Hillary Clinton Campaigns in Lexington and Louisville

On Tuesday, Hillary Clinton held three events in Kentucky while citizens of neighboring West Virginia voted in their Democratic primary. Clinton’s first event was in Lexington where she laid out a new plan to help parents with the rising costs of child care. Speaking at a roundtable event, Clinton outlined the plan and spoke with care providers and parents about the importance of child care and the struggle for many families to find and afford adequate care. The bullet points of the plan includes:

• Improve the quality of care by giving a RAISE (Respect And Increased Salaries for Early Childhood Educators) to America’s child care workforce
• Provide home visiting services for more than 2 million parents and children in the next 10 years
• Support young parents as the balance family responsibilities and their careers
• Award scholarships of up to $1,500 per year to as many as one million student parents
• Increase access to child care on college campuses by serving an additional 250,000 children
• Doubling federal investment in high quality early learning programs
• Making preschool universal for every 4-year old in America
• Proving working parents paid time off to care for a new baby

Clinton then traveled to Louisville where she spoke at a rally. During her speech, Clinton focused on the economy and her plans to raise incomes and create new jobs. She also spoke about a number of other platform points before turning her attention to local politics and her Republican opposition. She criticized Kentucky Governor Matt Bevin for his plans to scrap the state’s health insurance exchanges and the state’s expansion of medicaid, both of which were provided as a result of the Affordable Care Act. Clinton then turned her attention to Republicans and their endless attacks on her career saying, “The right wing never gives up attacking me. I think they are going to throw everything but the kitchen sink at me…I’ve got a message for them. They’ve done it for 25 years and I’m still standing.” A video from the event will be posted when/if available.

In the evening, Clinton spoke at a second organizing event in Louisville. During her speech at Louisville Slugger Field, Clinton took a number of shots at presumptive Republican nominee Donald Trump and his disparaging comments about women and minorities. She said, “You could not imagine a more different vision for our country than the one between our side, of Democrats for progress, for prosperity, for fairness and opportunity than the presumptive nominee on the Republican side.” Clinton focused on her plans to continue the progress of President Barack Obama’s administration and ensure that people have access to health care and affordable higher education. Bill Clinton Campaigns for Hillary in North Carolina and Florida

On Monday, Bill Clinton was on the campaign trail spending time in two states that hold their primaries tomorrow. He began with a morning Get Out the Vote rally in Greenville, North Carolina. During his speech, he spoke about Hillary’s experience and her career as a change maker. He said that her plans would ensure that everyone had access to the tools necessary to live up to their potential. He then asked North Carolinians to support her in tomorrow’s primary.

Clinton then traveled to Florida where he hosted a rally at Florida A&M University in Tallahassee. In his speech, he argued that it is important to keep a Democrat in the White House. He said, “We have 14 million new jobs over the last five years. That’s the most we’ve had since that other Democrat, whatever his name was. And we have 90 percent of our people with health insurance for the first time.” He also criticized the Republican presidential candidates for not sticking to the issues and focusing more on fighting each other. Bill, Chelsea Campaign for Hillary before Super Tuesday

On Sunday, Bill and Chelsea Clinton were on the campaign trail in support of Hillary Clinton. Bill spent the day in Florida where he attended fundraisers in Miami and Boca Raton. In Miami Gardens, he spoke at a Get Out the Vote event where he covered Hillary’s call for increased gun control, improving health care, and resolving systemic racism. He asked voters to support Hillary in the upcoming March 15th primary. A video from his speech will be added when/if available.

Chelsea was in Minnesota before Tuesday’s caucuses, and she attended Get Out the Caucus events in Minnetonka and South St. Paul. She also spoke at a Women for Hillary event in Rochester. At each of the events, she spoke about her mother’s experience and platform, focusing particularly on her work with children and women’s rights. Chelsea said, “She set the expectations that every embassy representing our country around the world would know what was happening to women and girls in terms of rights, opportunities, safety, health, participation. And she spent three years building a bipartisan coalition to create the children’s health insurance program, which covers more than eight million low-income kids, including tens of thousands here in Minnesota.” Videos from today’s events will be posted when/if available.

