellana works for a company providing transportation for Americans with disabilities, and his wife, Roxana is an active community member who teaches Spanish to children and helps lead the local middle school’s PTA. Their two daughters, Rebeca and Marisol, worked hard in school, and Rebeca is now an engineering honors student in college.
They’re rightly proud of the life they have built for themselves. But as we spoke, they told me how terrified they were that their family would be torn apart because of their mixed status.
The Orellanas are one of so many families in America that were eligible for President Obama’s executive actions on immigration – Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) and Deferred Action for Parents of Americans (DAPA). Rebeca, who arrived in America as a child, is protected from deportation and able to pursue her dreams thanks to DACA. But for Wilson and Roxana, who wanted to stop living in fear, and more fully participate in our society, the future remains uncertain.
When we met, they were anxiously awaiting the Supreme Court’s decision on DAPA. Hillary and I believe that President Obama was well within his legal authority when he issued these actions. But now, unfortunately, the Supreme Court’s deadlocked ruling has thrown millions of families like the Orellanas back into uncertainty.
We should be doing everything we can to keep families like theirs together – not threatening them with deportation or breaking them apart. After all, they’re our friends, neighbors and classmates. They enrich our communities and contribute to our economy.
Hillary Clinton and I will continue to defend DACA and DAPA, and we’ll do everything possible under the law create a straightforward system for folks with sympathetic cases to make their case and be eligible for deferred action too.
These policies are critical, but we know that to truly fix our broken immigration system we need to pass comprehensive immigration reform. The majority of Americans support comprehensive reform not just because it’s the right thing to do – but because they know it will also strengthen our families, our economy, and our country.
We’ve waited long enough. In our first 100 days in office, Hillary and I will put comprehensive reform legislation before Congress that will include a pathway to citizenship, better border security, and addressing family visa backlog. It will enable our country to be what it’s always been – a place where people from around the world can come to start new businesses, pursue their dreams, apply their talents to American growth and innovation.
This is a very different approach than what Donald Trump has proposed. Not only does he not support comprehensive reform, but he’s threatened to send out a deportation force to round up 16 million people and kick them out of our country. Donald looks at immigrants and calls them “rapists” and “murderers.” And he even supports ending birthright citizenship – one of the basic American principles that if you’re born here, you belong here.
When I was in law school, I took a year off to volunteer in El Progreso, Honduras as a Jesuit missionary. The local community embraced me, and the values I learned from my Honduran community are the same values I see in our Latino community here in America: faith, family and hard work.
These are the very same values that built this nation. In America, we don’t build walls – we build bridges. Our shared values bring us together, and make us stronger. So we must not allow Donald Trump to create a false image of immigrants, and tear down everything this country stands for.
I see that first-hand whenever I visit a naturalization service. I’ve heard many immigrants share their moving stories about what inspired them to become Americans, and I’ve watched as each one raised their right hand and was sworn in as a naturalized citizen. Let me tell you – it’s one of the most powerful things I’ve ever seen. Hearing them always brings a smile to my face and a tear to every eye in the room. Anybody who loves America that much deserves to be here.
There’s a saying I learned in Honduras: Adelante, no atrás.
We need to go forward, not backward.
We have our work cut out for us, but if Hillary and I have the honor of serving as your President and Vice President, we’ll keep pressing forward – not backward – and keep fighting to make the American Dream a reality for everyone.
