Hillary Clinton Statement on the Death of Alton Sterling

On Wednesday, Hillary Clinton commented on the death of Alton Sterling in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. Sterling was shot and killed during an arrest. Videos of the arrest seemingly show that his death was unnecessary. The investigation into Sterling’s death has been turned over to the U.S. Justice Department’s Civil Rights and the two officers involved have been placed on administrative leave pending an investigation. Clinton released a statement in which she says that she is glad the Department of Justice has taken over the investigation, and called for justice reform to rebuild the trust between the public and law enforcement.

“The death of Alton Sterling is a tragedy, and my prayers are with his family, including his five children. From Staten Island to Baltimore, Ferguson to Baton Rouge, too many African American families mourn the loss of a loved one from a police-involved incident. Something is profoundly wrong when so many Americans have reason to believe that our country doesn’t consider them as precious as others because of the color of their skin.

I am glad the Department of Justice has agreed to a full and thorough review of this shooting. Incidents like this one have undermined the trust between police departments and the communities they serve. We need to rebuild that trust. We need to ensure justice is served. That begins with common sense reforms like ending racial profiling, providing better training on de-escalation and implicit bias, and supporting municipalities that refer the investigation and prosecution of police-involved deaths to independent bodies. All over America, there are police officers demonstrating how to protect the public without resorting to unnecessary force. We need to learn from and build on those examples.

Progress is possible if we stand together and never waver in our fight to secure the future that every American deserves.”

Hillary Clinton Endorsed by the AFL-CIO

On Thursday, Hillary Clinton earned the endorsement of the largest group of labor unions in the country, the AFL-CIO. Representing 12.5 million members, the board voted to support Clinton. AFL-CIO President Richard Trumka said, “Hillary Clinton is a proven leader who shares our values. Throughout the campaign, she has demonstrated a strong commitment to the issues that matter to working people, and our members have taken notice. The activism of working people has already been a major force in this election and is now poised to elect Hillary Clinton and move America forward.” Clinton released a statement saying she is honored to receive the group’s support and vowed to fight for labor rights. “I am honored to have earned the endorsement of the AFL-CIO.

The AFL-CIO is one of America’s most vital organizations, having been on the front lines of the fight for good-paying jobs and careers with benefits and dignity for more than a century. AFL-CIO member unions contribute to virtually every sector of our economy and are on the job in every corner of our country—building our infrastructure, teaching our children, sowing our fields, operating our ports, and entertaining us on stage and screen.

Members of the AFL-CIO know, as I do, that we are stronger together. We are stronger when we are investing in our country and our future. As President, I will make the biggest investment in infrastructure since the Interstate Highway System—because to build a 21st century economy, we need 21st century roads, ports, transit systems, water systems, and electric grids. We will fight for good schools in every ZIP code—because all of our children deserve a chance to live up to their God-given potential. And we will fight to raise the federal minimum wage back to the highest it’s ever been, to finally join all other industrial nations in guaranteeing paid family leave for workers, and at last secure equal pay for women.

Hillary Clinton Holds Four Events in California

On Saturday, Hillary Clinton attended four campaign events in California. The first event of the day was a community discussion in Slymar. The primary topic of the event was immigration reform. Clinton said that immigration is going to be a key issue in the 2016 election because statements about immigrants made by Republican nominee Donald Trump are often “hateful, very prejudicial, really unacceptable ways.” She spoke about the importance of keeping families together and passing comprehensive immigration reform. Most of the event was Clinton listening to stories told by the several Asian and Latino immigrants. She vowed to fight for a fair immigration plan if elected president.

Clinton then traveled to Oxnard where she spoke to supporters at a Get Out the Vote event. She covered a number of her platform points, but she went after Trump several times throughout the speech saying that he “fails” a number of important presidential trait tests. Clinton said that the 2016 election is very important to ensure the country continues to move forward with health care, the economy, clean energy, and climate change. She concluded by asking voters’ to support her in Tuesday’s primary. A video of Clinton’s speech is below.

