Hillary for America Canvasses the Country on National Voter Registration Day

September 27, 2016 is National Voter Registration Day and Hillary for America canvassed the country holding nearly 1,400 voter registration drives to ensure that Americans were registered to vote before their states’ deadlines. HFA released the following information outlining what they did today.

Following last night’s debate, Hillary Clinton, Tim Kaine and high profile surrogates are back on the campaign trail today, marking National Voter Registration Day by barnstorming battleground states to raise awareness of voter registration deadlines and to discuss the high stakes of the November election. With important voter registration deadlines coming up soon, Hillary for America is capitalizing on today’s national day of action by organizing nearly 1,400 local voter registration events in communities across the country.

Every election, millions of Americans don’t get to cast their ballot because they missed their state’s registration deadline or didn’t know how to register. Hillary for America will build off the excitement from the debate to talk about importance of registering to vote ahead of registration deadlines by holding local voter registration events across the country.

“Last night, families across the country tuned into the first presidential debate and witnessed just how high the stakes are in this election. We’ve always said that this race would be won in the states, and with just six weeks to go, our ground game will be registering voters in communities across the country.” said Marlon Marshall, Hillary for America Director of State Campaigns and Political Engagement.

Started by young organizers, National Voter Registration Day is a day of action celebrated by thousands of organizations, businesses, local communities and celebrities to make sure that no one is left out on election day. Every election, millions of Americans don’t get to cast their ballot because they missed their state’s registration deadline or didn’t know how to register. Today, Hillary for America will join thousands of organizations, businesses, local communities and celebrities in working to raise awareness about voter registration deadlines.

Hillary for America will mark National Voter Registration day by continuing its ‘3 Million Stronger’ push to register or commit to vote 3 million voters. At voter registration events across the country and through digital activity – and campaign will be reminding people to make sure they’re ready to make their voice heard this election by visiting iwillvote.com to check their voter registration status or get registered to vote.

Hillary Clinton will also take that message on the road, campaigning in four battleground states in the four days coming out of the debate: Raleigh, North Carolina on Tuesday, Durham, New Hampshire on Wednesday, Des Moines, Iowa on Thursday and southern Florida on Friday. Today, Senator Tim Kaine will campaign in Florida and Vice President Joe Biden will campaign in Philadelphia. President Bill Clinton will travel to Ohio and starts his bus tour in Florida on Friday. First Lady Michelle Obama will campaign in Philadelphia and Pittsburgh on Wednesday. Chelsea Clinton will visit in North Carolina on Wednesday and Wisconsin on Friday, and Anne Holton will campaign in Michigan on today and Wednesday, in Iowa on Thursday and Wisconsin and Friday

Clinton Interviewed by Steve Harvey

On Tuesday, Hillary Clinton was interviewed by Steve Harvey on an episode his radio show, “The Steve Harvey Morning Show.” During the interview, Clinton was asked about the recent shooting by police of an unarmed black man in Tulsa, Oklahoma. Clinton responded to the death of Terence Crutcher by asking, “How many times do we have to see this in our country?” She continued by speaking about the importance of proper police training saying, “There are good, honorable, cool-headed police officers. … We can do better. We have got to rein in what is absolutely inexplicable, and we’ve got to have law enforcement respect communities and communities respect law enforcement because they have to work together.” Download the full interview HERE.

STEVE HARVEY: Okay, well here we go. Joining me now – this is what I’ve been waiting on – is a dynamic Democratic Party candidate for the presidency of the United States. She served as the 67th United States Secretary of State from 2009 to 2013. She was born right here in Chicago, Illinois. Woohoo. Chi-town girl. She is a former First Lady of the United States. Who got that title? […] She’s a mother, she’s a grandmother, and we’re going to put her back in the White House, just flat out. Simply put.

STEVE HARVEY: Nothing else will do. Please welcome to the show Mrs. Hillary Diane Rodham Clinton.

HILLARY CLINTON: Oh, Steve, hello!

SHIRLEY STRAWBERRY: Good morning.

HILLARY CLINTON: Hey, good morning, everybody.

STEVE HARVEY: How you doing?

HILLARY CLINTON: It’s so good to hear your voice.

STEVE HARVEY: You know what? I had you on my talk show, it was great there, and I told you I was going to get behind you and be a full supporter, and we’ve done just that – just that.

HILLARY CLINTON: Well, I really appreciate it because I know that you understand how high the stakes are in this election. It doesn’t get any higher, and we need everybody to get out and register and then vote because we’ve got to keep our country on the right track, and that’s under threat right now.