Chelsea Clinton Campaigns for Hillary in New Hampshire

On Tuesday, Chelsea Clinton hit the campaign trail on behalf of her mother, Hillary Clinton, and Hillary for America. In New Hampshire, she hosted events in Concord, Manchester, and Portsmouth. Each of the events were smaller in size and were conversational. She focused on Hillary’s plans to provide early childhood education, lower the cost of higher education, and improve upon the Affordable Care Act. Chelsea took the opportunity to criticize her mother’s chief rival, Bernie Sanders, for his plans to dismantle the current heath care system. She said, “I never thought that I would be arguing about the Affordable Care Act or Obamacare in the Democratic primary. Senator Sanders wants to dismantle Obamacare, dismantle the CHIP program, dismantle Medicare and private insurance.” A video from Chelsea’s events will be posted when/if available.

Today, Bill Clinton also attended a fundraiser hosted by Oni Chukwu in Black Rock, Connecticut. He was also scheduled to appear at a fundraiser reception hosted by John and Lisa Levy Goldberg in New York City. All three Clintons have been on the campaign trail, and have focuses on the early primary states, particularly New Hampshire and Iowa. Both states have primaries in early February.

Clinton Unveils Plan to Support those Living with Autism

At an event held today in Sioux City, Iowa, Hillary Clinton outlined her plan to to help families who face Autism on a daily basis. The sweeping plan includes increasing screening, improving treatments, creating partnerships for employment opportunities, and committing additional research funding to better understand Autism. During the town hall, Clinton introduced her plan, then took questions from those in attendance. In addition to discussing her plan at the event in Sioux City, Clinton also released additional details on The Briefing. An outline of her plan is below.

• Screening and Awareness
  • Boost early screening rates with a nationwide outreach campaign
  • Promote multi-sector awareness campaign
• Autism Treatment and Insurance Coverage
  • Improve access to autism services in the ACA marketplace and through private health insurance
  • Increase state compliance with Medicaid coverage requirements for children with autism and other developmental disabilities and create an autism-service-access scorecard that makes state Medicaid compliance publicly accessible
  • Work with the Department of Defense to ensure military families have full access to autism services through TRICARE
• Safety and Services for Children and Youth
  • Enact the Keeping All Students Safe Act
  • Protect children with autism from bullying in their classrooms
• Community Supports and Services for Individuals Transitioning into Adulthood
  • Launch a new Autism Works Initiative consisting of a post-graduation transition plan for every student with autism aging out of school-based services and a public-private partnership with employers
  • Combine the Autism Works Initiative with new legislation to fund employment demonstration grants for individuals with autism and other disabilities
  • Increase housing opportunities for autistic youth and adults
• Caregiving
  • Encourage all states to enact ABLE legislation and ensure consumer protection for ABLE account beneficiaries

  • Significantly increase funding so that the government can invest more in autism research

Clinton Opposed to Health Insurer Merger

On Wednesday, Hillary Rodham Clinton released a statement opposing the proposed mergers of proposed mergers between Anthem and Cigna and of Aetna and Humana. Clinton has been supportive of the Affordable Care Act because it gives consumers more choice, but mergers ensure less choice and less competition. The full statement from Clinton is below:

As we see more consolidation in health care, among both providers and insurers, I’m worried that the balance of power is moving too far away from consumers.  

I have serious concerns about the proposed mergers between Anthem and Cigna, and between Aetna and Humana. One could raise market concentration in New Hampshire to excessive levels, and both have concerning effects on competition in other markets. These mergers should be scrutinized very closely with an eye to preventing the undue concentration that they appear to create. I am very skeptical of the claim that consumers will benefit from them because the evidence from careful studies shows that too often the companies end up pocketing profits rather than passing savings to consumers. These companies should commit to passing on savings and efficiencies to consumers as lower premiums and out-of-pocket costs.

I strongly support delivery system reforms and care coordination that drive innovation, value and quality at an affordable cost for Americans and that improve transparency about prices – but companies proposing to merge bear the heavy burden of demonstrating that consumers will benefit. As president, I would strengthen the antitrust enforcement arms of the Department of Justice and the Federal Trade Commission and appoint aggressive regulators to take on troubling concentration wherever it occurs in the health care industry, among other sectors. That’s a pro-competition approach that is good for businesses large and small who want to compete on a level playing field and for consumers who should gain more choices.

Healthcare Information and Management Systems Society

Hillary Rodham Clinton gave the keynote address for the Healthcare Information and Management Systems Society (HIMSS) conference in Florida. Clinton defended parts the Affordable Care Act, but noted her concern for small businesses. She made it clear that she has concerns with parts of the law and that she is open to changes. The conference was for IT professionals in the healthcare industry, and she told the crowd that they were part of the solution to the challenges of healthcare reform.
