Clinton Speaks at Planned Parenthood Gala

Hillary Clinton spoke at the Planned Parenthood 100th Anniversary Gala in New York City on Tuesday night. During her speech, Clinton argued that women’s health care is important and warned that the Donald Trump administration and Republican administrations across the country are taking away women’s health care by closing Planned Parenthood clinics and cutting funding. She said, “As we speak, politicians in Washington are still doing everything they can to roll back the rights and progress we’ve fought so hard for over the last century.” Clinton acknowledged the controversy surrounding Planned Parenthood and abortion rights, and she said that everyone has a right to their personal feelings, but the government should not take away anyone’s right to control their body. “Let us respect people’s convictions. But never back down from our commitment to defend the ability of every woman to make these deeply personal decisions for herself. The Choice is Clear: Hillary Will Fight For Women While Trump Belittles and Bullies Them

Hillary Clinton has been breaking new  ground and fighting for women her entire career. Before she made history becoming the first female nominee of a major party for president, Hillary led the U.S delegation to the U.N Fourth World Conference on Women in Beijing, where she proclaimed that “women’s rights are human rights.” As a senator from New York, she championed the Paycheck Fairness Act to help close the pay gap between women and men.

As President, Hillary will build on her record of fighting for women because although there has been tremendous strides when it comes to expanding opportunities for women there’s still much more work to be done. Donald Trump, however, has a very different record — he has spent his life, and this campaign, demeaning women.

Throughout this campaign, we’ve seen many examples of Trump’s alarming words and deeds towards women like his revolting comments on a bus caught on tape, his repeated behavior insulting and degrading women who stood up to him, his bragging about walking in on nude pageant contestants, some of whom were apparently under aged, his jokes objectifying women, and more.

It’s clear Trump’s dangerous proposals would take us backwards.  Over the course of the campaign, we’ve watched Trump dismiss women in the workplace and say that women who choose to have abortions should be “punished.”

Trump’s policies on women and dangerous rhetoric  have demonstrated he is unfit to be President of the United States. With one week left of the presidential campaign, here is a recap of  Trump’s history of belittling and bullying women:

MISOGYNISTIC AND OFFENSIVE RHETORIC

Trump has talked disparagingly about women — calling them pigs and rating their bodies on a 1 to 10 scale.  From his revolting nicknames to his lewd comments, Trump’s rhetoric about women is inexcusable.

• Trump: referred to a pageant contestant as “Miss Piggy” and “Miss Housekeeping,” and then doubled down years later saying “she gained a massive amount of weight.”
• Trump on Carly Fiorina: “Look at that face! … Would anyone vote for that? Can you imagine that, the face of our next president?!”
• Trump: “A person who is flat-chested is very hard to be a 10,” he told Howard Stern.
• Trump: “But whenever she sees me, she kisses my ass. She’s disgusting.”
• Trump: “There’s a lot of women out there that demand that the husband act like the wife.”
• Trump: “And when you’re a star, they let you do it. You can do anything.”
• Trump: “[I]t doesn’t really matter what [the media] write as long as you’ve got a young and beautiful piece of ass
• Trump: It is “rare” that women are both “very beautiful” and have high IQs
• Trump: “Did you see that woman? She had an amazing body, but a schoolmarm’s face”
• Trump on women:  “You have to treat ‘em like shit.’”
• Trump on Hillary Clinton: “Do you think she looks presidential? I don’t think so”

WRONG ON WOMEN IN THE WORKPLACE

Donald Trump has a long history of demeaning women in the workplace and has said that “putting a wife to work is a very dangerous thing” – so it’s no surprise that he has a bad record when it comes to hiring women and supporting equal pay.

• Trump’s campaign staff was 75 percent men.
• Trump’s campaign paid women less than men.
• When Trump was asked why his campaign paid women less than men, he replied that in his business salaries were based on “talent.”
• Trump’s public companies have had very few women in senior roles: only 6 of 59 of Trump’s casino executives were women.
• Trump to a young women asking about equal pay: “You’re going to make the same if you do as good a job”
• Trump on what employing mothers can mean for a business: “She’s not giving one hundred percent, she’s giving me eighty-four percent”
• Trump said pregnancy was an “inconvenience” for employers
• Trump called a working mother “disgusting” for requesting a break to go pump breast milk
• Trump claimed to offer childcare for his employees, but it was actually a program for resort guests

WRONG ON REPRODUCTIVE FREEDOM

Donald Trump opposes basic reproductive rights and even said he believes women should be subject to “punishment” for having an abortion.