STEVE HARVEY: Yeah. Yeah, it absolutely is. Hey, we’re going to get into that right now. Now, let me ask you something kind of personal, though.

HILLARY CLINTON: Okay.

STEVE HARVEY: You and I are now both grandparents.

HILLARY CLINTON: Yes, just you and me.

STEVE HARVEY: Yeah, yeah, yeah. Yeah, we’re grandparents right now.

HILLARY CLINTON: Yes.

STEVE HARVEY: I’ve been struggling with what I want the grandkids to call me. I’ve already pitched one; Marjorie kind of shut it down. She is “Nana.” They call her “Nana.”

HILLARY CLINTON: Okay.

STEVE HARVEY: I wanted the grandkids to call me “Big Pimpin’.” [Laughter.] That got shot down.

HILLARY CLINTON: Yes, I’m with Marjorie on this one. [Laughter.]

STEVE HARVEY: Yeah, okay. Well, y’all women are always sticking together. So I got shot down, so I’m down to “Papa.”

HILLARY CLINTON: Yes, that’s —

STEVE HARVEY: What does your granddaughter Charlotte call you? What does she call you?

HILLARY CLINTON: Well, she calls me “Grandma” and she calls Bill “Pop-pop.”

STEVE HARVEY: “Pop-pop,” that’s cool.

HILLARY CLINTON: Yes.

STEVE HARVEY: That’s pretty cool.

HILLARY CLINTON: Yes.

STEVE HARVEY: And are you enjoying being a grandparent?

HILLARY CLINTON: Oh, it is the best thing in my life by such a country mile. There’s no comparison. I am so happy whenever I even get a picture or FaceTime and, oh, my gosh, if I get to see them. It just is transformational, Steve. I mean, there’s nothing like it.

STEVE HARVEY: Yeah, yeah.

HILLARY CLINTON: And really – it’s really about the future. I mean, you look at these little kids and you just want to hold them and protect them and love them and guide them, and you just want the country they’re growing up in to be everything it should be and the world to be peaceful and prosperous. I mean, it really does trigger all of these very deep thoughts when you’re around your kids.

STEVE HARVEY: Yeah. You know what? I would imagine that’s really what’s at stake here in this election. It’s really about the future and – but it’s also about right now. And what’s shaking us up in this whole candidacy is we’ve got to get America to understand exactly what you’re about here. And you do want what’s best for the country. How do you see this election going right now? Because you’re gaining momentum now because you – you had to take a short break for a minute because you were ill.

HILLARY CLINTON: That’s right.

STEVE HARVEY: And how is your health now? First of all, let me ask you that.

HILLARY CLINTON: It’s great. Thanks for asking. And yes, I’m back on the campaign trail.

STEVE HARVEY: Okay, so good. What separates you from Donald Trump? Let me ask you.

HILLARY CLINTON: Oh, my gosh. Can I have the whole hour? [Laughter.]

SHIRLEY STRAWBERRY: Take your time.

HILLARY CLINTON: I think it really comes down to our visions and our values. I have a vision where we continue to pursue equality and justice and opportunity for everybody, and that’s how I was raised. My mom had a really neglected life and yet she was able to, through the kindness of literally strangers, not her own family but teachers and others, to become a warm and loving parent and not be bitter; and my church, which gave me a lot of food for thought as they tried to make sure that I didn’t take any of my blessings for granted and understood to whom much is given much is required.

And then I was so fortunate because when I was in law school I met Marian Wright Edelman, who was the first African American woman to pass the Mississippi bar. She went down there and started working on behalf of kids and families, and she was close to Dr. King, she was close to Bobby Kennedy, and she formed the Children’s Defense Fund, and that gave me the opportunity to really see what we need to do – because I believe you’ve got to change both laws and hearts. We’ve got to change laws to protect people, to protect everything about them, and we’ve got to be a clear and loud voice for our society being what it should be: the city on the hill, striving for the more perfect union. And that’s my view, and I don’t think that’s how my opponent sees it.

When I went to defend young black kids put into adult jails in South Carolina, or went to Alabama undercover to expose racist segregated academies, or when I worked to get kids with disabilities the education they deserved, or stood up for women around the world who are often the last fed and ignored and marginalized, and everything that I believe in I want to bring to the White House. I want to build on the progress that President Obama has made during a very tumultuous time.

I mean, I’m appalled that Donald Trump will not apologize to the President and to the country for spending years questioning his citizenship and attempting to delegitimize him. And President Obama and Michelle Obama, they’ve kept their heads high. Like Michelle says, when they go low, we go high. And we’ve got to stay high. We’ve got to stay focused. And I know what we can do together to deal with more good jobs with rising incomes, making college affordable. I’ve got a plan for historically black colleges and universities because I value their work so much. And we’ve got to tackle systemic racism – this horrible shooting again. How many times do we have to see this in our country? In Tulsa, an unarmed man with his hands in the air? I mean, this is just unbearable, and it needs to be intolerable.

