Hillary Clinton Interviewed by 11-Year-Old Marley Dias

Elle published a great series of Hillary Clinton’s answers to questions asked by Marley Dias, the 11-year-old creator of #1000BlackGirlBooks, a book drive dedicated to collecting stories about black girls. In the article, Dias explains that she had questions for the Democratic presidential nominee and decided to email them to her, and Clinton responded. The questions Dias asked Clinton include “What is your favorite black girl book,” “Tell me about a time that someone took credit for something you did, and how did you deal with it,” “If you were on a deserted island, what three things would you want to have with you,” and “If you had to give any advice to your 11-year-old self what would you say to her.” Clinton is open and honest in her answers, and she even reveals a story about her running for class president in high school. Hillary Clinton Statement on Passage of Puerto Rico Debt Bill

On Wednesday, Congress passed a debt relief plan for Puerto Rico which has begun defaulting on its debts. The bill has been sent to President Barack Obama for his signature. The bill includes a number of provisions including the creation of an oversight committee. Hillary Clinton released a statement in which she expressed her concern over the creation and appointments to the committee. She vowed to continue working with Puerto Rico if elected president, and promised to work to bring more benefits to the territory. A copy of Clinton’s statement is below:

“Puerto Rico’s continuing economic crisis has caused real suffering for the people of the island.  The bill the Senate passed today is the best chance we have of averting a fiscal crisis on July 1. The bill is by no means perfect, and I continue to have serious concerns about some of the provisions it contains. That’s why, as this bill is implemented, I will continue to stand with the people of Puerto Rico to ensure that the oversight board created by this legislation is made up of members who will act in the best interest of Puerto Ricans, and protect their health care, pensions, wages, and well-being. And it is past time that we put the interests of American citizens ahead of hedge fund profits—which is why I will fight with the people of Puerto Rico to put the island’s economy back on a stable and prosperous path, including by ensuring Puerto Rico is treated equitably under federal law.”

“La continua crisis económica de Puerto Rico ha causado gran sufrimiento en los puertorriqueños. El proyecto de ley aprobado hoy por el Senado es la mejor opción que tenemos en este momento para evitar una crisis fiscal el 1ro de julio. El proyecto no es para nada perfecto y continúo teniendo serias preocupaciones sobre algunas de las provisiones. Hillary Clinton Wins Virgin Islands Caucuses

The U.S. Virgin Islands’ Democratic Party announced that Hillary Clinton defeated Bernie Sanders in their Democratic caucuses on Saturday. The final results indicate that Clinton won by a substantial margin with 84.2% of the votes Sanders’ 12.2%. Party rules require that a candidate win at least 15% of the vote to receive delegates, so Clinton scored all 7 of the U.S. Virgin Islands’ delegates. While citizens of US Territories are eligible to vote in party primaries, federal law prevents them from voting in presidential elections. Clinton has promised that as president she will push for voting rights in US Territories.

Bill Clinton Campaigns in Virgin Islands

On Monday, Bill Clinton held an organizing event in St. Croix, part of the US Virgin Islands. Clinton spoke to supporters in preparation for the territory’s primary on June 4th. He spoke about Hillary’s plan for the United States and how the Virgin Islands and other US Territories will benefit. Clinton said that the Virgin Islands deserves equal treatment when it comes to health care and the economy. US Territories do not enjoy the same benefits as states, nor do they have voting representatives in Congress. Clinton also hinted at his potential role in a Hillary Clinton administration saying, “I’ll do whatever I’m asked to do, but I like this economic business.” A full video from the event will be posted when/if available.

Earlier in the day, Clinton attended a fundraiser in Nashville, Tennessee. The event was held at Adele’s.