• Trump on whether women should be punished for having abortions: “There has to be some form of punishment”
• Trump would appoint Supreme Court justices who would overturn Roe v. Wade “automatically” if he’s elected
• Trump called for shutting down the government to defund Planned Parenthood
• Trump called requiring contraceptive coverage in the Affordable Care Act “very bad.”

MINIMIZING PROBLEM OF SEXUAL HARASSMENT

Trump’s preferred way of talking about women appears to extend into the Trump Organization as well, spurring a raft of discrimination and harassment lawsuits against Trump and his companies.

• At least 20 lawsuits accused Trump and his companies of discriminating against women, ignoring sexual harassment or participating in harassment
• Two former Trump employees allege they were fired after complaining about harassment at work
• One former Trump employee says she was fired for complainingabout discrimination after she became pregnant
• Trump suggested women who were sexually harassed should find another job
• On sexual assault in the military, Trump said “what did these geniuses expect when they put men and women together”

UNDER FIRE FOR SEXUAL MISCONDUCT

Trump has bragged about sexually assaulting women and suggests that his determination of whether or not a woman is worth assaulting is based on their attractiveness.

• Trump bragged about sexually assaulting women
• Trump claimed to be the victim but multiple women say Trump’s words match his behavior
• Twelve women have publicly accused Trump of sexual assault
• Trump said the sexual assault described on tape was just “locker room talk“
• Trump lashed out at women accusing him of sexual assault and said his accusers were not attractive enough to assault
• Trump said his accusers were “sick” and coming forward for fame or money
• Trump promised to sue his accusers

Clinton, Trump Clash on Policy at Final Debate

On Wednesday night, presidential candidates Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump faced off for their final debate before the election on November 8th. The debate was moderated by Fox News’ Chris Wallace, who did a pretty good job of keeping the candidates on topic. The topics covered at the debate included debt, entitlements, immigration, the economy, the Supreme Court, foreign hot spots, and “fitness to be president.” While each candidate took shots at each other, Clinton outlined a number of her proposals. Each candidate wrapped up the final debate with a one-minute closing statement. Clinton asked for America’s vote saying:

“Well, I would like to say to everyone watching tonight that I’m reaching out to all Americans — Democrats, Republicans, and Independents. Because we need everybody to help make our country what it should be. To grow the economy, to make it fairer, to make it work for everyone. We need your talents, your skills, your commitment, your energy, your ambition. You know, I’ve been privileged to see the presidency up close and I know the awesome responsibility of protecting our country and the incredible opportunity of working to try to make life better for all of you. I have made the cause of children and families really my life’s work — that’s what my mission will be in the presidency. I will stand up for families against powerful interests, against corporations. I will do everything I can to make sure you have good jobs with rising incomes, that your kids have good educations from preschool through college. I hope you will give me a chance to serve as your president.”

While pundits will argue who won and who lost last night’s debate, what is important is who you feel will best represent you. This political cycle has become more about personality and less about the issues at stake. Both candidates have outlined a series of policies they believe are important to them and that says a lot about their beliefs. What is key is that on November 8, you have a choice. You have a voice at the ballot box and make sure it is heard. Vote.

Clinton Will Appoint Supreme Court Justices Who Affirm Our Rights, While Trump’s Justices Will Roll Rights Back

The fourth topic for tonight’s debate is the Supreme Court. America’s next president could nominate multiple Supreme Court justices and the stakes could not be higher. Appointments made in the next four years could determine the makeup of the Court for decades to come. Hillary Clinton will appoint justices who will affirm the dignity and equality of all Americans. In contrast, Donald Trump will appoint justices who will roll back hard-fought rights.

*Considering Trump has been involved in more than 4,000 lawsuits, he should know this is not how the justice system works.

Hillary Clinton will appoint justices to the Supreme Court who will protect the constitutional principles of liberty and equality for all, and make sure Roe v. Wade remains the law of the land and women retain the right to make their own deeply personal healthcare decisions. Hillary will make sure the scales of justice aren’t tipped away from individuals toward corporations and special interests. And she will protect citizens’ right to vote, rather than billionaires’ right to buy elections.

