DNC Wrap-Up: Day 3

Wednesday night’s events at the Democratic National Convention included the acceptance speech of Senator Tim Kaine as the party’s vice presidential candidate. In his speech, Kaine thanked his family before “humbly” accepting the nomination. He spoke about Hillary Clinton’s experience and why the 2016 election is vital for the country. A video biography of Kaine and a video of his speech are below.

Speakers from the evening included New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio, Reverend Jesse Jackson, former Maryland Governor Martin O’Malley, California Governor Jerry Brown, Senator Chris Murphy, Gabby Giffords and Mark Kelly, Former Secretary of Defense Leon Panetta, and Michael Bloomberg. The headline speeches from the event were from Vice President Joe Biden and President Barack Obama. Biden gave an energetic speech supporting Clinton while President Obama gave a stirring speech in which the overall message was America is better than Donald Trump. At the end of the speech, he was joined on stage by Clinton. A selection of the speeches are below and more videos from the Convention are available on YouTube.

The DNC released another set of videos highlighting Clinton’s long career, attacking Trump, and presenting an alternative to the Republican vision of America’s future.

Democratic National Convention Schedule: Day 3

Today is the third day of the Democratic National Convention from Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Throughout the day today, a number of caucuses and councils will meet at the Pennsylvania Convention Center. Then tonight, the events move to the Wells Fargo Center where Senator Tim Kaine will accept the party’s nomination as vice presidential candidate, and a number of speakers are scheduled including Vice President Joe Biden and President Barack Obama. Clinton Comments About Vice President Joe Biden

Today, Vice President Joe Biden announced his decision not to run for president in 2016. There has been much speculation about a possible run by Biden. Hillary Rodham Clinton released a statement today praising Biden for his dedication to the United States and his character. The full statement is below:

Joe Biden is a good man and a great Vice President. Serving alongside him in the Senate and then the administration, I saw first-hand his passion for our country and our people. Like millions of others, I admire his devotion to family, his grace in grief, his grit and determination on behalf of the middle class, and his unyielding faith in America’s promise. As Vice President, Joe has been by President Obama’s side for every pivotal decision. He helped save the auto industry and pull our economy back from the brink of depression. He continues to fight for higher wages, safer communities, and a more peaceful world. It’s a record to be proud of, defend, and build on. And I am confident that history isn’t finished with Joe Biden. As he said today, there is more work to do. And if I know Joe, he will always be on the front-lines, always fighting for all of us.

First Democratic Debate Tomorrow on CNN

CNN has released full details of tomorrow night’s Democratic debate from Las Vegas, Nevada which will feature Hillary Rodham Clinton, Bernie Sanders, Martin O’Malley, Jim Webb, and Lincoln Chafee. Vice President Joe Biden, who has not formally announced his candidacy, was invited to participate, but will not. The debate will be moderated by Anderson Cooper with Dana Bash and Juan Carlos Lopez also asking questions. Coverage begins at 8:30 PM ET on CNN and on CNN.com (we will post a link to the live stream before the debate begins). You can submit questions for the moderators to ask the candidates on Facebook and Instagram.

This is the first of six debates between the Democratic candidates. The other five debates are scheduled for:

Clinton on “Face the Nation”

This morning, Hillary Rodham Clinton appeared on the CBS morning show Face the Nation. Host John Dickerson asked her about a wide variety topics including her email, Benghazi, Planned Parenthood, her campaign, and a possible presidential run by Vice President Joe Biden. She also spoke about her Democratic rival Bernie Sanders. She has been criticized by many supporters by not addressing Sanders, especially as he has risen in the polls.

A topic Dickerson and Clinton spoke at length about was Syria and the refugee crisis. Clinton believes the United States should accept some of the refugees. She said, “You know, look, we’re facing the worst refugee crisis since the end of World War II and I think the United States has to do more and I would like to see us move from what is a good start with 10,000 to 65,000 and begin immediately to put into place the mechanisms for vetting the people we would take in, looking to really emphasis some of those who are most vulnerable.” A a full video of the interview is available below:

Clinton to Attend Rev. Pinckney’s Funeral Service

Hillary Rodham Clinton will attend the funeral of Rev. Clementa Pinckney, one of the nine victims of last week’s shooting at the Emanuel African Methodist Episcopal Church in Charleston, South Carolina. She will attend the service along with several members of Congress, Vice President Joe Biden, and President Barack Obama, who will be delivering Rev. Pinckney’s eulogy. Clinton cancelled a fundraising event in Philadelphia that was scheduled for tomorrow.