And so maybe I can, by speaking directly to white people, say, look, this is not who we are. We’ve got to do everything possible to improve policing, to go right at implicit bias. There are good, honorable, cool-headed police officers. We have seen them in action in New York over the last 48 hours because of the terrorist attacks. We can do better. We have got to rein in what is absolutely inexplicable. And we have got to have law enforcement respect communities and communities respect law enforcement because they have to work together.

So I have a big agenda.

STEVE HARVEY: I want to say this to you. You’re speaking right now from your heart because this was not a prompted question about what happened on Friday to this gentleman. Nobody – I didn’t ask you any questions about HBCUs. I didn’t ask you the information that you know. This is a person that’s speaking from her heart. This is truly on the inside of you. This is what people have got to know about Hillary Clinton, that this is coming from within you. This isn’t prepped, started up. And we’re – that’s one thing we’re really looking for these debates on Monday because there will be no chance for everybody to get prepped. You will be and see pointblank from the heart of a person and mind what they really think and feel because there will be no teleprompting. You can’t fix it. I think Monday, Monday, we will see the real difference between these two candidates. And I think it will be a glaring difference.

HILLARY CLINTON: Well, I’ll tell you I am going to do my very best to communicate as clearly and – and fearlessly as I can in the face of the insults and the attacks and the bullying and bigotry that we’ve seen coming from my opponent. I can take it, Steve. I can take that kind of stuff. I’ve been at this. And I understand it’s a contact sport. But I’m not going to take what he says about everybody else –

STEVE HARVEY: Right.

HILLARY CLINTON: – his attacks on African Americans and immigrants and Muslims and women and people with disabilities.

STEVE HARVEY: Yes. There you go.

HILLARY CLINTON: It’s just –

STEVE HARVEY: There you go.

HILLARY CLINTON: It’s just something we cannot tolerate. And that’s why it’s so important for you and for everyone who has a platform in our country right now to really stand up and say, “This is not who we are.” And it’s important that all your – your listeners and your viewers on TV realize they cannot stay on the sidelines.

STEVE HARVEY: Right.

HILLARY CLINTON: Every issue they care about is at stake in this election. This is not, oh, a little here, a little there. We can – we can take it, no matter who wins. No. The next 50 days will determine the next 50 years. And I say that –

STEVE HARVEY: Wow.

HILLARY CLINTON: – absolutely seriously. And so I hope that everybody is encouraged to be sure you’re registered to vote. It’s simple. If you go to a site called iwillvote.com and enter your information, you can find out are you registered, where do you go to register because I need you. I need you –

STEVE HARVEY: Yeah.

HILLARY CLINTON: – people who believe as we believe and what we need to be doing in our country to make it better and make it fairer. We’ve got to stand up and be counted in this election.

STEVE HARVEY: Hey, let me tell you something. Ms. Clinton, you – you have our word here on The Morning Show we are going to see this thing through. We are pushing real hard for voter registration. The polls are not counting the right people. The polls are not counting all of us. And we are very well-aware of that. We supported President Obama. We heard his plea at the caucus meeting, what would mean the most to him if we got behind you. We’re not going to let you down. Be well on Monday. Be aggressive. If you say what you just said today, we’re going to hit it over the wall. But we’re behind you, Ms. Clinton.

HILLARY CLINTON: Yes.

STEVE HARVEY: And we wish you nothing but the best. But, more than that, we are going to the polls, and we are going to vote. Thank you so much.

HFA Response To Trump’s New Ad

In response to Donald Trumps new campaign ad focusing on Hillary Clinton’s comments about Trump’s supporters, Hillary for America Deputy Communications Director Christina Reynolds released the following statement and response:

“As we’ve come to expect, Donald Trump gets quite a bit wrong in his new TV ad, ignoring Hillary Clinton’s comments that she did not mean half of his supporters were deplorable and her reference to the economic concerns of many of his supporters. That said, if he’d like to argue against Hillary’s claim that people who are racist, sexist, homophobic, xenophobic or Islamophobic are deplorable, we are happy to have that debate. Trump has spent the entire campaign offering divisive views that have given rise to far too much hatred and bigotry—Hillary Clinton and Tim Kaine will continue to call that out.”