Donald Trump has demonstrated his desire to appoint justices who would roll back rights Americans have fought for over decades. As president, Trump will:

• Appoint justices who would overturn Roe v. Wade.
• Appoint justices who would overturn the Supreme Court’s decision on marriage equality.
• Appoint justices who would weaken the Affordable Care Act.
• Consider justices with a history of supporting restrictive voter ID laws.
• Consider the heritage of an American citizen when evaluating fitness to serve as a federal judge.
• Pursue policies that ignore cornerstone constitutional principles, including imposing a religious test on immigrants; profiling U.S. Muslims; registering all Muslims in a “database”; punishing women for having an abortion; nationalizing New York City’s old stop-and-frisk policy; shutting down religious institutions; “open up those libel laws”; and retroactively repealing birthright citizenship.

Hillary Clinton Statement on Texas Abortion Restrictions Supreme Court Ruling

On Monday, the Supreme Court struck down laws in the state of Texas that severely limit women’s access to abortion clinics. In a 5-3 decision, the court declared the laws unconstitutional (Whole Woman’s Health v. Hellerstedt). In a statement, Hillary Clinton called the decision “a victory for women across America.” She warned, however, that the fight is far from over as there are many other states trying to limit women’s health. A copy of Clinton’s statement is below:

“The Supreme Court’s decision in Whole Woman’s Health v. Hellerstedt is a victory for women across America. By striking down politically motivated restrictions that made it nearly impossible for Texans to exercise their full reproductive rights, the Court upheld every woman’s right to safe, legal abortion, no matter where she lives. 

I applaud everyone who flooded the Texas Capitol to speak out against these attacks on women’s health, the brave women and men across the country who shared their stories, and the health care providers who fought for their patients and refused to give up.

Our fight is far from over. In Texas and across the country, a woman’s constitutional right to make her own health decisions is under attack. In the first three months of 2016, states introduced more than 400 measures restricting access to abortion. We’ve seen a concerted, persistent attack on women’s health and rights at the federal level. Meanwhile, Donald Trump has said women should be punished for having abortions.  He also pledged to defund Planned Parenthood and appoint Supreme Court justices who would overturn Roe v. Wade.

Today’s decision is a reminder of how much is at stake in this election. We need a President who will defend women’s health and rights and appoint Supreme Court justices who recognize Roe v. Wade as settled law. We must continue to protect access to safe and legal abortion – not just on paper, but in reality.”

Hillary Clinton Speaks at Planned Parenthood Event

On Friday, Hillary Clinton gave her speech since becoming the first female presidential candidate to secure the nomination of a major political party. Speaking at the Planned Parenthood Action Fund Membership Event in Washington, DC, Clinton went after Republican Donald Trump for his comments on women and women’s rights. She thanked the organization for all the work they do for women and said that it is vital to keep sex education, access to contraceptives, and access to abortion available to everyone. She said, “We know that restricting access doesn’t make women less likely to end a pregnancy. It just makes abortion less safe.  And that then threatens women’s lives.” A full video of Clinton’s speech is below.

Hillary Clinton Holds Four Events in California

On Saturday, Hillary Clinton attended four campaign events in California. The first event of the day was a community discussion in Slymar. The primary topic of the event was immigration reform. Clinton said that immigration is going to be a key issue in the 2016 election because statements about immigrants made by Republican nominee Donald Trump are often “hateful, very prejudicial, really unacceptable ways.” She spoke about the importance of keeping families together and passing comprehensive immigration reform. Most of the event was Clinton listening to stories told by the several Asian and Latino immigrants. She vowed to fight for a fair immigration plan if elected president.

Clinton then traveled to Oxnard where she spoke to supporters at a Get Out the Vote event. She covered a number of her platform points, but she went after Trump several times throughout the speech saying that he “fails” a number of important presidential trait tests. Clinton said that the 2016 election is very important to ensure the country continues to move forward with health care, the economy, clean energy, and climate change. She concluded by asking voters’ to support her in Tuesday’s primary. A video of Clinton’s speech is below.

Later, Clinton traveled to Santa Barbara where she held a community event focused on women and families. The round table discussion consisted of local officials and representatives. Clinton spoke about a number of her platform points aimed at improving the lives of women and helping families. She spoke about increasing the minimum wage, ensuring that women receive equal pay for equal work, ensuring families have access to affordable childcare, and guaranteeing workers paid family leave. After Clinton’s remarks, she listened to the concerns of several people in attendance. A video from the event is below.

