Today, Hillary Clinton released the following statement on the official appointment of António Guterres as the next United Nations Secretary-General:
“I would like to extend my warmest congratulations to António Guterres on his appointment as the next Secretary-General of the United Nations. Throughout his career, Mr. Guterres has proven himself to be an advocate for human rights and a champion for the most vulnerable. As UN High Commissioner for Refugees, he provided help and hope to millions of men, women and children who have been forced to flee from their homes. And he is a consensus-builder who can bring people together to advance common interests and address common challenges. I was heartened that Mr. Guterres indicated that gender equality will be a top priority when filling senior positions. I strongly support efforts that increase diversity in UN leadership. And if I’m elected President of the United States, I look forward to working with Mr. Guterres and all of our partners to help shape a more peaceful and prosperous future for every global citizen.”
Senator Bernie Sanders campaigned on behalf of Hillary Clinton in Michigan today. His first event was held in Dearborn where he spoke to a crowd of supporters at the local UAW hall. During his speech, Sanders spoke about a number of Hillary’s platform points including her plan to create jobs and her support of labor unions. He also went after Donald Trump for avoiding to pay income taxes. Overall, however, Sanders offered a populist tone saying, “This campaign is not about Donald Trump or Hillary Clinton — it is about you and your families. We’re not voting for class president of our high school … we are fighting for the survival of the middle class.” A video from the event is below.
Sanders then traveled to Ann Arbor where he spoke to an enthusiastic crowd on the campus of the University of Michigan. During the event, Sanders spoke about the importance of voting, particularly young people, and urged them to get out and vote in November. He spoke about a number of Hillary’s platform points and specifically focused on her plans to reduce the cost of higher education. He said, “What she said is, I should tell the American people that in the first 100 days of her administration she will roll out a very specific plan to make public colleges and universities tuition free for all families earning less than $125,000 a year. In Lansing, Sanders spoke to a crowd of students and supporters on the campus of Michigan State University. Sanders continued to speak about a number of Hillary’s platform points while going after Trump for his policies. Focusing on the economy and the struggle of the middle class, he said, “We have come a long way in fighting racism, sexism, homophobia. But today we have one huge struggle in front of us, and that is the economic struggle. And that means that we should not be living in a nation which has more wealth and income inequality than any other major country on earth.” A video of Sanders speech is below.
Sanders’ final event of the day was a rally in Grand Rapids. During the event, Sanders continued with his populist tone talking about the local economy and how a number Hillary’s proposals will be beneficial to the area. He spoke about raising the minimum wage and creating new good paying jobs in the area by reinvesting in manufacturing and clean energy. A video from the event will be posted when/if available.
Chelsea Clinton meanwhile was in Minneapolis, Minnesota where she spoke about Hillary’s plans to help mothers and families. During the event, Chelsea highlighted a number of Hillary’s platform points including her plans to cap the out of pocket costs of childcare, ensure that women are paid equally, raise the minimum wage, and create new jobs by investing in infrastructure and clean energy. Chelsea also spoke about the public perception of her mother saying, “I don’t understand the caricature of my mom. I wish more people could see the huggable, lovable, hilarious side of her that I see now when we are together, with my children, and that I have known my whole life.” Chelsea closed out the event by answering questions from those in attendance. In Los Angeles, California, a fundraiser was held on behalf of Hillary for America. The event featured a conversation with Senator Al Franken.
On Saturday, Tim Kaine gave the keynote address at the Human Rights Campaign National Dinner in Washington, DC. During his speech, Kaine spoke about his personal support for the LGBTQ community and Hillary Clinton’s campaign pledge to ensure equal rights for the LGBTQ community is ensured with the passage of the Equality Act. Kaine, a Catholic, spoke about the Catholic Church’s position on same-sex marriage saying, “My full, complete, unconditional support for marriage equality is at odds with the current doctrine of the church that I still attend. But I think that’s going to change, too.” He also criticized Donald Trump’s position on LGBTQ rights saying that Trump is “no friend to this community, and he’s no friend to the value of equality.” A video of Kaine’s speech is below.
While in Washington, DC, Kaine also attended a DC for45 fundraising event for Hillary for America.
