Bill, Chelsea Return to Campaign Trail

On Sunday, Chelsea and Bill Clinton returned to the west coast to campaign for Hillary Clinton. In Arizona, Bill Clinton attended two Get Out the Vote rallies before Tuesday’s primary. The first rally was in Tuscon where he was joined by former Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords and her husband Mark Kelly. During Bill’s speech, he spoke about Hillary’s plans to enact common sense gun control and introduce required background checks when purchasing a firearm. He also spoke about immigration reform, which is a hot button issue in Arizona. Throughout his speech, he stressed the importance of the 2016 election and urged voters to support Hillary on Tuesday. Bill then attended a Get Out the Vote event in Phoenix. Speaking from Central High School, Bill addressed the national mood saying that he understands why people are angry, but we need to vote for someone who is going to make a difference and not someone who is full of rhetoric. Again, he touched on a number of key platform topics including immigration reform, health care, and economic equality. He concluded by asking for Arizona’s support on Tuesday, saying, “Needless to say, we had a pretty tough campaign eight years ago, and Arizona voted with us. I hope you will again on Tuesday.” A video of his speech is below.

Chelsea was in California where she attended three fundraisers. The first was held at the Los Angeles home of Elsa and Jarron Collins. The second event, hosted by Elsa Collins, featured a bicycle ride in West Hollywood. For the final event of the day, Chelsea was joined by actresses Lena Dunham and America Ferrera at NeueHouse Hollywood in Los Angeles.

Two additional fundraisers were held on Sunday. The first was a reception with Campaign Manager Robby Mook in Dallas, Texas. The fundraiser took place at the home of Jorge Baldor. In Seattle, Washington, a fundraiser was held at the home of Jen Lamson and Ric Ilgenfritz. The event, which was hosted by Jen Lamson, Marilyn Heiman, and Marilyn Twitchell, featured a special live musical performance by Sheryl Wiser.

Bill Clinton Campaigns for Hillary in Ohio

On Saturday, Bill Clinton campaigned on behalf on Hillary Clinton at three events across Ohio. Rallying crowds before this Tuesday’s primary, Clinton flew in to Portsmouth where he stopped for coffee and visited with local residents and kids from the Autism Project of Southern Ohio. He then went to his first rally in Cincinnati where he focused on Hillary’s plans to help those in Ohio and across the country. He said that she is the best presidential candidate to raise wages and break down racial, social, and economic barriers. He also took a shot at the Republican race for president saying it was like watching a “sixth-grade playground fight.”

This afternoon, Bill attended a rally in Akron where he cautioned the crowd in regards to the recent violence at a number rallies held by Republican front-runner, Donald Trump. Clinton referenced a conversation he once had with Nelson Mandela to make his point that anger and violence is not the answer to our problems. Mandela famously forgave those who imprisoned him in South Africa, but even he admitted there was a time when he hated them. Clinton said that Mandela told him, “I realized they could take everything from me except my mind and my heart. Those things I would have to give away. And I decided not to give them away. And then he looked at me and said ‘neither should you’.”

Clinton’s final event of the day was a Get Out the Vote rally in Toledo.  During the event the at University of Toledo, Clinton was joined by former Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords and her husband Mark Kelly. The focus of the conversation was gun violence and the need for strict background checks for all purchasers of firearms. Clinton said Hillary would stand up to the NRA and protect innocent victims of gun violence by ensuring that guns to do wind up in the wrong hands. Clinton Hosts Town Halls in Iowa

Yesterday, Hillary Rodham Clinton attended two town hall events in Iowa. The first was held in Coralville, where Clinton hosted an outdoor event on an unseasonably warm day. Clinton opened the event with remarks about several of her policy points including gun control. Clinton then answered a number of questions from those in attendance. She was asked about a variety of topics including the backlog at the Department of Veteran Affairs, tensions with China, and immigration. Clinton then went to Grinnell College in Grinnell. Clinton held a very similar event where, again, she proposed tougher gun regulations and taking the National Rifle Association. She said, “A majority of Americans and a majority of gun owners know we have to make the changes. What stands in the way? One of the most powerful lobbies in our country. The NRA, that intimidates and bullies legislators and governors into doing what they want. That must end.”

Clinton Meets with Gun Victims’ Families

While in Chicago yesterday, Hillary Rodham Clinton held a two-hour private meeting with the families of gun victims. Clinton met with the families and had a discussion about gun violence and her plans to prevent guns from getting into the wrong hands. She has called for universal background check and closing a number of loopholes that allows people to purchase guns, avoiding the current background check system. The Clinton campaign also released a 30-second ad (above) calling for the strengthening of gun regulations in the United States

Those attending yesterday’s meeting included: Lesley McSpadden, the mother of Michael Brown, who was shot and killed by a police officer in Ferguson, Missouri; relatives of Hadiya Pendleton, a fifteen-year-old who show mistakenly killed by a gang member in Chicago; Sabrina Fulton, the mother of Trayvon Martin who was shot and killed by George Zimmerman in Florida in 2012; the family of Jordan Davis, a seventeen-year-old killed last year in Florida; Samaria Rice, mother of Tamir Rice, a twelve-year-old Ohioan who was shot by an officer who mistook his pellet gun for a real weapon; and Joy McCormack, mother of Francisco “Frankie” Valencia, a DePaul University student killed by a gang member in 2009.

Clinton Hosts Iowa Events

On Tuesday, Hillary Rodham Clinton hosted two events in the key swing state of Iowa. She began the day at a community forum in Davenport. During the event, Clinton spoke about heath care saying that more needed to be done to give Iowans and Americans more affordable choices. She also spoke about gun control and called for background checks, reducing higher education costs, and fighting poverty. She also criticized Jeb Bush for his “stuff happens” comment in regards to the mass shooting in Oregon. Bush was campaigning nearby Bettendorf. After speaking briefly, Clinton took questions from the crowd. Videos from the event in Davenport are below.

Following the event, Clinton took the the streets in Davenport where she met with voters and went shopping in a local market. Later in the day, Clinton attended an organizing event at the Strawberry Farm Bed and Breakfast in Muscatine. Clinton, again, spoke about her plans as president, but she took a moment to talk about her Republican rivals and their difficulty naming any of her accomplishments as Secretary of State in the recent Republican debate. So, she sent them each a copy of her book! She said, “You know, I hear the Republicans talking from time to time in their debates and elsewhere and they say things like, ‘Oh, I don’t know what she accomplished as Secretary of State. She didn’t accomplish anything.’ I listened to that for a while. And then I thought maybe they just don’t know, so I have now sent each of them a copy of my book, Hard Choices, about what we did during those four years.” She joked that there are enough candidates running on the Republican ticket that they could start a book club. She then went on to discuss a number of her accomplishments at the State Department.
