President Barack Obama campaigned for Hillary Clinton at two events in North Carolina today. In Fayetteville, Obama spoke about the importance of the election and urged everyone to focus on electing Clinton president. During the event, the president was interrupted by a man with a sign for Donald Trump. The crowd began to chant and boo him, but Obama hushed the crowd and said, “I told you to be focused, and you’re not focused right now. Listen to what I’m saying. Hold up, hold up, hold up, hold up, hold up. Everybody sit down and be quiet for a second.” He explained that it is that man’s right to support the candidate of his choice, but those of us who support Clinton need to get out and show our support. In Charlotte, Obama said that polls are showing that the election will be close, but in order for victory to be guaranteed, everyone needs to vote. Obama did outline a number of Clinton’s platform points including her plans to raise minimum wage, make college more affordable, and invest in clean energy. He also spoke about her dedication to creating jobs and building on the progress of the job market over the last several years. But he warned that electing Trump would end it all. “Everything we fought for, all of that goes out the window if we don’t win this election,” he said. A video from the Charlotte event is below.
On Wednesday, Bill Clinton wrapped up a two day campaign bus tour in North Carolina. He began the day in Wilmington where he spoke on the campus of Cape Fear Community College. During his speech, Bill spoke about Hillary Clinton’s plans to bolster the economy by investing in the country’s infrastructure, focusing on bringing manufacturing jobs back to America, raising the minimum wage, and making college more affordable. Bill spoke about the dangers of electing Donald Trump and framed Hillary as the only candidate with a complete plan to move America forward. He said, “Believe it or not, even things like emergency help for people after natural disasters may be on the line here. And one thing you won’t have to worry about with Hillary as president, it’s somebody that’ll have your back when you’re in need and you need to start again.” Bill concluded by urging everyone to on November 8th or to take advantage of early voting. Bill then spoke at events in Pembroke and Fayetteville. He continued to focus on the issues and the differences between the policies proposed by Hillary and Trump. He spoke about the campaign’s motto, Stronger Together, and how it is a blueprint for America. He said “When she says stronger together. When she says this wall-building and anti-Muslim rhetoric is not only bad for America, it’s bad for the rest of the world. It’s because she knows we live in a world where we have to have partners.” Bill encouraged everyone to take advantage of early voting or to head to the polls on November 8th. On Saturday, the current Second Lady of the United States Jill Biden campaigned with the woman hoping to soon hold that title, Anne Holton. The pair attended events in North Carolina, and they began their day in Fayetteville. They spoke at Fayetteville Technical Community College about the importance of the election and, how as military moms, they both trust Hillary Clinton over Donald Trump. “I trust Hillary Clinton. She understands the importance of using our military power when it is needed – but only when it’s needed,” Holton said.
While in Fayeteville, they also attended a canvass kick-off event before heading to an early voting rally in Jacksonville. The two spoke about similar topics at each event and highlighted a number of Clinton’s key platform points. Their primary message, however, was about the importance of voting and ensuring that everyone has their say in this election. Speaking about the access to early voting in North Carolina, Holton said, “You have strong early voting laws in this state. You had to fight to get it. The members of the Mothers of the Movement group spent Monday and Tuesday of this week campaigning on behalf of Hillary Clinton across North Carolina. The group of three mothers, united by the loss of a child due to gun violence, held a series of roundtable discussions and community events in Fayetteville, Durham, Greensboro, and Charlotte. At each event, the group told their stories and discussed a number of points outlined by Clinton including her plans for criminal justice reform and her proposal to reduce gun violence.
The mothers taking part in each event were Gwen Carr, the mother of Eric Garner; Geneva Reed-Veal, the mother of Sandra Bland; and Maria Hamilton, the mother of Dontre Hamilton. Videos from the events will be posted when/if available.
Also on Tuesday, two fundraisers were held on behalf of Hillary for America in Denver, Colorado. Each of the events featured a conversation with Maya Harris, HFA Senior Policy Advisor.
Today, Tim Kaine and his wife Anne wrapped up a two-day stop in North Carolina. They spoke to a group of supporters in Fayetteville where Kaine focused on the economy. He said that Hillary Clinton will be the “you’re hired” president as opposed to Donald Trump’s “you’re fired” business history. Kaine said that Clinton’s economic plan will create millions of jobs by focusing on manufacturing, clean energy, and infrastructure. Kaine went on to say that everyone does better when the economy works for everyone. “If we value work and if we value workers and if we value families, then we ought to have policies like a livable minimum wage that show we value it and enable people to live in a decent and dignified way,” he said. On Friday, Bill Clinton, Chelsea Clinton, and Olympic figure skater Michelle Kwan attended a number of events across the country in support of Hillary Clinton. Bill began in Kansas City, Missouri, making up for an appearance he had to previously cancel due to weather. Speaking at the Kansas City Carpenters Union Training Facility, Bill spoke about Hillary’s experience and her plans to build upon progress that has already been made. He criticized Hillary’s Democratic rival Bernie Sanders for wanting to scrap health care and start over saying, “It’s a lot easier to go from 90 to 100 than it is to go from zero to 100.” A video from his speech is below.
Bill then traveled to Springfield, Missouri for a rally at the Teamsters Hall. During his speech, he said that it was great to be back in the Ozarks, where he and Hillary were married in Fayetteville, Arkansas. Bill said that Hillary is the best qualified candidate running for either party, and she will make sure everyone has a change in America. Bill rounded out the day at a Get Out the Vote event in Peoria, Illinois. During his speech, Clinton spoke about Hillary’s plans to boost manufacturing and build on heath care. At one point, Bill was interrupted by a protester. The protester left after shouting above the crowd to which Bill said, “I listened to you, why won’t you stay and listen to me?” He then continued to talk about Hillary’s plans to reduce higher education costs and help those currently paying off student debt.
Chelsea spent the day attending events across the state of Florida as they gear up to vote in the Democratic primary on March 15. She began the day in Tallahassee where she spoke at two separate events. During each of the events, Chelsea spoke about her mom’s record and experience and called the 2016 election “the most important presidential election in my lifetime.” She criticized Republicans for their proposed policies saying, “The racism, the sexism, the Islamophobia, the homophobia, the anti-immigrant rhetoric, the anti-workers rhetoric … it is an almost endless list. And then the policy ideas that flow from that – to build a wall, to expel 11 or 12 million people who are here working hard for lives of dignity and opportunity and promise for themselves and their families, to keep a list of every American Muslim. We need a president to stand up and protect our values.”
Chelsea then attended events in Sarasota and St. Petersburg. At each of the events she, again, spoke about the importance of the 2016 election and how it will have ripple effects on the economy and Supreme Court. She also spoke about Hillary’s plans to build upon the progress of the last eight years and improve heath care, address gun violence, and make a college education more affordable. She said, “Clearly we don’t live in a single issue country and we need a president that understands that as President Obama certainly does.” A video from the St. Petersburg event is available on C-SPAN.
In California, Kwan attended three fundraisers. The first was in San Jose, then Kwan headed to Oakland for an event hosted by Assemblymember Rob Bonta, Sonia Delen, Andy Duong, Dr. Rollington Ferguson, and Zach Wasserman. The final event of the day was a fundraiser in San Francisco. Kwan met with a number of female lawyers at the event hosted by Sara Brody, Lindsay Carlson, Lauri Damrell, Lisa Gilford, Gay Gunfeld, Valerie McGinty, Drucilla Ramey, Ann Patterson.