Hillary for America Senior Policy Advisor Jake Sullivan today responded to a proposal made by Republican Donald Trump last week. Trump called for Muslim immigrants entering or visiting the United States to be submitted to an ideological test. In a statement, Sullivan said that Trump’s proposal “cannot be taken seriously.” The campaign also released a video highlighting Trump’s comments. Sullivan’s statement and HFA’s video are below.
“This so-called ‘policy’ cannot be taken seriously. How can Trump put this forward with a straight face when he opposes marriage equality and selected as his running mate the man who signed an anti-LGBT law in Indiana? It’s a cynical ploy to escape scrutiny of his outrageous proposal to ban an entire religion from our country and no one should fall for it.”
On Sunday, Hillary Clinton spoke at the United States Conference of Mayors where she spoke about a number of her platform points. She focused on attacking Republican Donald Trump’s positions on a number of topics, although she never mentioned him by name. Clinton also spoke about gun control saying that it is imperative to act and reduce gun violence. She cited surveys which indicate that the vast majority of Americans and gun owners alike support mandatory background checks for the purchase of a firearm. Clinton said, “I know we can respect the 2nd Amendment and make common sense reforms.” A video of Clinton’s speech is below:
Earlier in the day, Clinton marched in the New York City Pride Parade where she joined Governor Andrew Cuomo, Mayor Bill de Blasio, and Rev. Al Sharpton. The Pride Parade celebrates the LGBT community and the monumental Supreme Court ruling that ensures states cannot block same-sex marriage. The court’s ruling was announced a year ago today.
Following her speech, Clinton went to Cincinnati, Ohio where she attended a campaign fundraiser. The event was hosted by Mayor John Cranley, Dena Cranley, Allan Berliant, and Jennie Rosenthal Berliant. Yesterday, a fundraiser was held on behalf of Hillary for America for American citizens living abroad. The event was held in Paris, France and was billed as a Men’s Fashion Week Party. Speaking at the event were actor Kyle MacLachlan and Project Runway producer Desiree Gruber.
One year ago today, the Supreme Court ruled that it is illegal for states to block LGBT citizens from getting married. The decision came out of two cases (United States v. Windsor and Obergefell v. Hodges), and the rulings proved to be a historic moment in the United States. Hillary Clinton released a statement praising the progress that has been made, and she vowed to continue to fight for equal rights for LGBT Americans under federal law. “One year ago today, we celebrated a watershed moment for equality in America. Thanks to the bravery of LGBT Americans like Jim Obergefell and Edie Windsor, and the determination and tireless organizing of the LGBT community and their allies, marriage equality became the law of the land in all 50 states.
Over the last year, more barriers to equality have fallen – including, finally, the last state law banning same-sex couples from adopting. Just this month, President Obama designated Stonewall as the first national monument commemorating LGBT history in America.
We’ve also seen how much work is still unfinished. The attack in Orlando broke our hearts, and reminded us that LGBT people – particularly people of color – are still targets for harassment and violence. Discriminatory laws in states like North Carolina highlight the need for full federal equality under the law for LGBT Americans. And Donald Trump’s pledge to consider appointing Supreme Court justices who would overturn marriage equality underscores the fact that so much of the progress we’ve made is at stake in November.
But even when the road ahead seems daunting, never forget: on this day in history, love triumphed in the highest court in the land. Today, our march toward a more perfect union continues—toward equality, dignity, and justice for all.”
On Saturday, Hillary Clinton attended four campaign events in California. The first event of the day was a community discussion in Slymar. The primary topic of the event was immigration reform. Clinton said that immigration is going to be a key issue in the 2016 election because statements about immigrants made by Republican nominee Donald Trump are often “hateful, very prejudicial, really unacceptable ways.” She spoke about the importance of keeping families together and passing comprehensive immigration reform. Most of the event was Clinton listening to stories told by the several Asian and Latino immigrants. She vowed to fight for a fair immigration plan if elected president.