Later, Clinton traveled to Santa Barbara where she held a community event focused on women and families. The round table discussion consisted of local officials and representatives. Clinton spoke about a number of her platform points aimed at improving the lives of women and helping families. She spoke about increasing the minimum wage, ensuring that women receive equal pay for equal work, ensuring families have access to affordable childcare, and guaranteeing workers paid family leave. The final event of the day was a Get Out the Vote rally in Fresno where she spoke to packed crowd of supporters at Edison High School. While she criticized Trump on a number of occasions, Clinton covered a number of her key platform points including early childhood education, clean energy, abortion rights, marriage equality, immigration reform, and making higher education more affordable. She also spoke about an issue that is local to Fresno: water. The city has seen water shortages due to the recent droughts in the area and she said, “If I am fortunate enough to be your president, we are going to work on water and we are going to get this fixed.” A video from the event will be added when/if available.

Hillary Clinton Unveils Plan to Help Military Families

On Tuesday, Hillary Clinton released her plan to assist military families. The plan unveiled today builds upon a previously introduced plan to build upon the Department of Veteran Affairs and ensure veterans receive proper support after they have left the military. The plan includes provision that will not only ensure that the members of our military are supported, but their spouses and children will as well. • Realign the Demands of a Military Career in Service to the Nation to Accommodate 21st Century Family Realities While Maintaining a Strong Force
• Ensure that family leave policies meet the needs of our military families
• Increase access to child care for all service members in the Active Duty and Reserve who need it
• Let service members and their families take a knee
• Create the ability to serve in different ways
• Officially include life-cycle and family considerations in permanent moves
• Back Military Spouses as they Pursue Education, Seek Jobs, Build Careers and Secure their Finances
• Enhancing opportunities for military spouse employment and breaking down antiquated rules, such as onerous state credentialing, that lead to military spouse under-employment

Meanwhile, Clinton attended two fundraisers today. The first was in East Brunswick, New Jersey and included a conversation with Clinton and Senator Cory Booker. In New York City, Clinton attended an event at the Sheraton New York Times Square Hotel. The event included a conversation with her, former Attorney General Eric Holder, and actress Julianna Margulies.

Hillary Clinton Meets with Women in Virginia

On Monday, Hillary Clinton spoke with a group of women in Stone Ridge, Virginia where the focus of the conversation was managing work-life balance. Clinton spoke about her plans for paid family leave, equal pay for women, and childcare. She said that raising a family and having a career is harder today than it was when Chelsea was a kid. “Costs are greater, everything from commuting time to feeling like if you take that vacation day, you are going to be viewed as slacking off,” she said. Clinton went on to say that she knew that her proposals would change the current system, but it is important to realize that times have changed. She said, “We need to really start looking at these programs from the lens of what life is like today and not what it was like 50 years ago.” A video from the event is below.

During the event in Virginia, Clinton was asked a number of questions about the presumptive Republican nominee Donald Trump. She has refused to directly respond to any of his comments, and she stuck with tone today saying that she was focused on the issues. She said, “I’m going to let him run his campaign however he chooses. I’m going to run my campaign, which is about a positive vision for our country with specific plans that I think will help us solve problems that we’re facing.” She continued, “I’m answering him all the time. I’m answering him on what I think voters care about. I’m answering him on the differences between our records, our experience, what we want to do for our country, how important it is to try to unify the country.”

In Washington, DC, Hillary for America hosted a conversation on Social and Economic Justice. Those speaking at the event included former United States Attorney General and HFA Senior Policy Advisor Maya Harris.

Hillary Clinton Campaigns in New York, Maryland

Today, Hillary Clinton attended campaign events in three states. She began by attending Sunday morning services at the Greater Allen AME Cathedral in Jamaica, Queens. The church is led by former Congressman Rev. Floyd Flake. During her remarks to the congregation, Clinton spoke about empowering people by expanding economic opportunity. She also spoke about her plans to reduce gun violence by introducing mandatory background checks and taking on criminal justice reform.

In Baltimore, Maryland, Clinton spoke to an enthusiastic crowd after being introduced and endorsed by Congressman Elijah E. Cummings. She spoke about the accomplishments of the state of Maryland to expand paid sick leave saying that it something she would like to expand to a national level. Clinton also acknowledged the issue facing the city of Baltimore and pledged to be supportive saying, “I particularly want to pay attention to our cities, like Baltimore. I will focus particularly on communities, neighborhoods, regions that have been passed by.” Videos of today’s events will be posted when/if available.

Clinton wrapped up the day in McLean, Virginia where she attended a fundraiser. The event was held at the home of Virginia Governor Terry McAuliffe and his wife, Dorothy.