Clinton Calls for Passage of the Miners Protection Act

Hillary Clinton released a statement on Thursday calling for the passage of the the bipartisan Miners Protection Act, a bill sponsored by Senators Shelley Moore Capito (R-WV) and Joe Manchin (D-WV). The plan would rescue the pension offered by the United Mine Workers (UMW) and ensure that retired miners continue to receive their benefits. UMW will be on Capitol Hill on Thursday to gather support for the bill. In her statement, Clinton expresses her support of the act saying that it will ensure that miners receive the benefits they have earned. A copy of Clinton’s statement is below.

“I firmly believe that if you spent your life keeping the lights on for our country, we can’t leave you in the dark. For more than a century, America’s coal miners have put their own health and safety at risk to provide affordable and reliable energy for the nation. They are entitled to the benefits they have earned and the respect they deserve.

That’s why I am proud to stand with Senator Joe Manchin and the United Mine Workers of America in calling on Congressional Republicans to stop playing politics and give the Miners Protection Act a vote before the benefits of these hardworking men and women start expiring later this year.

We also have a shared responsibility to reinvest in the coal communities that have been an engine of American economic growth. That’s why last fall, I proposed a comprehensive revitalization and job creation plan including building 21st-century infrastructure and high-speed broadband, repurposing abandoned minelands and power plants to support new economic activity, and creating a Coal Communities Challenge Fund to support locally-driven economic development priorities in small business, agriculture, health care, tourism, housing, and other industries.

And we need to invest in carbon capture and sequestration, which will reduce emissions from coal and natural gas combustion, and will help us meet the global climate challenge more quickly and at lower cost, according to the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change. That’s why I support Senator Heidi Heitkamp and Senator Sheldon Whitehouse’s Carbon Capture Utilization and Storage Act, which Senator Kaine has also co-sponsored.”

Throughout her campaign, Hillary Clinton has stood up for the healthcare and retirement security of American miners and their families and challenged attempts by coal companies, including Patriot Coal, Peabody Energy, Alpha Natural Resources, and Walter Energy to use bankruptcy courts to shirk their responsibilities.

While under pressure some of these companies have since reversed course, a federal backstop is required to protect coal miners, their families, and their communities. Hillary Clinton has called for such a backstop as part of her plan to revitalize coal communities.

Hillary for America Communications Director Jennifer Palmieri released the following statement reacting to Donald Trump’s plan to deport undocumented immigrants:

“Donald Trump reinforced today that he would deport 16 million people, including every undocumented immigrant and American citizens born here to undocumented parents.  Confirming what we’ve seen from the start of his campaign: Donald Trump will be Donald Trump. No one can change his hateful rhetoric or dangerous policies to send a deportation force into American communities, rescind DACA and DAPA, end birthright citizenship, and even ban remittances to families in Mexico in order to help build his giant wall. He may try to disguise his plans by throwing in words like “humane”  or ” fair,” but the reality remains that Trump’s agenda echoes the extreme right’s will–one that is fueling a dangerous movement of hatred across the country.

Enough is enough. Donald Trump must stop playing games with the lives of law-abiding immigrant families in order to save his campaign. These are families who contribute to the greatness of our country and that need a President who will fight to keep them together–not someone who will denigrate them and tear them apart.”

Clinton Criticizes Trump’s Extreme Views in Reno Speech

Hillary Clinton sharply criticized the extreme views of Donald Trump during a speech in Reno, Nevada today. Clinton said that Trump is “taking hate groups mainstream” with his hateful rhetoric. She blamed him for allowing the extreme right take over the Republican Party. “From the start, Donald Trump has built his campaign on prejudice and paranoia. He’s taking hate groups mainstream and helping a radical fringe take over one of America’s two major political parties. His disregard for the values that make our country great is profoundly dangerous,” Clinton said.

Hillary for America also released a report outlining how Trump has given “Alt-Right” groups the control of the Republican Party. The report takes several of Trump’s policy proposals in quotes into consideration. Hillary Clinton Proposes Rapid Response Fund to Fight Pandemics

Hillary Clinton proposed a new Public Health Rapid Response Fund to deal with pandemics such as Zika virus. Clinton has urged Congress to pass federal funding to assist areas infested with Zika carrying mosquitoes, but Congress has failed to do so. Clinton said that the fund would be available to assist “the CDC, HHS, FEMA, state and local public health departments, hospital systems, and other federal agencies” respond to any public health crisis. “The United States faces new threats to public health, from pandemic diseases like those caused by the Ebola and the Zika viruses, to the risk of biological weapons and bioterrorism, to long-term challenges like more extreme weather and expanding ranges for Lyme disease and water-borne illnesses as a result of climate change. And in a global economy, diseases like SARS, MERS, and avian influenza cannot be contained in their countries of origin.