Clinton then traveled to Oxnard where she spoke to supporters at a Get Out the Vote event. She covered a number of her platform points, but she went after Trump several times throughout the speech saying that he “fails” a number of important presidential trait tests. Clinton said that the 2016 election is very important to ensure the country continues to move forward with health care, the economy, clean energy, and climate change. Later, Clinton traveled to Santa Barbara where she held a community event focused on women and families. The round table discussion consisted of local officials and representatives. Clinton spoke about a number of her platform points aimed at improving the lives of women and helping families. She spoke about increasing the minimum wage, ensuring that women receive equal pay for equal work, ensuring families have access to affordable childcare, and guaranteeing workers paid family leave. The final event of the day was a Get Out the Vote rally in Fresno where she spoke to packed crowd of supporters at Edison High School. While she criticized Trump on a number of occasions, Clinton covered a number of her key platform points including early childhood education, clean energy, abortion rights, marriage equality, immigration reform, and making higher education more affordable. She also spoke about an issue that is local to Fresno: water. The city has seen water shortages due to the recent droughts in the area and she said, “If I am fortunate enough to be your president, we are going to work on water and we are going to get this fixed.” A video from the event will be added when/if available.
On Friday, CNN published an op-ed written by Hillary Clinton focusing on LGBT equality in America. In the piece, Clinton says that America is moving forward with the recent Supreme Court ruling and some states banning employers for firing an employee because of their sexual orientation. She warns, however, that Republican nominee Donald Trump has called himself a “traditional guy” when it comes to lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender rights. Trump has said that he would support the First Amendment Defense Act, which would allow organizations to deny services to LGBT people citing their religious beliefs as their reason. On Thursday, Bill and Chelsea Clinton were on the campaign trail on behalf of Hillary Clinton. Bill spoke to a crowd of supporters at the Keystone Building in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, and he emphasized Hillary’s experience and her plans to create jobs, reduce student debt, and continue health care reform. The focus of his speech was equality and ensuring that everyone in America was benefiting from the country’s successes. He said that the country is stronger when everyone rises together. Bill argued that is Hillary’s primary concern. He said, “She always finds a way to make something good happen. Chelsea held three organizing events in Maryland to encourage early voting and to rally support for her mother before next week’s primary. She spoke at events in Silver Springs, Beltsville, and Randallstown. At each of the events, she spoke about the importance of the 2016 election and why Hillary is the best choice for president. She pointed to Hillary’s experience and said that this election is “the most important election in my lifetime.” Chelsea took questions from attendees on a number of topics including her mother’s Democratic rival Bernie Sanders, the refinancing of student loans, and the perception of Hillary being untrustworthy. On Sunday, Chelsea and Bill Clinton returned to the west coast to campaign for Hillary Clinton. In Arizona, Bill Clinton attended two Get Out the Vote rallies before Tuesday’s primary. The first rally was in Tuscon where he was joined by former Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords and her husband Mark Kelly. During Bill’s speech, he spoke about Hillary’s plans to enact common sense gun control and introduce required background checks when purchasing a firearm. He also spoke about immigration reform, which is a hot button issue in Arizona. Throughout his speech, he stressed the importance of the 2016 election and urged voters to support Hillary on Tuesday. Bill then attended a Get Out the Vote event in Phoenix. Speaking from Central High School, Bill addressed the national mood saying that he understands why people are angry, but we need to vote for someone who is going to make a difference and not someone who is full of rhetoric. Again, he touched on a number of key platform topics including immigration reform, health care, and economic equality. He concluded by asking for Arizona’s support on Tuesday, saying, “Needless to say, we had a pretty tough campaign eight years ago, and Arizona voted with us. Chelsea was in California where she attended three fundraisers. The first was held at the Los Angeles home of Elsa and Jarron Collins. The second event, hosted by Elsa Collins, featured a bicycle ride in West Hollywood. For the final event of the day, Chelsea was joined by actresses Lena Dunham and America Ferrera at NeueHouse Hollywood in Los Angeles.
Two additional fundraisers were held on Sunday. The first was a reception with Campaign Manager Robby Mook in Dallas, Texas. The fundraiser took place at the home of Jorge Baldor. In Seattle, Washington, a fundraiser was held at the home of Jen Lamson and Ric Ilgenfritz. The event, which was hosted by Jen Lamson, Marilyn Heiman, and Marilyn Twitchell, featured a special live musical performance by Sheryl Wiser.
