DNC Wrap-Up: Day 2

On Tuesday evening, the second night of the Democratic National Convention in Philadelphia made history by officially nominating Hillary Clinton as the Democratic Party’s candidate for president. Clinton becomes the first female candidate to receive the nomination of a major political party. Clinton made a brief appearance via satellite from New York and thanked everyone for their support. She will officially accept the party’s nomination during her speech on Thursday.

In additional to the historic moment, the evening also featured another marquee night of speeches. Those taking the stage included Former Senator Tom Harkin, Virginia Governor Terry McAuliffe, Senator Chuck Schumer, the principal and students from Eagle Academy, Former Attorney General Eric Holder, Senator Barbara Boxer, Representative Joseph Crowley, Mothers of the Moment, former Governor of Vermont Howard Dean, and actress Meryl Streep. The most powerful speech of the evening was delivered by President Bill Clinton. He focused on he and Hillary’s relationship and personal life. He called Hillary “the best darn change-maker” that he has ever seen and said that she will fight for everyone and does not back down from a fight. The DNC is also featuring a series of videos highlighting Clinton’s career and personal life. Included in those videos Tuesday was one covering her time as Secretary of State and one about how she worked with the Eagle Academy. A third video was about the career of Bill Clinton. Today is the third day of the Democratic National Convention from Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Throughout the day today, a number of caucuses and councils will meet at the Pennsylvania Convention Center. Hillary Clinton Nominated by the Democratic Party

It is official! Tonight, the Democratic Party’s delegates cast their ballots to nominate the party’s presidential candidate. Hillary Clinton won the vote in the first round becoming the first female nominee of a major political party. The nomination is the culmination of over forty years of public service. Clinton will speak during the Democratic National Convention on Thursday to accept the party’s nomination.

Democratic National Convention Begins Tomorrow

Tomorrow, Democrats will gather in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania and office nominate Hillary Clinton and running mate Senator Tim Kaine as the Democratic ticket for president. The Convention is important because there are a series of caucus meetings and finalization of the Democratic Party platform. In a speech on Friday, Clinton promised that the convention would feature an optimistic view of America and our future as a stark contrast to the message delivered during the RNC last week.

Hillary Clinton Wins in CA, NJ, NM, and SD

Hillary Clinton had a historic night winning four out of the six primaries and securing the delegates necessary to wrap up the Democratic nomination. Clinton won at the ballot boxes in New Jersey (63.3% to 36.7%), New Mexico (51.5% to 48.5%), South Dakota (51.0% to 49.0%), and California (55.8% to 43.2%). Meanwhile, Sanders won the North Dakota caucuses (64.2% to 25.6%) and the Montana primary (51.1% to 44.6%). All eyes were on California which offered the most delegates of any state. While polls indicated that the results would be close, Clinton pulled off a decisive win. Some votes are still being counted, so these numbers will updated throughout the day.

In Brooklyn, New York, Clinton spoke to a crowd of supporters and said that she is proud to be the Democratic nominee. She spoke about the historic moment of becoming the first female presidential candidate nominated by a major party by saying, “Thanks to you, we’ve reached a milestone, the first time in our nation’s history that a woman will be a major party’s nominee!” Clinton praised the efforts of Sanders and his years of service in Congress before calling for unity in the Democratic Party to ensure the defeat of Republican nominee Donald Trump. In Washington, DC today, a fundraiser was held on behalf of Hillary for America. The event included a conversation with Congressman Sean Patrick Maloney and Councilmember Brianne Nadeau.

Live: Results from West Virginia

West Virginia went to the polls in the Democratic primary to choose between Hillary Clinton and Bernie Sanders. Polls had been close between the candidates and there was fear that Clinton’s stance on coal may hurt her in the state. Sanders won the primary by a margin of 51.4% to 35.8%. With two other Democrats on the ballot receiving votes, the delegate count was important and Sanders came out ahead in the delegate count, but ultimately netted a few pledged delegates over Clinton. The next Democratic primaries are next Tuesday, May 17, when voters in Kentucky and Oregon will head to the polls.

Clinton Second in Indiana Primary

At the closing of polls in Indiana’s primary, the one thing that was for certain was that the race between Democratic candidates Hillary Clinton and Bernie Sanders was going to be close. The race has been called in favor of Sanders and with 99.9% reporting, Sanders leads with 52.7% to Clinton’s 47.3%. With such a narrow margin, the number of delegates assigned to Sanders will not be enough for him to make a dent in Clinton’s delegate lead.

Clinton, Sanders Spar in CNN Debate

Last night, Democratic presidential candidates Hillary Clinton and Bernie Sanders faced off in their ninth debate. The debate, which aired on CNN and was moderated by Wolf Blitzer, was much more contentious then their previous debates. Sanders and Clinton began by hotly debating which candidate has the best judgement and record to be president. Throughout the debate, they debated a variety of topics including gun control, Wall Street, higher education, social security, and climate change. A full video of the debate is below.