“But despite these threats, we are not investing in public health preparedness and emergency response the way we should to keep our families and communities safe. A 2015 study found that spending on public health had fallen more than 9 percent since 2008. And uncertain long-term budgets leave our public health agencies dependent on emergency appropriations—meaning that when Congress fails to step up, communities are left without the resources they need, vaccines languish in development, and more people get sick.

That is why as President, I will create a Public Health Rapid Response Fund, with consistent, year-to-year budgets, to better enable the CDC, HHS, FEMA, state and local public health departments, hospital systems, and other federal agencies to quickly and aggressively respond to major public health crises and pandemics. I will also ensure that our government has strong leadership and is organized to better support and work with people on the ground facing public health challenges. Doctors and public health experts have been warning for months that the Zika virus was likely to reach the continental United States, but Congress has failed to pass the President’s emergency funding request. As a result, the Zika virus has gained a foothold in Miami, and 196 people have already been infected in the city—infections that may have been preventable. 

In addition, we need to do more to boost our preparedness for biological threats and bioweapons; to support research for new diagnostic tests, therapeutic treatments, and vaccines for emerging diseases; to build capacity in public health departments; to train the next cadre of public health professionals and ensure that public health and environmental health practices are standard to the educations of medical students; and to provide resources for states and local governments to plan for complex, multi-faceted public health threats, like the impacts of climate change, and build more resilient communities.”

Hillary Clinton Announces Plan to Boost Small Businesses

On Tuesday, Hillary Clinton announced a plan she would introduce as president to boost small businesses. She introduced her plan in an article for LinkedIn followed by a teleconference with members of the press and several small business owners. Clinton warned of Donald Trump’s past business practices with small businesses arguing that a Trump presidency would not be good for small business owners. The comprehensive plan builds on her overall economic plan which would create millions of jobs by investing in infrastructure upgrades and clean energy. Small businesses play into her overall plan as they will provide American workers and products. An outline of the plan is below and the full plan is available on The Briefing.

1. Make it easier to start a business and become profitable
   • Push states to make it faster and cheaper to start a business
   • Working with states to standardize licensing requirements
   • Making technical assistance and resources available to states
   • Provide incubators, mentoring, and training to 50,000 entrepreneurs and small business owners in underserved communities
2. Make it easier to get financing and find investors
   • Streamline regulation and cut red tape for community banks and credit unions
   • Harness the potential of online lending platforms
   • Reduce the burden of student debt by allowing entrepreneurs to defer student loan payment
   • Promote the 100% tax exclusion on capital gains for long-term small business investments
   • Expand and streamline the SBA’s Small Business Investment Company program
   • Support new innovative ways to assess creditworthiness for small business owners
   • Expand access to credit in underserved communities
   • Give the SBA administrator the authority to continue providing 7(a) loan guarantees to small businesses

   • Work to completely revamp the digital experience for small businesses
   • Use the leverage of more than $400 billion in federal government contracting to encourage businesses to pay their suppliers in full and on time
   • Guarantee a 24-hour response time to small businesses with questions about federal regulations and access to capital programs
   • Ensure that Small Business Development Centers are placed in the highest-need communities with staff that speaks the language of local residents
   • Work to ensure that federal regulations aren’t unnecessarily holding small businesses and our economy back
   • Increase federal contracting opportunities for women-owned, minority-owned, and veteran-owned small businesses
   • Defend and strengthen the Export-Import Bank
   • Encourage small business exports by expanding SBA funding for export development

Hillary Clinton Statement on Louisiana Flooding

On Monday, Hillary Clinton released a statement following devastating flooding in Louisiana that has claimed 13 lives and damaged tens of thousands of homes. She called on her supporters to donate to the Red Cross so that much needed supplies can be sent to the affected areas. Clinton also calls on Congress to pass funding to combat Zika virus as the flooding will likely breed mosquitoes. A copy of Clinton’s statement is below.

“This month’s floods in Louisiana are a crisis that demand a national response. More than 30,000 people have been rescued by the Coast Guard, National Guard, and other emergency responders. Thousands of people have lost everything. At least 13 lost their lives. We must make sure that all resources are brought to bear in responding to the crisis and helping communities rebuild.

That is why I have called on supporters of this campaign to give what they can to the Red Cross, to bring much-needed aid and supplies to the more than 100,000 people affected by the floods. We also need to make sure that this crisis is not compounded by another, by ensuring mosquito abatement is happening hand-in-hand with flood response, to reduce the risk of mosquitoes that could carry the Zika virus from gaining a foothold in Louisiana.
