Hillary Clinton Launches Onward Together

On Monday, Hillary Clinton announced her next project: a political group called Onward Together. Clinton announced Onward Together on Twitter and in an email blast to her supporters. In the email, Clinton said, “From the Women’s March to airports across the country where communities are welcoming immigrants and refugees to town hall meetings in every community, Americans are speaking out like never before. I believe more fiercely than ever that citizen engagement at every level is central to a strong and vibrant democracy.”

Visiting the website for Onward Together allows supporters to sign up for updates, donate, and read the mission of the newly created group. The mission statement is below:

Onward Together is dedicated to advancing the vision that earned nearly 66 million votes in the last election. By encouraging people to organize, get involved, and run for office, Onward Together will advance progressive values and work to build a brighter future for generations to come.

Citizen engagement at every level is central to a strong and vibrant democracy. In recent months, we’ve seen what’s possible when people come together to resist bullying, hate, falsehoods, and divisiveness, and stand up for a fairer, more inclusive America.

From the Women’s March to airports where communities are welcoming immigrants and refugees to town hall meetings in every community, Americans are speaking up and speaking out like never before.

The challenges we face as a country are real. But there’s no telling what we can achieve if we approach the fights ahead with the passion and determination we feel today, and bring that energy into 2017, 2018, 2020, and beyond.

Hillary Clinton Condemns Trump’s Immigration Ban

After President Donald Trump signed an executive order suspending the entry of refugees and blocking entry of immigrants from seven predominantly Muslim countries, Hillary Clinton tweeted that the order “is not who we are.” The order was signed on Friday and blocks the entry of refugees from all countries for 90 days, but bars Syrian refugees indefinitely. The immigration ban in the order applies to seven countries: Iran, Iraq, Libya, Somalia, Sudan, Syria, and Yemen. The ban has been condemned by US officials, members of Congress from both parties, the international community, and many in the public with demonstrations being held at major airports. On Saturday, a federal judge halted the deportation of immigrants and refugees who were detained at US airports after the ACLU sued the Trump administration.

Meanwhile, Clinton attended a fundraising event at Columbia University in New York on Wednesday. The event was held to raise money for cancer research. The two primary researchers at the university are themselves immigrants: Dr. Azra Raza is from Pakistan and Dr. Siddhartha Mukherjee is from India. The executive order has been condemned by the scientific community because it could block researchers from entering the United States to continue or begin new research. While the federal judge did block some deportations, many of the order’s provisions remain in effect.

Hillary Clinton Endorsed by Transport Workers Union

On Wednesday, Hillary Clinton received the endorsement of the Transport Workers Union of America. In a statement, the union said that they endorsed Clinton because of her “dedication to ensuring working people have a voice against corporate America and her plan to invest billions in the country’s infrastructure.” Clinton released a statement saying that she is honored to have earned the union’s endorsement and, as president, she will fight to ensure the rights of unions and work to improve the country’s infrastructure. A copy of Clinton’s statement is below:

“I am honored to have earned the endorsement of the Transport Workers Union.

Every day, members of the TWU keep America on the move—driving our buses and trains, flying our planes, and keeping our communities safe and healthy. For decades, transport workers have helped power our economy and keep families connected. And along the way, they’ve helped build the American middle class, standing up for workers’ rights and fighting for the respect they deserve.

As President, I will always stand with the TWU in the fight to protect workers’ fundamental rights to organize, bargain collectively, be safe on the job, and retire with dignity and security after years of hard work. We will make the kinds of investments that grow the economy for everyone, including building 21st century roads, transit systems, and airports. In my first 100 days in office, I will put forward a plan to make the most ambitious investments in our infrastructure since the Interstate Highway System. And I will make sure workers always have a seat at the table and a champion in the White House.”

Hillary Clinton Campaigns in Buena Park and Salinas

Hillary Clinton campaigned in California on Wednesday. Her first event was held in Buena Park where she addressed a crowd of supporters at UFCW Union Local 324. After being introduced by actress Jamie Lee Curtis, Clinton spoke about the importance of unity and how she is direct opposition to Republican nominee Donald Trump’s tenancy to divide people. She, again, spoke about the benefit of building bridges instead of walls when working out national issues. She said, “He is scapegoating everyone. That’s good for reality TV. But you’ve got to work with people.” She went on to speak about a number of her platform points including continuing to work to improve health care and bringing down the cost of higher education before asking for voters’ support on June 7.

Clinton also outlined her proposal to rebuild the nations infrastructure. She vowed to implement the plan during her first 100 days in office. The plan includes provisions that will:

  • Deliver the most significant increase in infrastructure investment since President Eisenhower built the Interstate Highway System
  • Connect every household in America to affordable broadband and lead the world into next-generation wireless
  • Develop transportation technology of tomorrow
  • Make America the clean energy superpower of the 21st century with a cleaner, smarter, and more resilient electric grid
  • Eliminate the chose points of commerce
  • Revitalize public schools in every ZIP code and invest in communities being left out and left behind
  • Build American airports that are the envy of the world
  • Leverage private capital through public-private partnerships and ensure that taxpayer dollars are put to good use

Clinton then spoke at an organizing event in Salinas. Speaking at Hartnell College, she focused on working with Congress to pass comprehensive immigration reform. She argued that the United States is better served welcoming immigrants than working to keep them out. Again, she attacked Trump for his plans to build a wall along the border between the United States and Mexico. Clinton did discuss a number of other platform points before asking for voter’s support in the California primary.

Clinton Brings Infrastructure Plan to Iowa

On Friday, Hillary Clinton held an event in Sioux City, Iowa in which she focused on her infrastructure plans. Speaking at the Carpenters Local 948 Training Center, Clinton said her plan would focus on airports, sea ports, broadband internet, and highways and would create thousands pf jobs across the country. Of our current infrastructure, she said, “The infrastructure is old, it is broken down. My image is, it is held together with duct tape.” Before her speech, Clinton was introduced and endorsed by U.S. Secretary of Labor Tom Perez. Also speaking at the event in support of Clinton was state Representative Chris Hall. A full video of Clinton’s speech is below.