The final event of the day was a Get Out the Vote rally in Fresno where she spoke to packed crowd of supporters at Edison High School. While she criticized Trump on a number of occasions, Clinton covered a number of her key platform points including early childhood education, clean energy, abortion rights, marriage equality, immigration reform, and making higher education more affordable. She also spoke about an issue that is local to Fresno: water. The city has seen water shortages due to the recent droughts in the area and she said, “If I am fortunate enough to be your president, we are going to work on water and we are going to get this fixed.” A video from the event will be added when/if available.

Hillary Clinton Interviewed by CNN, Attends Events in IN, MI

On Sunday, Hillary Clinton returned to the campaign trail visiting Indiana and Michigan. Her first appearance of the day was in a taped interview on this morning’s State of the Union on CNN. During her interview with Jake Tapper, Clinton refused to call herself the presumptive nominee for the Democratic nomination saying that while she was ahead, there is still work to be done. She also said that she would be willing to work with rival Bernie Sanders in building a progressive platform for the Democratic Party going forward. A video of the full interview is below.

Clinton began her public events today in Indianapolis, Indiana where she spoke at an organizing event. She focused on the importance of the 2016 election and how it will affect key policies and the Supreme Court going forward. Clinton spoke about her manufacturing plans saying, “Indiana has so much potential for the future and I want it to be part of the kind of positive, confident future I’m offering in this election.” Clinton went on to criticize Indiana Governor Mike Pence and the Republican controlled General Assembly for placing strict restriction on abortion access and the passage of a right-to-work law. She said, “I worry very much, and I don’t mean this to be partisan or political, but if you look at what built the American middle class, it really had a lot to do with the rise of the American labor movement. So all the efforts you are seeing in Republican-dominated states to erode (and) undercut unions, I think makes it harder for us to raise middle-class wages, to raise the opportunity for people to go further, to really rebuild the middle class.” A full video from the event is below.

Clinton traveled to Michigan where she was the keynote speaker at the Detroit NAACP Annual Fight For Freedom Fund Dinner. During her speech, she spoke about a number of platform topics including criminal justice reform, prison reform, gun control, and the refinancing of student loan debt. Clinton said that she wanted to continue to the progress of the last eight years. Speaking about President Barack Obama, Clinton said “We cannot let Barack Obama’s legacy fall into Donald Trump’s hands.” A full video of her speech is below.

Hillary Clinton Appears on The View, Politico Podcast

On Tuesday morning, Hillary Clinton appeared on ABC’s daytime talk show The View. She was interviewed by the hows hosts: Whoopi Goldberg, Joy Behar, Candace Bure, and Paula Faris. During the interview, Clinton was asked about a number of non-political topics including her favorite television shows. Of course she was asked about her campaign as well, and Bure asked Clinton thought a woman could be a feminist, but pro-life. Clinton said, “Absolutely. Look, I’ve been, and I’m sure that Whoopi and Joy have been, we’ve been in these conversations now for, what, 40-plus years, right? And I respect the opinions and beliefs of every woman. The reason why being pro-choice is the right way to go is because it is a choice and hopefully a choice that is rooted in the thoughtfulness and the care that women bring to this decision. So, of course you can be a feminist and be pro-life.” A full video of the interview is below.

Today, Politico posted the newest episode of its podcast “Off Message” which features an interview with Clinton. During the interview, host Glen Thrush and Clinton discussed a number of topics including her campaign, her platform points, and her thoughts on the state of the Republican party. At one point, Thrush asked Clinton about her Democratic rival Bernie Sanders and whether she thought he was a Democrat. She responded, “He’s a relatively new Democrat, and, in fact, I’m not even sure he is one. He’s running as one. So I don’t know quite how to characterize him.” The interview continued for well over forty minutes and is worth the time. You can listen to the full podcast below.

Hillary Clinton Sits Down with Rachel Maddow

On Wednesday, Hillary Clinton sat down with Rachel Maddow at the Apollo Theater for an interview which aired last night on MSNBC. During the interview, Clinton and Maddow spoke about a number of topics including Republican front-runner Donald Trump and his recent comments about abortion, her primary battle against Democratic candidate Bernie Sanders, and a number of her platform points and positions. One of the interesting distinctions that is becoming clear between Clinton and Sanders is that while Clinton is focused on the Democratic party and ensuring that other Democrats are elected, Sanders is only concerned about the primary and winning the nomination. Clinton understand the broader importance of the election and is fighting for Democratic successes in Congress as well.
